Opened up a local newspaper a few days ago to see an article on Yoga being taught in school. I think to myself, "Great idea. Relaxation before tests would help so many." I then go on to read, then parents and community members are against it. Why you might ask?
A few vocal parents raised concerns about the separation of church and state at a meeting the previous week, saying that the district could not expose their children to Hindu rituals.
You have got to be kidding me. I understand the correlation, but to think that by breathing in and out while standing still teaches me Hindu beliefs you are off your rocker. It is absurd.
"Yoga, even in its most basic form, is tied into Hinduism," said the Rev. Colin J. Lucid, of Calvary Baptist Church in Massena. The Rev. Mr. Lucid was one of the dissenting parents at last week's meeting. "My concern is separation of church and state. I am not against Hinduism."
Reaching there I think. Honestly, Yoga is a great tool to relax, and it appears to be used as such in this case. I wonder what the dissenters might say if the students all had a Wii Fit.
