Old School RPGs

So, one of the many holes in my gaming history has been my inability to complete classic RPG titles. From the Final Fantasy games to Chrono Trigger, I can not name an RPG title I have completed. I’ve decided to attempt at remedying the situation recently and have chosen the current goal of Chrono Trigger to complete before moving onto the Final Fantasy games. Of course, that still didn’t stop me from picking up the download version of FFVII from PSN over the weekend.

I assume DS is the best version available. I've only played some of it on PS1, but have thought about picking up the DS version (I probably will if/when I can find it for $20).

Every PS1 port of the old school RPGs has left me missing the short/non-existent load times of the cartridges.

Chrono Trigger is the perfect choice as far as older JRPGs go. It's aged the best of any of the 16 bit RPGs and still looks gorgeous. Plus you can whip through the game in a nice 15-20 hours and feel fully satisfied with the story experience. Then, if you can't get enough, there are plenty of other endings to unlock. One of the very best JRPGs.
Unfortunately the load times of the PS1 made it mostly unplayable for me .Please post your thoughts later Goronmon. |

If you can get past the jaggy first generation 3D graphics, FFVII is a fun game. I still hold the materia system at the top of any magic system they've made to date. The story is a bit over the top, but the game is a lot of fun. The Emerald and Ruby Weapons make for a few challenging end game fights as well. The only real downer is sitting through the Knights of the Round summoning sequence repeatedly...ugh.

The point of the exercise is to start clearing out my backlog f unbeaten games, not add new ones.

But if you beat everything, then you wouldn't have a backlog. Then you'd look mighty foolish.
