Things go on in my head. I have conversations with myself and I often answer my own questions best when they're written down. Here they are, my personal Q&A sessions.

The Vacuum

Sometimes I wonder if what I say is heard. I have conversations, I talk to people, but does anyone really listen?

I can attribute some of this to my job. I ask various people similar sets of questions, and some seem to not 'get it' even if I change the structure of said inquiry over and over. They want to hear something else. They try their damnedest to catch me in a lie or to turn the conversation around to their PoV. Sorry, I'm the expert here sir, you need to listen to me.

I get the same problem with my family By and large, they're a loud, political bunch. We generally agree on most things, but if someone comes in and tries to shift their little world, they freak. The weirdest thing is that they're not fundamentalist in any other way (they're quite liberal, in fact). Talking to them about a more moderate view is like trying to talk a hungry lion out of eating you. I'm sorry, the world is not black and white, but I do have a nice grey suit over here with a blue tie you might like.

Mostly, I think I get frustrated with the world in general. I feel like I'm out there yelling on a street corner and no one cares. They've seen it before. They have no interest. No one cares about the crazy guy screaming about the end of times. In this case I feel like I'm the fairly reasonable guy asking how people are doing, wondering how things could be better and no one wants to say anything. Or they just shrug and keep on without much other input. I see that you have something you'd like to share, but I really don't care to listen you.

So here I am. Talking to a vacuum. The space kind, not the "that dog hair isn't going anywhere, get to it" kind. Maybe I need to talk louder. Do I demand input or just suck it up and belie repose? I know the important people listen. That's what matters to me, because I like listening to them. Sometimes I just feel like a little brother whose older siblings are just too cool for him. Good thing I have my friends.

::yells into the vacuum:: I'm here listening. That's tough, especially because it doesn't seem to be something over which you have any control.

I bet a lot of it has to do with your job, honestly, as I end up feeling the same way after my workday and at least I can be passive aggressive with the idiots because I'm seeing them face to face.

But don't stop talking. You said yourself- the important people are listening. The rest don't matter.

I'm listening too. I'm good at it, it's what I do. I'll pipe up when I have something of import to say.

I get the feeling that a lot of people don't listen to a word I say, especially my family.
