.Real Gamers in Japan - Part 24 - Wife Stole DS?

This series aims to provide a tiny bit of insight into the mind and habits of Japanese gamers. Although I'm sure most will be pretty dry, I hope to occasionally surprise some of you.
In part 24 I'm talking with Rui, a man in his early thirties, married with one kid.
Me: Oh, so you have a kid?
Rui: A baby, only 6 months old.
Me: Sounds tough. So do you still game?
Rui: Well, a lot less than before unfortunately.
Me: What do you have?
Rui: I have a PS2.
Me: Oh yeah? What have you been playing?
Rui: Currently I'm going through Dragon Quest 8.
Me: Cool. Are you into Final Fantasy?
Rui: Not so much. I haven't played one since 6.
Me: Oh, OK. So you don't have a DS?
Rui: Well I did. But I wasn't really interested in it and then my wife stole it.
Me: Stole it?
Rui: Well she plays Animal Crossing on it every day. And whenever we go back to her home town she plays the game with our nieces.
Me: You know, you'll need the DS back to play Dragon Quest 9 right?
My Thoughts
I wonder if Rui has any chance of getting his wife to stop playing Animal Crossing? I hope so, because Dragon Quest IX is due out on Jul 11. Again, it seems, the DS has managed to cross traditional gamer boundaries once again.
Later, I also suggested Rui should check out Persona 4 as something pretty different to Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy. Haven't seen him since but maybe the recommendation will take.
Note: Although written in an interview style, the above is actually an extract of a conversation I had, either translated from Japanese, or modified from the original English to read more naturally. Names are changed to protect the identity of those concerned.

It's all a matter of free time and energy. Apart from this one I have two more in the pipe. Beyond that, I need to go and talk to some more folks!

I've heard of this phenomenon a few times...and it's not restricted to Japan. A good friend of mine gave up on his DS for a bit to play his PSP and his wife swooped in and snatched it up. It's basically hers now and he's come to grips with the fact that if he wants to play the DS he'll need to buy a new one for himself.

Yeah, it's pretty funny. Some guys might try to get their partner into video games and fail, but with the DS, their partner becomes a convert without them doing anything more than setting the DS aside.

I would secretly be proud and happy if I had a significant other that got into games, even if only on DS.
