Tsumego Set #3

Posted 05-11-2009 at 03:35 PM by shunoshi
Here we go with a few more tsumego. As before, they're seperated into Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced categories. All problems are for black to play.

The images contain downloadable SGF files that you can use to try and solve the problems. If you don't have an SGF Viewer and want one, check out MultiGo or CGoban, both are good (and CGoban can be used to play on KGS).

If you think you know the answer, you can post the play sequence here (just make sure you use spoiler tags so it doesn't ruin others' chances to solve them).

Elementary

Intermediate

Advanced

Good luck!!!

Ohhh, another set...time to try my luck.
Elementary: C8 to clear the white and make a double hole block

Intermediate: not so sure about this one...A7? Blocks in white on that side and you aleays have J10 if white trys to break out on that side.

Advanced...no clue, a guess would be going for F7 or G7, but I'm not sure why yet. The only thing I can say for sure is not anything in the A row.

That's a good attempt, but it looks like you fell into a little trap here.

Elementary: C8 may look like a good move, but it actually fills one of the two eyes you need. bC8, wE7, bD8. Now you only have a single eye and the group is dead. Instead, you should play E7. Then regardless of what white plays, either B8 or C8, you can play the other creating your second eye and keeping the group alive.

Intermediate: This is a very tricky one and I didn't expect you to get it. The key move is B10. bB10, wE10, bC10, wH10(captures 2 stones), bG10, wF10(captures 1 stone), bJ10, wG10...white is dead. This is a classic "throw-in" maneuver and can difficult to see unless you've played for quite some time. Play out the moves I listed above in a .sgf editor and you'll see how it works out.

I'd explain out the Advanced problem, but it would probably be very confusing to a Go novice as it even goes beyond my skill level.
