Tsumego Set #2

Posted 04-21-2009 at 10:04 AM by shunoshi
Here's my second set of Tsumego (Life & Death) problems. They're seperated into Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced categories. All problems are for black to play.

The images contain downloadable SGF files that you can use to try and solve the problems. If you don't have an SGF Viewer and want one, check out MultiGo or CGoban, both are good (and CGoban can be used to play on KGS).

If you think you know the answer, you can post the play sequence here (just make sure you use spoiler tags so it doesn't ruin others' chances to solve them).

Elementary Problem

Intermediate Problem

Advanced Problem

Good luck all!

Wow, I really am bad at this stuff. No clue on Intermediate or Advanaced, but I think I can take a crack at easy.

G7 to start? ugh, I am bad at this stuff.

Not quite.

***It's kinda crappy that spoiler text shows up in the recent posts for the blogs, so I'm writing this to make up for that....***

The answer to that one is B8. If white then plays D8, you can capture those 3 stones by playing F8. So, in this case: bB8, wF8, bD8. This captures white's lone stone at C8 and keeps your group unconditionally alive.

Hope that all makes sense.

This is what the final position would end up like.

Ahhh, that makes sense. And that spoiler stuff is a bother, which is why I had my intro throwaway sentence.

Anyway, it seems to be coming back to me, so moving on to intermediate:

H9?

That's a good attempt, but it's a little trickier than that.

C9. If you play H9, white plays F9. No matter what black plays after that, white can make 2 eyes. Black plays C9, white plays D9 or vice versa.

If you play C9 first, white responds with D9. Then you play what's called a "throw-in" at F9. This is a piece that commits suicide for the greater good. After black plays F9, white needs to capture the piece with a play at E9. Then black plays H9, sealing the deal, killing white's group.
