.Real Gamers in Japan Special - An XBot is Born?!
Posted 04-12-2009 at 02:07 AM by Chris_D
This series aims to provide a tiny bit of insight into the mind and habits of Japanese gamers. Although I'm sure most will be pretty dry, I hope to occasionally surprise some of you.
In this special, I'm talking with a friend of mine, Masahiro. He's in his mid-twenties and has a job doing phone customer service.
Me: What's new?
Masahiro: I just broke up with my girlfriend.
Me: Ah shit, what happened?
Masahiro: We had seven dates. But, finally I realised she was just using me for my money.
Me: Yeah?
Masahiro: She would sometimes pretend to take out her purse but she never offered to pay for anything.
Me: Ah, did you at least get some return on your investment?
Masahiro: Just some hand holding.
Me: Shit mate, you did the right thing.
Masahiro: I was even selling games to pay for the dates.
Me: Seriously? What games did you sell?
Masahiro: Wii Ski. Uses the balance board.
Me: OK...
Masahiro: Wii Music..
Me: Ah, Wii Music sux anyway.
Masahiro: Also Endless Ocean. That thing wasn't even a real game anyway. Also, some others, I forget.
Me: Oh well.
Masahiro: I'm thinking of getting rid of my Wii anyway.
Me: Really?
Masahiro: I'm dying to play Street Fighter 4 and Biohazard 5 so I'll probably get a 360.
Me: Yeah, well I'm sure you'd be much happier with a 360 or even a PS3. So you're not considering a PS3?
Masahiro: Well, the 360 is a bit cheaper.
Me: Cool, well, anytime you want to borrow games let me know.
Masahiro: Yeah, I will!
Me: So, funny that you're considering a 360. I get the feeling that most Japanese gamers aren't interested in the 360.
Masahiro: Hard to say... well for me it's just about playing the games I want to play. It's a shame, I've always liked Nintendo in the past.
My Thoughts
I feel sorry about my mate Masahiro getting his wallet pillaged by yet another chick. But really, his problem is that he always goes for girls a lot younger than him so they tend to be not so interested in a serious relationship.
It didn't come out in the above conversation but I'm sure one of the reasons Masahiro decided on a 360 over a PS3 is because he's had a chance to play a bunch of the games at my place. Especially the XBLA stuff has captured his interest. He hadn't played a twin stick shooter before but was playing Geometry Wars like a demon on only his second go. Also, Castle Crashers was an absolute winner, we spent more than 4 hours on that, playing multiplayer with another friend.
Xbox 360 - Not Dead in Japan. Yet...
Note: Although written in an interview style, the above is actually an extract of a conversation I had, either translated from Japanese, or modified from the original English to read more naturally. Names are changed to protect the identity of those concerned.
BTW, "An XBot" is a term used to refer to fans of the XBox, usually used in a derogative way. If you search for XBot in Google you can find funny quotes like this:

While the status of being a ‘Halo Killer’ certainly isn’t an impressive accomplishment, we’re here to tell you that KILLZONE 2 not only destroys the HALO series in every single regard, but it will also make xbots question the very foundation of their pathetic existence.

Wow... Sony Defense Force is just retarded.
Sucks Masahiro didn't even get to feel a bobbie. I don't think I'd sale a game for a chick. She'd just have to wait til payday to go on dates that cost. Otherwise we'd go to the park with the Frisbee. ![]() |

Man, I never really believed the stereotype of the Japanese golddigger until I went out on a date with a few ladies. Unbelievable. Masahiro has my sympathies. I was always too much of a nerd to sell my games for anything, let alone pay for dinner for someone who doesn't put out.

I wish I had some Japanese ladies to test your theory on KamaItachi.

If you ever get a chance, just remember that magic phrase 'それを買ってあげない’ ("I'm not buying that for you").

Xerxes, if you have Firefox, try the Firefox plugin rikaichan. It's pretty convenient for reading Japanese as you browse.
Also, you could try 「若し買ったら、エッチしようね!」(moshi kattara, ecchi shiyou ne!) If I buy that, let's have sex, OK? Hopefully, it might get an affirmative response, or at least a laugh .For Masahiro, I want to hook him up with this 25 y.o girl (who loves Dynasty Warriors) but I think he's gonna say she's too old. |

Cheers for the link there Chris. I've been horribly surprised at how bad my level of reading has become. This'll be a bit of a boon.
You could always tell Masahiro about the number of Japanese ladies you can meet/play over Live, which for me, has been surprisingly high. There was one young lady who loved shooters and was a hardcore Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress player. |

I need to go to Japan... So I can fulfill my dream of hooking up with Utada.
Convince Masahiro that her age is a good indicator she won't be after his money. |

Haha, I can't imagine a Japanese lady into TF2 but would like to meet one. Maybe one day. Btw, I even sometimes use that plugin for emails (I save them to a HTML file first). Seems a round about way to do things but rikaichan is just so convenient with the way you just need to hover over something to find out what it is.

Hopefully you can convince him. If he is in his mid 20s, 25 should not be too old for him. Good luck.

We tried to get her along to a group event but lucked out because she happened to be in Egypt at the time. On a related note, my Japanese teacher found out that my friend Masahiro is a pretty skilled magician so she wanted me to introduce her daughter to Masahiro. Her daughter is an amateur magician looking to learn some tricks before she goes on a homestay later this year. Anyway, even though the daughter is a bit over 30, she is super cute, so I noticed Masahiro's interest was peaked. Even though she has a boyfriend she was talking about if she should "keep him" or not. A fairly typical gal type, dyed hair, a bit too much makeup, very fashion conscious.
Anyway, I'm not sure that relationship is going anywhere but I heard they're having a one on one magic lesson in June so who knows.. |
