Collector's Edition Blues

Ah the collector’s edition – the opportunity to spend anyway between $10 to nearly double the price of the standard game for treats, chotchkies, developer interviews, and miscellaneous in game items.

My desk at work is cluttered with a collection of figures, posters, and…thingees…that have come to me via the joy of the collector’s edition. My vault-tec bobble head stands next to my Chimera trooper and in front of my Big Daddy.
My Big Daddy that came to me with a broken drill.
No worries. A little glue and he’s good as new. You’d hardly notice. Not like my Halo 3 limited edition disc…
That was scratched beyond repair…
But the kind manager at the Gamestop game me a replacement. So I was okay…
‘Til I tried to download my collector’s edition gear for Fable 2…after I gave up on seeing my Hobbe next to my fixed Big Daddy…
But they finally produced a code…that allowed everyone to download the Master Chief armor (granted, which looks pretty cool) and the plasma sword (which is almost as effective as a sharpened toothpick…so I don’t use anymore)…
So I was content…
Until I tried to download my Gold-Plated Lancer Rifle.

Pretty, isn’t it? Pointless, yeah, I know. But I wants it. It’s my precious.
So I input my code. No problem, the code works fine. My Xbox pondered the code for a few seconds, then told me I couldn’t download it. My code was fine, just no download. I waited a few minutes and tried again. No luck. A quick google search found a depressingly large number of threads telling the same tale of woe. No lancer. No how. The official word from Microsoft and Epic is to go to download history and try again. And again. And again. Ad nauseum.
Several days later. No pretty gun.
Now it really shouldn’t matter much to me. But it does. Why go through all the work of putting together these cool extras…but blow the execution? Why not a fix…it’s January…this problem has been going on since November. But this also seems to be a big problem for Microsoft. From Halo to Fable to Gears…top line internal IP smacking fans around with stupid, stupid problems. C’mon guys…get your stuff together and take to the time to do this right.
So there you have it…I’ve got the collector’s edition blues.
But wow…have you seen the collector’s edition for Street Fighter?

Kinda makes one think that if content is promised for a collector's edition, it had better be in the box, on the disc, or not promised in the first place.

Developer interviews/commentary should be standard on all games. In addition, CEs that include digital downloads are rubbish. Publishers should put that shit in the retail CE, or not include it at all.

My big issue with CEs is how hard it is to get hold of the WoW ones. Mrs Jonno is a hardcore pet collector and we've not been able to get a single CE for WoW or either expansion pack.

BigJonno: I see nothing BUT WoW CEs whenever they are released. My local Fry's Electronics probably has about 50 right now.
If you want, I could pick one up for you and send it to you. I did the same for LonLon, and he's in Australia. |

UPDATE: So yesterday I went out on Xbox.com, bought myself the Fallout 3 expansion, and - on a whim - added the gold-plated lancer assault rifle to my queue.
Lo and behold, when I got home and fired up my Xbox, it dutifully downloaded the Fallout 3 pack...and then downloaded my golden gun! I chainsawed Wretches with much joy last night! Still have absolutely no idea why that was so hard, or what I did differently (if anything) that made it work... UPDATE TO THE UPDATE: Well, damn. Looks like Microsoft gave the gun away to everyone. Now they say they'll take it back. Grumble. |
