The Last Defense
Everyone has heard of me.
I am
the President’s lifeline
if things go wrong.
I hear all their talk
about bombs:
death and destruction.
End of the world.
If needed, I halt Armageddon.
Give warning
to deploy missiles
and save the day.
I have no busy signal:
always connecting
two distant worlds
with my red receiver.
There were no calls today.
Sleep well;
for another day
the world is safe.
Everyone has heard of me.
I am
the President’s lifeline
if things go wrong.
I hear all their talk
about bombs:
death and destruction.
End of the world.
If needed, I halt Armageddon.
Give warning
to deploy missiles
and save the day.
I have no busy signal:
always connecting
two distant worlds
with my red receiver.
There were no calls today.
Sleep well;
for another day
the world is safe.

Is this in reference to the white house single phone that connects to Russia's president in case of incoming nuclear attacks?
I like the poem, quite simple yet cant pin it. Feels like a light chatting with a ting of merriment, as if telling me of something that is long time gone and no longer happening. |
