.Something About Japan - Loose Socks
Some of you might have heard of this before: the fashion of school girls wearing surprisingly bulky loose white socks with their school uniforms (often with a super short skirt!). Well you might not be aware, that to keep the socks in their fashionably correct place, a special adhesive called sock glue* is needed.
Anyway, I had heard of this sock glue before but today, for the first time, I got to witness the application process in person! On the train, a young school girl, as casual as you please, rolled down the top edge of her socks and pulled out a tube that could have been a normal glue stick. She then ran the stick around her leg the full 360 degrees, and proceeded to pull her socks back up.
Another one of those weird Japanese things that turns out to be 100% true!

That's really weird. It's even weirder because the girl in your story applied her sock glue so casually. Why are you in Japan anyway? What do you do there? Are you a robot?
Also, you should blog more. ![]() I don't know if I'm allowed to say that, because I haven't blogged in weeks, but you really should. ![]() |

Yeah I was pretty surprised to see it. Like blowing your nose, I would have thought it was the kind of thing done behind closed doors.
I quit my software job after 6 years and moved here in 2006 to teach English. Can't see myself going back at the moment! Thanks for the feedback. Hoping to start a blog series, something like real gamers in Japan. |

I'm trying to learn Japanese. Sort of. It's on hold now. But that's awesome.

Did you grab that DS Japanese learning software? Can't remember exactly what it's called. I wonder if it's any good?

My Japanese Coach. No, but I plan on it. Last semester I took Japanese Begenners one at the college. I was doing good until they canceled the second part in the next semester. Since I've gotten a little sidetracked. I also have a bunch of other tools. But I'm trying to make time so we shall see.

Man that completely sucks about your course getting canceled. I started learning Japanese at an adults education course about 8 years ago for 12 months, but didn't get back into it until sometime after I moved here. It's tough keeping up with studies with my workload but I'm trying to stay committed.
Btw, for some casual podcast listening I recommend www.japanesepod101.com. The podcast lessons are free although the extra materials do require a subscription. Try either the Beginner or Newbie levels. I usually listen to them on the train between all the video game podcasts I listen to. |
