Scene It? Box Office Smash

Posted 10-30-2008 at 08:47 PM by astranoir
I really enjoyed Scene It? Lights Camera Action (360), so when Box Office Smash came out, I decided to pick it up. My roommate, boyfriend and I played it tonight, and it was incredibly fun! They did much more than merely update the puzzles/questions from the original, they added new types of puzzles, gave you more control over gameplay options (like whether to make puzzles buzz-in or not, or whether to use point deduction rules), and added LIVE capabilities. While the visual interface is just as cheesey as, if not more so than, the original, everything has been improved. Playing over LIVE is incredibly fun easy, though the new Single Player mode is just depressing. I think anyone who enjoyed the original will want to pick it up - it is only $40 for the disc alone, and people who enjoy trivia and have friends over LIVE with whom they would like to play might want to consider picking it up as well. The announcers in this iteration of Scene It? are just as obnoxious, if not more so, than the previous announcers, but that's all part of the fun experience too, right?
One thing I found to be annoying, while also amusing, was the use of avatars. In the previous Scene It? for 360, you are not really represented inside the game, other than by your gamer pic and controller color. In this version you are represented by an avatar sitting on a couch. Presumably when the NXE comes out, you will be represented by your own avatar, but as it is currently, you have your choice from about 5 premade avatars from a generic white male avatar to a Goth chick avatar. What bothers me about them is that they act just as douchebaggy as the announcers, with no prompting from you! So when I was winning a few rounds playing on LIVE, my avatar was strutting and laughing at the other avatars, while I am not one to trash talk people or anything like that. I suppose I could have chatted via voice chat to make myself look like less of a tool, as voice is supported, but I rarely hook up my headset, and people didn't seem to be talking much even when they were showing up as having headsets, so this doesn't look like it will end up being a centerpiece for bizarre conversations like UNO can be.
Anyway, I am enjoying this as much as, if not more than the original one for the 360. As I hoped with the original (though they failed to provide), I hope they will provide downoadable content packs to increase he question library, or even let me put in some sort of code to prove I own the original to consolidate the libraries.

So you can play online? Might pick this up, do you have to use one of their controllers or is the standard one ok?

Yeah, playing online is fun. You have to use one of their controllers because they have a special buzzer on them. I think the full game with controllers is $60, though. Also, the controllers are infrared with a usb receiver, so the input may be altogether different in addition to the buzzer - it identifies you by color associated with your controller so I would definitely say a regular controller is not usable, unfortunately.

Yeah, I saw you playing this when I loaded up Fallout 3 earlier. You really meant it that you have no Live friends if you added someone that doesn't even have a 360.

Though, now I actually have a gamerscore. 30 points for 3 achievements!

I'm tempted to get this. I'm obsessed with movies, and I like to think I'd kick the ass of any casual movie-watcher at it. (But then again, I suppose the people who'd buy it aren't the average movie-goers.)

Aside from the whole douchebaggy avatar thing, it sounds pretty fun.

Rini, you should get it! Then we can have epic online battles of wit and trivia! (Okay, probably not wit unless we're wearing our headsets, which you could probably convince me to do, but trivia for sure!)

You can play with just random people - it doesn't have to be friends unless you make an invite-only game. It's a ton of fun playing with people you don't know also.
