Far Cry 2 Impressions

Visuals are awesome. Runs very well on my system that isn't too up to date. Video card is a 8800GTS 640MB version and most settings run at Very High at 1680x1050. Only thing I can't turn on is AA, but I think I'll survive. Looks pretty amazing to be driving a boat down the river near sunset and look up to see the rays of light from the sun shift as it moves through the trees.

Oh yeah, if you have a Nvidia video card, definitely try out the 180.42 beta drivers. They seem to work pretty well. However, I did have trouble booting up the game after I first installed. All I did was go to Documents/My Games/Far Cry 2/GamerProfile.xml and change Maximize from Maximize=0 to 1.That seemed to take care of it and haven't seen the issue pop up since.

Gunplay works well, though on Hardcore it seems that the enemies take a wee bit more damage than you'd expect before they are going down. Shoot a guy in the chest with a burst from your rifle with blood spurting everywhere, upon which they stagger briefly before getting right back to shooting your ass off. Then again, I'm sure the NPCs have worse complaints about me. "Fucking bastard takes a dozen hits, bleeds all over the place then stabs himself with a little needle and he's at full health!".

I do like the open gameplay quite a bit. You can either drive around, or when I noticed a mission was to take out a dock refueling station, I decided to take the boat out for a spin. The entire world seems extremely well detailed and you really feel like you are part of the environment as you are travelling.

I have already died a few times. The first time a buddy saved me, which was pretty cool to watch as they dragged be out of harms way. Unfortunately, they seem to only do that occasionally as I died later and was forced to go back to a previous save. Another thing? No auto-save. Not really a complaint, per se, but I have this bad habit of assuming there is auto-save. So I end up losing a chunk of gametime early on before I learn that manually saving is important.

Initially the "respawning" of guard posts seems a little quick, but I can't say for sure that I am just incorrectly remembering which posts I have already cleared out.

After your buddy rescues you, you need to head to a safe house and possibly rest. He/she will show up, and if you talk to them, they'll reset their rescue ability.

Under Vista64, DX10, 8800GTS 512, I'm able to run 4xAA with almost no performance hit at all. I'm using 178.13 drivers.

Is that how it resets? I wasn't sure as I got it off Steam and have no manual or anything.

If you private message me your email, I'll send you a copy of the PDF manual. That said, I figured out the reset-rescue buddy through pure chance
