It's hard to go back with Game 22: Fallout

Fallout is one of those games that I somehow missed when it originally came out. I didn't purposefully avoid it, but at the point it was released, I really didn't have "my finger on the pulse of gaming" like I do now, so I just didn't know anything about it. Well, one of my friends told me some stuff, and it always sounded fun. Don't know why I didn't pick it up back then.
Two Christmases ago, I was given Fallout 3 as a present. I loved this game and played tons of hours on it, and I haven't come close to doing all the quests, and have multiple characters at different stages. So, when I saw that Fallout 1 & 2 were on sale for some pittance, I knew their time had come.
Or so I thought. After finally getting around to Fallout, I am having a hard time not judging it by its sequel. The gameplay is fine, but it is missing all of the improvements of the latest game. The graphics are much better than I thought they would be, but it is still showing its age.
I took the default character, Max Stone, and slaughtered a bunch of rats, started traveling to Vault 15 and stopped at the town. I did the scorpion sidequest (Max was actually pretty good at beating those things with his fists!) And then explored what I could of Vault 15. I found that I needed rope, returned to town, asked around a little and then it was time to call it for the night.
It is always weird judging old games today. I know this game has all kind of potential fun, but I think I might have missed the point where I could have had the most fun with it.
I'd return to it, but probably not before playing a bunch more of Fallout 3.
Any tips or thoughts about Fallout?

Stick with it, the Fallout games were larger in scope than FO3 probably was (with far more humour as well). There's more depth in general, once you get past that first little village, the whole world opens up (well, technically, you can immediately ... *spoilers*).
