I have an odd bruise on my right elbow. The sad thing is, I remember not having it Saturday night before drinking, and I remember it being there after the bar closed. I don't know how it got there.

Friday night, we got back to my friend's apartment and I managed to hobble to the kitchen sink and threw up, twice. Then I passed out on her living room floor with shit on my shoes.

Speaking of good times and hangovers, I spend a solid monday through friday getting smashed in Vegas last week.

My first night was spent on an inflatable pool toy with a dirty pool towel draped over me to trick my drunk brain into think I had blankets. The second night was spent in the pillow lined bathtub of our room in Caesar's Palace. Cool idea in theory, but incredibly uncomfortable in practice. Also, accidentally kicking the faucet on is less funny than it sounds. I couldn't sleep, so I read Vonnegut's Slapstick in it's entirety while my hangover slowly took over.

Thankfully, the next two nights were spent in a real bed. My buddy drew the short straw, so he got to enjoy the pillow bed we'd made out of the ~50 free pillows we ordered over the course of the week. This was a great victory, so I decided to celebrate it by pounding down an assortment of Mind Erasers and Car Bombs over the course of the evening with a nice expensive cigar to wash it all down.

All and all, I spent about 200 dollars for a week long stay and the majority of it was lost at the Roulette table. Not bad for my first time in Vegas.

Guys, I got drunk. On Mexican swill.

I've been playing Batman: Arkham Asylum and I think it may be the greatest, most well crafted game of all time. So good. Also: Batman. How cool is that guy?

A: Pretty cool.

It's dark in here and now I'm watching Sons of Anarchy in one window and playing Dragon Warrior 3 on an NES emulator in another. I always feel vaguely ashamed when I play old video games that I've beaten a dozen times before. I could be doing something new. I could at least be playing the DeJap translation of the SNES remake, but nooooooo I wanted full-on, slow paced NES glory.

Man, those pixels are just so good. So good. Look at all the pixels.

Everyone is asleep except for a bunch of you in a bunch of threads I could care fuck-all about.

Did I ever tell you how wrong you are? Well I should have.

I love you man.

I think that about sums it up.

This is my favorite hangover song.

RLiuPRMJy8

I heard a hippy singing it outside the Borders where I worked once, and asked him to sing it for me every day for a week afterwards. It was one of the experiences that showed me how much I wanted to be able to do that kind of thing. If you can sing at all, and play the guitar at the same time, you will never be broke. You can travel to a big city anywhere in the US and make enough money to eat and sleep off of. That, to me, is incredible freedom.

Woo! I've got three pints of Strongbow in me, and the first good buzz I've managed in literal years.

Now I'm listening to Bill Bailey and Tim Minchin songs. For some reason Brit/Aussie comedy appeals to me when in the depths of a cider binge.

Tonight will be the fourth in a marathon of drinking. But it's for good reason: to get the number of the girl who agreed to see a movie with me!

Also, because I think I levelled up my boozemancer skills. I should feel WAY more hungover than I do right now. I'm drinking like a 20 year-old again!

Mine should be really high then. I spent a week in Vegas and am going out tonight again (at home). I didn't really get actually drunk many times in Vegas though. Lots of drinking just spaced out throughout the day.

I didn't drink nearly as much there as I thought I was going to.

First of all, it's dandelion SODA, not "soup" like you posted on my wall. :p

It's soda made with dandelions. My friend brewed it. He was trying to make a dandelion beer, but something went wrong and it didn't ferment. It's extremely carbonated though, so we had to open it over the sink and watch as half of the bottle geysered out, haha. It's really tasty. It tastes like a more herbal 7-UP.

3 pints of cider drunk over a 1 and a half hour period has my head spinning. The fact that it's now 8:22pm and I am yet to eat anything today probably doesn't help.

I got absolutely smashed last night. I would have posted for your amusement, but I was at a party in the middle of a field. Instead of the usual "get drunk round the fire talking bollocks" that we usually engage in, it all went a bit crazy with lots of music, dancing and about half a dozen of us standing around in our underwear engaging in boy vs girl dare-type shenanigans. There was much boobage (and not just my hairy moobs,) making out and vodka jelly.

It's easy enough to find here in Los Angeles. Though last year's Winter Ale was sorta skunky. The six pack I got, as well as the keg at my local bar were horrible tasting.

But there's so many other good breweries out here too, so I tend to pick up stuff from Stone and Pike.

That sucks that it gets skunky by the time it gets over to the west coast. It's not the same way vice versa. I've gotten many a brew from the west coast and it's still good by the time it gets here.

I used to do quick after work drinks all the time. I don't any more.

The reason for the change is that now whenever I drink even a pint or two of beer, I get the worst headaches imaginable. It's like getting a hangover headache without the actual getting drunk and going to sleep part.

One thing that always got me is if I drank, I was fine as long as I kept drinking, but if I stopped I would have to fight through some serious fatigue. So drink a after work usually meant a night of drinking or a 9pm bed time. Even a single drink could cause this unless I was physically active while or immediately after drinking.

Everyone has that certain liquor that they over induldged on as a youth, spent many hours at the toilet as a result and now their stomach churns at the thought of ever having a again. For many its tequila, for me, it's vodka. Me and vodka used to be good friends, then I had a really really really stupid night and now me and vodka are no longer on speaking terms.

I got a taste for whiskey ( Canadian, not that borbon shit you Americans drink ) and as an avid beer drinker, I can tell you a good whiskey is a great experience, especially once you start drinking them neat or at worst, on the rocks. You actually learn to enjoy it on a different level, even the burn.

That said, only with good rye or Irish whiskey, any thing else and mix it is!

For me that liquor I couldn't drink for a while was gin. But not because I got overly drunk. No, it was because on two separate occasions two girls broke my heart while they were sipping a gin drink. Psychologically for a long time afterward I couldn't touch the stuff without getting all emo and shit.

On a related note: girls who drink gin can go to hell.

When I came of drinking age ( so, like 14 in Canada ), lemon gin was the panty remover drink of choice.

People who didn't like booze but wanted to get drunk ( so at that age, pretty much everyone) drank Lemon Gin, Southern Comfort or Cherry Whiskey. Little did they realize, each of those is a prebottled hangover thanks to the high sugar content.

Whiskey is definitely my drink of choice. Rock Hill Farm specifically. Jack Daniels Single Barrel is pretty nice too.

Ug Jacks. Gentleman Jack is the only edible variant I have ever encountered. Otherwise its like drinking smoked corn that someone pissed on after eating a plate of asparagus

Once imported to Canada Jacks isn't cheap anymore. Its like Harley Davidson, people pay full price for an inferior product because of the image/brand. If it was cheap, that would be a different story, as our cheap whiskey border on being a crime against humanity.

Vodka is not whiskey. ;)

I drink whiskey every now and then, but I would rather drink a beer than just about anything else.

I was referring to the whisky liqueur you posted earlier!

I can't really decide between vodka and whisky. Neat/straight - definitely whisky but I like the versatility of the former.

Vodka is good purely because you can put it in a freezer and unless it's cheap crap it won't freeze up. You just get nice cold drinks without having to dilute them with ice.

The first time I ever drank tequila was in Vegas. That night was a lot of fun, as was the second time I drank tequila, in Chicago. The last two times (both in Minneapolis), were both terrible nights. I haven't touched it since.

I'm talking about straight tequila, by the way, not margaritas or anything like that.

Oh, the Drambuie? It's wonderful stuff, although it's much sweeter than most whiskey or scotch.

I got a drink with my ex in between not speaking and being in love once, and I asked what she was having. The glass was full, so when she said "gin" I thought she meant gin and tonic. No, she meant gin. A glass full of gin.

I had one too, because I wasn't gonna let her be more hardcore than me.

My above stupid-drunk-waking-up-in-the-shower-Armenian-cab-ride-home drunk was courtesy of several bourbon/lemonades with some craft lagers mixed in to my drinking for maximum pain

Drinking a bunch of beer and liquor in the same night is not a good idea, as you are no-doubt now aware.

I've known for a long time. But here's what happens:

1)I decide what I'm drinking. That night, it was bourbon.
2)I have a few.
3)I think, "Well, it's time to switch over to a nice mellow beer."
4)I have a few more.
5)"MAN I SURE MISS DRINKING BOURBON. CAN YOU MAKE ME ONE IN A PINT GLASS?"
6)I died.

Mine usually goes:

1) Decide what I'm drinking. Usually either bourbon or cider.
2) Run into some friends while out, or meet some new people.
3) Get drinks bought for me that are never what I was drinking before.
4) Drink them because it would be rude not to.
5) Pain. Blood. Tears. Hangover.

1) Have they got any decent ales on tap?
2) Any decent rum or whiskey?
3) Decent cocktail menu?
4) Rum and coke.
5) Change drinks at random.
6) Greasy kebab/pizza/chicken on the way home.
7) Wake up feeling awesome.

Yeah, usually I'm pretty okay and do the same (when I woke up I had an opened but untouched bottle of water sitting on my desk), but when I get reckless it is...pretty awful. I've really only had maybe 5 terrible hangovers in my life, and that was one of them

Bourbon served by the pint is the way I typically kick off an evening of drinking. Then, I'll follow it up with a few beers or ciders of choice. I don't think I have ever experienced a hangover; just a bit of cottonmouth the next morning.

My I guess typical night if I am going hard. If not hard then it is just beer usually.

1. Ceasers or two (sorta a version of a bloody Mary for you Americans, not sure if Briton or elsewhere they have Bloody Mary's). Sometimes this is skipped but they are never added later.
2. Beer
3. Whatever shots get bought by others and myself
4. Usually switch to gin and tonic or spiced rum and coke at some point
5. Back to beer
6. Go home sleep (I never get food) and wake up usually before 9, no matter what time I went to bed, feeling fine though I am usually tired some time in the afternoon.

I usually only get hangovers if I drink wine, so I don't very often. Mixing other stuff has never bothered me. I also have no booze that I have a gag reflex for. So I will drink anything.

David Embury's classic book published in 1948 provides a slight variation, also generally accepted among purists:
12 parts American whiskey
1 part simple syrup
1-3 dashes Angostura bitters
Twist of lemon peel over the top, and serve garnished with the lemon peel and a maraschino cherry.

My version would be Whiskey, Maple Syrup, Cherry Bitters, and Orange peel.

Rumplemintz is good for people who don't like the taste of liquor. I used to drink the shit up back when I was like 16. The peppermint flavor masks the taste of alcohol pretty well. It mixes quite well with Jager as a double shot.

I can't stand the shit now, though. Once you've acquired your own taste, it's pretty unnecessary. I used to know a guy who carried around a Scope bottle filled with Rumplemintz. He was an alcoholic, and this was his way of "hiding" his habit while at work and what not.

Look into funded programs. You might not have to pay if you can really impress someone. I keep one foot in the UC door so that this opportunity is always open to me. My best advice is to sit in on classes you like and make friends with your professors and then write some kick ass papers. They'll back you up on applications since they all know each other and you'll have a good chance at landing a funded program.

Hmm, that is fantastic advice. Thanks.

That....I'm not sure I would classify that as improving your palette.

Wine can be a very personal thing...A lot of wine snobs will turn their nose downs at blends, but I think they showcase the best wine has to offer.

I'd try a Grenache, Morvedre, Shiraz or a Grenach, Morvedre, Cabernet. There's a lot of good blends along those lines that have great fruit overtones without being overly dry. I don't have any particular traditional wine I prefer, and I find it's very much by the bottle. Spend more than $10, and less than $30, and you'll usually be doing good. There's a lot of crap in that range too, so the best thing you can do is find something you like and branch out from there.

As far as cheese...break off from the craft. Try the Dubliner or some Smoked or Aged Gruyere. Those are pretty solid cheeses that aren't overly pungent. I personally can't do the bleu cheese much myself. And you can pretty much never go wrong with a good Brie. Havarti's pretty tasty too.

Okay, a serious question for some of the regulars here: If one were something of a heavy drinker for a few months and then they were to abruptly stop, is it normal for things to feel... wobbly? I mean, I feel like I’ve just stepped on a boat for the first time, and I find myself constantly grabbing onto things, just to steady them (and, of course, not toss my cookies).

Either that or, I don't know, I've picked up the flu or something.

Things are wobbly when you drink, or wobbly when you don't? That's an important distinction.

If it's the former, then your ability to process alcohol has likely decreased in the months that you haven't been drinking. If it's the latter, then you might be going through withdrawals?

This be Raftman. From the Unibroue most of you know and love, this beer is much less popular than the rest of their line, which is a shame. To think I used to get it from my corner store when I lived in Montreal, and cant by the damned stuff anywhere now that I am in Ontario!

Its an Amber Ale from a peat smoked whiskey. It was amazingly good and my daily siper, although I hadn't had it in nearly a decade, I thought they stopped making it.

Finding it, and tasting it again, is a mixed emotion, as I am delighted to find this wonderful beer still exists, but sad at how hard it is to acquire! :(

That brewery is like a 10 minute walk from my Condo ( ironically though, I have to walk past Steam Whistle to get there. I am not a huge fan though, it's ok stuff, but nothing to right home about. Big Wheel is an ok summer beer, the Orange Weisse is a predictable but somewhat disappointing wheat beer ( whats with the putting citrus flavour in directly, thats just lazy ), and the rest of their lineup is downright forgettable.

All told though, Ontario microbrew is pretty hit or miss. There are some standout IPAs but I am so effing sick of IPAs that this is rather lost on me. Beaus is decent, as is Wellingtons, in the TO region, Port Credit is alright and most of Mill St is pretty fucking awful ( they make a good coffee porter if thats your thing, it's not mine ), but in the end, not a whole lot to write home about.

That said, compared to the rest of Canada, only Quebec is clearly superior ( they are easily the best beer makers in North America, let alone Canada ), with BC coming in about equal.
