View Full Version : PS3 not reading divx files that the 360 can?

I just got my PS3 and I'm trying to test out everything, so I took a USB stick that has 8 gigs of divx files on it out of my 360 that plays each one of them and then stick that same card into my PS3 then it tells me there are "no titles".
WTF. I thought they were the same when it came to divx playback. I would much rather use my PS3 for this then my 360 but the files aren't showing up. I'm updated to the very latest firmware...

Every now and then I come across an avi or divx file I can't play for some odd reason. This happened more frequently in the past so I'm not sure if a patch fixed it or I've been more picky about the people I download from. Axxo's files always work for me, but it's almost 50/50 with anything else I download.
Back on EvAv some time ago, someone mentioned converting the files with a separate program like PS3 Video 9 (http://www.redkawa.com/videoconverters/ps3video9/) (takes a lot of time, though) or tversity (http://weblog.bbzzdd.com/2007/08/04/optimizing-tversity-for-the-ps3-part-i/). The latter seems to be the most desired.

Select the USB drive in the movies menu and press triangle, then select display all.
It looks for movies in a particular place. Don't know where or why, but the above will let you just browse the drive normally.

Actually, someone on a different forum told me to highlight the USB stick and then press Triangle then tell it to show all files. That worked and now it's time for Heroes!!

Yup, that's what I was missing. And it automatically makes it full screen which is a whole extra step on the 360. Happy camper now.

A headsup:
If you want to update the firmware via USB drive you need to put the firmware file in \PS3\update in the root. It can't find it otherwise and you can't point it to it.
This is important, because downloading it on the PS3 can be a painful/non-happening experience at times.

I wish they allowed you update PS3 game updates through USB. I still can't update motorstorm.

I find that the PS3 seems to have trouble with older divx's. No trouble with new ones, but old ones for sure...usually, I try to stream to the PS3, then I try the USB option, then I go to the other room and use the 360.

This is a godsend for me. I watch World Rally coverage streamed from my computer, and my TV isn't very big. Having the PS3 automatically fill the screen with the files is great.

I'm using TVersity with the 360. It's great. It transcodes when it needs to. It essentially lets you play anything. I even loaded in some di.fm stations, so I can have streaming radio in the guide while playing Mega Man 9.

For reference, the file structure for the PS3 to recognize your files is
(root)/MUSIC for music
(root)/VIDEO for videos
(root)/PICTURE for pictures
and yes, it has to be all caps for some reason. I dunno why.
And depending on the version of the DivX/XviD codec used, the file might not play. wma and wmv files will play, but the wmv has to be encoded with a specific codec I'm forgetting right now.

Can't find it or refuses to stream one when you select it?
Did you enable windows media sharing?

Have you tried the video files from a usb stick?
Tried streaming a wmv file? Just avi files not playing?
Just trying to narrow down the issues...even though I know these sound like basic questions.

I'll add that to my USB sticks since the 360 will read them anywhere they appear. This way I can use it easily on both... but my PS3 is my main divx player now. Ironically, I need to use my 360 remote when I watch divx because the PS3 Bluetooth remote can't power off my TV or change the volume.
