No fair. I had my pass shipped to my parents because I wasn't positive I'd still be at the same apartment around this time. The (apparently) customary PAX pass photo will have to wait till I visit my parents.

So it turns out that the class I'm TAing for has it's first quiz that Friday. That means I'll be in Seattle Friday afternoon at the earliest, so you can take me off for Blue Skittle :(
I'll see if there is any way to transfer the ticket so someone else can get to go.

I see a small handful of names on the list that haven't ordered a shirt yet (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?p=339092). You have until Wednesday morning to get the order in.
PM me if you have any questions! The group picture at PAX will look much sexier if we all rock the same garb.

I'll help you grade. :) I'm kind of a harsh grader, tho'. My students used to raise a fuss because I'd insert arbitrary units of measurement if they left it off. (like Furlongs per Fortnight, or Drams per Curie)
... usually they'd back off when I explained how that kind of error could kill people. Dunno if it'd really sell in GE110 tho. :o ;)
You'll get less flack (or at least it's easier to defend) if you rotate people through by question # rather than each doing a handful on their own. Then you can justify that grading was consistent... otherwise you get the people who got me complaining that all the other guys got were hairy ball pics and A+'s. :p

Dibs on sidekicking the destruction of the open bar.
Yep, still can't go. I have a list of demands (think of it as a scavenger hunt):
1. Argue/fight with a homeless man. Extra points if you get them to ramble incoherently.
2. Drink all of Ghostbear's beer, whether or not it's his Ghostbeer.
3. Get blotto, blackout drunk at Shorty's and play pinball for at least an hour. Extra points for any shot you set on fire. Instant win if Adam Sessler shows up and you can make him uncomfortable as he uses the ATM.
4. Make Von's regret our presence again (but make the money worth it) and make sure hot Katie shows up for the 3rd anniversary. Extra points if she shows you her tattoo. Oh yes- that one.
5. Tell Gambit to shut the fuck up- extra points for a taint punch.

Um. So have I. You must've only gone during the day, as the evening mainstage concerts can easily justify a good portion of that. Memorial Stadium is like 30k capacity, and it's usually pretty much full for the headliner shows.

Should've asked how full my car was, sister. :p
It's possible, so long as you guys don't have much stuff. :o The donuts pretty much take up the entire trunk + part of the back seat (our order this year is now bigger than last year's ), plus my stuff (sleeping bag, laptop, RB instruments), and possibly a cooler if I have to keep any donuts in the car for an extended amount of time.
Plus there's logistics of my taking the kids to my folks' house in NE Vancouver on the way up. Ideally, if you guys could get up there (there's a big transit center at SR-14 and 164th) I can get you after I drop the kids + seats off. :o
Or you could tell your ride to quit balkin'. She can come to Von's too. :D

Unfortunately, getting a ride with anyone other than my current ride is pretty tough to swing. Basically, this trip to PAX is a birthday present from two of my friends (two friends who don't post here, and don't want to go to Von's), and the parent of one of them is giving us a ride up. The plan is to have a big car trip kind of thing. Ditching them would kind of be a dick move, especially since they're paying for pretty much my whole trip. So if they can't make it up to Seattle with me in time for Von's, then none of us can. :(
But I definitely hope to meet up with all of you even if Von's isn't an option.

Scene: Any Mexican Border Town.
Enter: Underage (i.e. <21) American college co-ed. Seated at a table with friends.
Enter: Bartender (male or female), clutching a bottle of tequila, and a bottle of 7up. Typically at the behest of one of the victim's friends. :D
Bartender starts blowing a whistle rhythmically as he/she approaches the table. Nearby patrons turn to witness the spectacle, cheering, hollering, etc.
Bartender approaches to stand behind the chosen (surprised) victim, much to the delight of the rest of the table. Bartender pulls out a small bar towel, and proceeds to tip the participant's head back in their chair.
Participant's head back, mouth coaxed wide open by the bartender. In pours the tequila and 7up side-by-side until the mouth is full.
Bartender closes participant's mouth, holding the bar towel over their mouth. To the rhythm of the music and whistle blowing, the bartender proceeds to shake the participant's head vigorously. :D
Participant attempts to down the fizzy concoction without spewing (chances of which can vary depending on how far along the night is). Audience applauds, party resumes.

HA! Funny story about Beck last year. One of the local radio stations was holding a contest. If you won, Beck would write a song about you. All you had to do was write a short story about why your life is interesting. Well my roommate won by blatantly lying. I'll see if I can get a copy of the CD with the song Beck wrote about him. It's something like 25 minutes long.

So I was considering making a thread about this, but I can probably just do it here:
This will be my first PAX (and for that matter, my first con), and I'm coming with a coworker who has also never done a con: how does a day at PAX usually break down? How much time do you find yourself seeing stuff on the floor vs sitting in on panels vs chilling out and playing games with people?
For that matter, how much time should I plan to spend waiting in line to see the Giant Bombcast or Wil Wheaton or Omegathon rounds, etc? I don't really have a sense of how many things it's realistic to plan to attend each day. I'm planning to have my iPhone and DS with me, at the least... should I try to keep things pocket-carryable, or should I just bring a satchel bag along?
I feel like a "so you're going to PAX" guide would be helpful for convention noobs. :p
(Obviously, everybody has different interests, so I'm just looking for any helpful "If I had known <x> the first year, I would've done <y> differently" type of information you guys might have)

Lines can get very long, depending on what's going on (Wil Wheaton and everything that has Gabe & Tycho in them can get quite long, as well as the morning lines).
The exhibition hall will probably be the first place to go, it's where the games are. After that, it really depends on you. Every day ends with either concerts or the Omegathon finals. As these tend to fill up really fast, there are alternate activities.
What you want to do is get there early, since the first x amount of people get concert wristbands. If you don't have one of those it really depends on how many people are in there. If there's room, you should be able to get in. That really depends on fire code stuff though, so it also depends on how many wristbands that they're giving away.

Raven: How your day breaks down is entirely up to you. Some people cruise the panels, others spend all day bouncing from demo to demo to demo.
The more popular stuff the lines can get kinda long. Helps to have a buddy so you can have someone to chat with or hold your place while you go to the loo.
I mostly just watched, not having to stand in lines to play helped free up more time so I could do extracurricular stuff (like last year I went to do stuff like take some friends to see Bruce Lee's gravesite, dinners out, etc). This year I'll be there longer so I'll probably end up in some lines to play stuff.
Most important? Comfortable shoes. And carry a snack in case you end up stuck in a line when you need a surge of blood sugar. Food in the convention center can be difficult to get in a timely fashion. Given the alternative is hoofing it a few blocks away, either way you're not always gonna be able to "just grab a bite" between panels.

I bring a backpack, keep a couple of granola bars in it. Other than that, see what you want to see :) there will be plenty of folks to hang out with.

Ravenlock:
For panels, plan on getting in line for them about one hour before their scheduled start time. For the Giant Bomb and Brodeo panels, I'll be checking the line 2 hours before each one starts. If the lines are small to non-existant, I'll go do stuff and come back an hour before the start and get in line at that point. Will Wheaton and Penny Arcade panels, I'd say start scoping out the lines 3 hours in advance.
Aside from the panels, you shouldn't have any serious amount of time in line for stuff. Maybe if you want to buy food, but if you want to play games in the expo hall, lines aren't that bad and depending on the game, could have multiple stations available.
Now the only other line I'm really concerned about is the Friday morning admission line. I want to get in and buy a SFIV stick, so I have to be up near the front of the line. I'm guessing maybe I want to get in line about 7AM? I'm not sure. I was going to ask around at Von's/BS and see what people have to say.
And wyeast was totally right to tell you to bring a backpack with some snacks. Food lines can get long and its nice to be able to produce a snack on demand. Also, backpacks are really nice for carrying whatever free shit you may have gathered during the day.
If you have any other questions, holler! See you there!

Raven: Don't get too bogged down in what you're planning to do. It will change. Instead, pick out two or three big things you really want to see, make sure you hit those, and play the rest by ear. Half the fun is getting to hang out with some really awesome people and see cool things with them.

You want to get into the big ass line on Friday as early as possible. The goodie bag, it is worth it. :p
I think there are going to be 4k wristbands handed out for concerts this year, I could be wrong though.
I'd have more than just a snack in my bag if I was you, the lines are insane to buy food and beverage.

I plan on bringing all my food for the day and putting it in a lunchbox. I'll probably bring my backpack just so the stuff is easier to carry. I tend to make all my own food anyway so it's nothing different.

I've got like 19 granola bars and 18 packets of crystal light and 5 packs of cigarettes all loaded up into the bag I'll be lugging around. I'm good to go. :)

Any food places remotely near the convention center will run out of food before you even think about getting something to eat. I think all 3 days Subway was out of meat before 11:00.
I would suggest figuring out what is a high priority for you and planning around it. For everything else, playing it by ear was the most fun. Also, if you are looking for a lot of free swag, do that first thing on Firday, because limited stock and what not can go quickly.

By "first thing on Friday", are we talking "get in line at 8AM", or are we talking "be there by 5:30"? I mean, I love hanging out with cool people waiting for things to happen, and I camped out overnight playing Munchkin with people to get a Wii, but I also understand it is to be chilly and rainy pretty much all weekend in Seattle. ;)

The letter that came with my badge asked people not to arrive before 8 on Friday, but I don't know what measures they'll take to keep a line from forming outside before then.

We have campers every year, but the "normal" early shows arrive around 7AM, and by 9 or so the line is ridiculous. If the line is too long or interfering with traffic, the police will break it up and send folks on their way, but as far as PAX is concerned, we'll not stop you.

Yeah, I overbooked last year and missed over 70% of my panels. You got to have a lot of time b/w them to get in line.
It doesn't take any time to learn you don't want to stand in a 500ft line for subway. Even just a block away there are food establishments.

Hmm, I don't know... last year, the L4D line was constantly very long. But I guess it's probably 'cause it was L4D.

They had to have something like 8-10 systems playing Left4Dead (last year?) and there had to be at least 30 people waiting in line at most times. Popular panels only had room for half the lines that would be waiting at times.
Perhaps things will ease up a bit this year with more space, but I'd be ready to wait in a decent line for anything reasonably popular.
And btw, sitting in JFK in New York waiting for my connecting flight. The new JetBlue terminal is pretty nice.

The guy at Von's - Joel - mentioned that PAX is the biggest convention to hit Seattle. Bigger than any other that comes to town with 46,000 in attendance. I imagine this doesn't count the concert festivals and stuff. But yeah, that's a lot of people.
He also remember Anjanette and was sad to hear she wouldn't be there this year.
Dude - not as sad as I am! We hooked them the fuck up last year! Have so much fun there guys - I want to see tons of pics (maybe someone can use their PS skills to make it seem like I was there?)

So Bandango asked me to put together a piece of first-time impressions of PAX for Immortal Machines and CoG, and I'm more than happy to oblige but I think it would be a little more fun as a team exercise. I'd like to lead a small discussion podcast with folks who were newbies to PAX, talking about what our expectations were, how they were met / exceeded / thwarted, and how we felt about the convention as a whole (perhaps leaving out the whole rampant illness thing, or perhaps not, who knows).
Other CoG'ers who were attending PAX for the first time, would you be interested in joining me for that? If so, shoot me a PM and I'll try to coordinate a time when we could get together on Skype and record. For manageability I'd need to keep a group discussion somewhat small, but I'll see how many interested participants I get and go from there. If there's a bunch, who knows, maybe I could do a series of really short one-on-one interviews strung together or something. :)
EDIT: If people feel this needs its own thread I can make one, but since I figured most PAX-going CoG'ers are probably subscribed to this thread and I'm asking for PM responses, a new thread might be unnecessary. I been wrong before, though.
