Are you ready for what may be the most controversial game of all time? Hollywood production company Zentropia has revealed that they're working on a game adaptation of director Lars Von Trier's eyebrow raising film Antichrist (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0870984/). The film was screened at Cannes this year and was greeted with some raves and some protestations that the film was a bit too graphic.

The game, which is titled "Eden" after the forest setting of the film, will be a first-person graphical adventure, described as a “nightmarish version of Myst.”“[The movie] goes against all the conventions of how you make games and what you can do in games. Dead kids, nudity, graphic violence. It will be a very controversial game, and it’ll be a game that doesn’t really compare with anything else.”Needless to say, this one won't be getting a retail release, but will be distributed digitally. We won't actually see Eden until next year, but the English-language version of Antichrist is expected in July, so we can get a sense of just what sort of trouble the game will stir up.

The trailer is good (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.vimeo.com%2F4062746&ei=A3k_Sr_HBsGJtgfoosW0Bg&usg=AFQjCNGqMD1ETU6B9gEjdbn7lBAfpDWSxQ&sig2=_SybPyzxvoI87mYQk_GaoQ) but not terribly explicit. From what I've read and heard, the film is very hard to watch. The term 'genital mutilation' is mentioned in most accounts of the movie.

All I really want to know is if I get to play as the talking zombie fox.

If it's any good at all, I heartily support more adult-oriented content in games. I'm a big boy, I can handle it!

Nothing he said has anything at all to do with game design. All of that shit is just as controversial in movies, and would be in books as well (if conservatives read books, lawlerskates). Hell, he basically declared it to be a Myst clone, but grimdarke.

Count me out.

I agree, kinda like the new Mortal Kombat, being "adult" for "adult" sake only makes it more juvenile.

Also, I don't see a game here, at all. I'm interested in the flick, but seems to be very talky, and vague.

Ah, what a good way to start the morning. This made me laugh aloud.

As for the game...I'd be curious to see where this could go but I'm more interested in the film. I'm a big fan of Von Trier's and it's got Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg (she is hot as fuck IMO) - two people with acting chops. The film can't get here soon enough.

'controversial game' means I'll play it - but only if it has motion captured willem dafoe.

The most shocking thing about this is that they're making a game for a Lars Von Trier movie. Will Björk be an unlockable character?

EDIT: That trailer looks amazing. I think I might have to see this movie.

So weird, this looks strangely similar to my tattoo sleeve. I think I got ripped off.

I have a tree like that in my garden. I leave it a bowl of pigs blood every full moon to appease it.

I, uh, just read why it's controversial on wikipedia, and, uh, Hostel, eat your heart out. Damn, I thought it was hard to watch that film, but this sounds... I don't know. Like a Sade adaptation.

The trailer is a pretty horrible representation of the movie then. Cause it doesn't show or even hint that weird shit occurs in the movie.

Count on many a protest for violence. Anyone see Passion have any comparison for this?

Also, why do movies about Satan have to be so violent? I'm sure he loves lolcats just as much as the rest of us...

Satan enjoys a fine port and cigar while watching babies consume each other, but to be fair, who doesn't?

Here's hoping there is a real game within all the "controversial" talk and hype. I'm all for a wait and see attitude. I don't want to be dismissive just because it's already being hyped poorly. In the meantime, i'm curious about the film. Civil, you get the popcorn, i'll grab some soy drinks :)

You just gave me a great idea for a movie, I'm gonna start on the script for a mocumentary about satan right now.

Meh. I'm unfazed by hyperbole at this point in my life.

The trailer made the film look insanely boring. Oh no, weird shit happens in the woods. Um, I'll take Evil Dead for 100 Alex. And we all know how crappy the games based on those movies were.

This actually looked closer to Eastern horror than Western horror. Which is what I like.

I also don't see why you're dragging Evil Dead into this thread. ED isn't just horror, it's also comedy.

This sounds like another Manhunt scenario to me.
If you can't make a good game, make a controversial one.

The game hasn't been developed yet, how is it a bad game exactly?

Zentropa put out Lars Von Trier's movies, movies like Dancer in the Dark and Dogville, nothing that screams Manhunt to me.

Ugh. I could not care less about how "controversial" a game is. Any fucking slack-jawed idiot can slap together a bunch of shock footage and call it a film or a game, this is just pandering to the lowest traits of humanity.

The less torture and snuff porn in the world the better, I'm of the increasing opinion that this, among other things, is probably a good sign of the decay of Western society.

Only people who never actually watched the original Evil Dead say that. It is 100% pure horror. Evil Dead 2 was a horror/comedy. Army of Darkness was a comedy.

For the most part, I'm with J Arcane on this one.

For me, the gameplay will have to carry the "controversial" aspects, not the other way around. So, if it actually does turn out like Myst (I quite enjoyed the first, if memory serves), I may actually give it a look.

I was more referring to Manhunt as being the bad game. I just have a feeling this will turn out much the same. For all the attention it will get for being controversial, I can't see it turning out to actually be a good game.
Pure speculation on my part, I'll admit.

Ah, okay. I thought you meant that they were purely going for the shock value. While this game might be controversial, it's still based on a Von Trier movie. His other movies seemed pretty artsy to me (especially Dogville), I doubt that he's just going to shock people just because. It'll probably fit in there.

Too true.

Hopefully the activists of the world will realize they best thing they could do is let this thing pass with as little attention as possible.
