View Full Version : My first Rock Concert!

I saw Fleetwood Mac at the Sommet Center in Nashville the other night.

I'm still recovering from exposure to pure awesome.

The only bad thing about it was that, in front of me, were two retarded slutty blondes who got drunk and danced in front of me. And we're not on the floor where it's safe to do that, no, WE WERE ON THE FUCKING BALCONY, where one false step could send you plummeting to your doom. I kept thinking it might be a good idea to give them both a nice shove in the back...

I was unaware how seeing a Fleetwood Mac concert made me gay or creepy.

Could you enlighten me as to what the fuck you're talking about? Or are you just pissed off at someone and are trolling to vent your frustration? Because if it's the latter, you ought to do it somewhere else.

I think he's referring to the two blonds situation.

I went to see Gnarls Barkley at USC and there was an entire row of girls dancing near a balcony. I have a fear of heights, so no dancing for me. But if it were dangerous, I'm sure they would have ushers going up and down the isles telling them there's no dancing in the balcony.

Yeah, well still, there's nothing in that situation that makes me look gay or creepy. Also, the fact that he used the implication of homosexuality as an insult on a site where half the admins have done favors for a certain gnome is not the cleverest move.

My parents actually just saw them a few weeks ago while they were here, and said it was a very well done concert, almost as good as The Eagles, which they saw a month prior.

TN isn't as conservative as most people think. We may have bible-thumping super-conservative morons in our state government (thank god our governor has some sense, though), but most of us are not at all the hicks from "deliverance" that most people tend to think of.

In any case, this concert drew a GIGANTIC crowd. We had difficulty even getting tickets months in advance.

To most men, two drunken slutty blondes dancing in front of the is a good thing. In fact, we sometimes pay for such a thing to happen. Too each their own, but I got what Dis meant right away.

Glad you enjoyed the concert. I do appreciate some Fleetwood Mac, but they are one of those "classic" bands that I like, but do not like enough to drop the usual $150 on a ticket.

Ah, the first rock concert. I remember mine! It was the only major concert to come to a nearby small town; it was mostly Canadian alternative rock like Our Lady Peace and Big Sugar. It was a really great time!

On the intersection of concerts, drunks and balconies, though, I remember back when I went to CSNY, we were right at the front of the 3rd floor section of the arena, and a group of guys sitting three rows behind us were getting incredibly drunk. Eventually, two of them were pushing each other and they fell on top of us. Nothing like a pair of 200lbs. 40-year olds falling on top of you and almost pushing you off a ledge to make a concert more memorable!

If you are going to complain about drunk girls dancing, maybe you should stay home and by the DVD. ;)

Man, my first show was White Zombie in '95. That was awesome. Babes in Toyland and Kyuss opened.

This summer I've seen The Toadies, NIN/JA and next month I'm going to see Dredg.

My first concert was a System Of A Down charity show at the Palace in Hollywood. It has since changed its name, but the memories of getting kicked in the head by crowd surfing 13 year old girls will be with me forever. As I recall it was in '00 or something, so they only had one album and played a total of 40 minutes.

My first was Trans-Siberian Orchestra. They did the song in that spam e-mail with the christmas lights in sync with music. I gotta say, they are pretty freaking metal live. It was awesome.

My favorite concert so far though was when I saw Opeth. Shrinn and I went with some friends and it was amazing. I participated in my first mosh pit there, and came out with some bruises. It was a good night.

Well, I guess I could have been clearer. If they were not completely obstructing my view and talking incessantly, thus preventing me from being able to see or even hear the concert (which they were), yeah, then that might make me gay. But I told them politely to cut it out, saying "I came to see Fleetwood Mac, not hear you blabber about how you're putting this on your fucking Myspace page". They apologized, sat down... and less than half an hour later, they were up again, talking loudly, dancing (did I mention that these blondes were ugly?), and generally pissing off every person in the vicinity.

I think I would have been a hero had I actually gone through with that "shoving them off the balcony" thing.

But I didn't.

What? You can hear people talking in a concert over the music?
That sounds like a shitty fucking concert.

I am also not a big Fleetwood Mac fan, at all.

My first Rock Show was seeing Suicide Machines (awesome Detroit Area Band) play a small bar when I was on vacation in Florida. I knew of them due to Tony Hawks Pro Skater.

I have always preferred smaller locations without chairs but still fairly packed full of people and bands who put their all into it. Also why I love Warped Tour and bands doing their first large stage tours, they are blown away and put on a better show I think.

Fleetwood Mac is okay, but what a crappy first show.

Also, I find it hard to disagree with disgust. Your comments were just weird. Also, welcome to concerts.

Mine was Manson (At least, in terms of major acts and not local shows.) Say what you will about his music (I love it, particularly his older stuff.) But there's very few performers who are his equal in terms of showmanship. I was blown away.

I've never been to a "rock concert" per se. The largest show I think I've ever attended was Broken Social Scene at City Hall in Nashville in 2006. Not sure how many people were there, but it was obviously not Sommet Center huge.

Then again, maybe there were more kids when I saw Killswitch Engage at Sloss Furnace in Birmingham. I can't remember how many were there, it's been a few years since I was into that kind of music.

I guess that blink-182's reunion tour will be my first big "concert."

What? What the fuck? Is it a corporate shit hole now?

Don't grow old, everyone. Everything you loved turns to shit.

For me (this thread was already somewhere, EvAv maybe?): I think it was Circle Jerks, circa 1980. I was 12 and got the shit kicked out of me. What you kids call the mosh pit was serious business then. It wasn't about the music, it was about getting your anger out on anyone and everyone in your path. Destruction set to music.

EDIT: You know who's surprisingly good in concert? James Taylor. The man can rock the fucking house.

EDIT 2: Congrats, Dork.

EDIT 3: Man you gotta love Riley, the little shitcunt.

First concert I ever saw was Cannibal Corpse. Not the wisest choice for a first gig, let me tell you. The music was loud, the crowd was angry and the beer was cheap.

The Palace is called the Alcove or something. Yeah, everything is changing. Every time I go back home there are more yuppies in Hollywood. Pretty soon the cheap ass souvenir shops, porno theaters, and smoke shops will have nowhere to go.

My first show was Tom Petty back in 1999. I'm going to a show Thursday with Abigail Williams, Goatwhore, Daath, S.W.W.A.A.T.S. and Abysmal Dawn.

My favorite concerts though were probably Metallica, Down & The Sword in New Orleans and NIN on the Lights in the Sky Tour.

Nothing quite so annoying as idiots who have to talk as loud as they possibly can for the duration of a show. Aside from those idiots who know every single word, yet can't sing to save their lives. Look, I'm all for you having a good time, but not at the expense of my own.

As for dancing. Honestly, if the crowd is sitting at a rock show there are two possibilities. Either A) the band is doing something very wrong, or B) you're in Vancouver. (which is why we get passed by by quite a few major non country acts).

First Concert: Van Halen on the F.U.C.K. Tour (I've done better since then... heh)

"Biggest" Concert: Metallica/Guns N' Roses/Faith No More at the Meadowlands, 2 or 3 shows before Hetfield walked into the pyrotechnics. Amazing show, but with seats so far back we were practically in the next zip code.

Other standout shows, with some of the most amazing energy from crowds I've stood in:
- Tickets on the floor to see Tool on Halloween night at Nassau Coliseum
- Live in Chicago, despite the terrible opening act they brought the house down
- Mighty Mighty Bosstones / Toasters / Mephiskapheles in the Bowery Ballroom - my friend's first ska show, and they started pulling so many people up on stage that Dickie finished his set down in the pit with the audience
- The Pilfers at the Knitting Factory - a 'reunion' show of sorts, they hadn't done a live performace in years, and had no album to support, yet they had die-hard fans drive for hours in every direction ot get there. The place was packed, and every person a real die-hard fan eager to see them play again finally. The vibe in the crowd was incredible, and an amazing concert.

I find I really only enjoy shows in the smaller venues these days, I feel too far removed at stadium performances. I like actually seeing the band and getting into the energy of the audience instead of being planted in a seat at the opposite end of an arena. It also helps that those shows tend to average around $20/ticket, instead of the insane amounts you can pay to get a reasonable seat at an arena show.

It's been a while, I really need to see if anyone decent is playing around here this summer... heh

The biggest concert I went too was Live 8, in Barrie. But that was just a crazy atmosphere, each band only got to do 3 songs. Of course, all the acts coming back on stage to do Keep On Rockin' In The Free World with Neil Young at the end was AMAZING.

The best concert? Probably Foo Fighters. Dave Grohl is an entertaining man, any way you slice it.

The concert with the most shinies and booms: Green Day on the Amercian Idiot tour. So... Much... Pyro.

The weirdest concert: D21C, basically the musicians from The Doors with the lead singer from The Cult.

Concert I most want to see: David Bowie.

Sigh, one band I will never get to see now.

I don't think I've ever been to a 'Concert'. I've been to a couple hundred smaller shows though. I don't think I'd want to go to a large arena concert, it seems like it would be a very impersonal experience, no connection. I'd rather listen to the record if that was the case.

As far as concerts go, not seeing them live is probably my biggest regret. I had tickets to see them right before Phil went down with some kind of injury related to his House of Shock haunted house in LA. If memory serves, I think after he got better they did a few dates... never making that one in Birmingham up, and then the band said fuck it and went their own ways.

What a bummer.

That being said, glad to know you enjoyed your first concert. My first concert was Aerosmith, and they put on a great show. Come to think of it, I haven't been to a concert since the 06 Ozzfest...I need to remedy that situation sometime.

My first show was hip hop, my second show was noise/breakcore and my third show was my first rock show. It was in a basement, with maybe thirty other people, and a really fun indiepop band.

That's how I like it. I am not sold on tremendous shows with ridiculous ticket prices and a necessity for things like balconies to contain the crowds in the first place. Plus I for the most part don't enjoy the bands that play those shows. I'm glad you liked your first rock concert, though.
