What is currently a pretty popular one with a large playerbase?
I mentioned in an earlier thread my love of Yu-Gi-Oh TCG in the first couple years of high school until my pals stopped playing

What are the current games being played?
I never could get into Magic, and I'm sure that's still a big one.

Just kinda wanting to somewhat get back into that hobby.
I may stop into my local comic shop and see what people are playing, but online fun is cool too.

Best way to look into new things like this is to find a shop or show near where you live. My local Elks lodge had a show every wednesday. I am sure you also have larger trade centers near you that have those "SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY!" ads.

I have found the chains like Game's Workshop to be less fun for this, as they just tend to want to seel you on a new product. But you may luck out and get a demo of a game you really like.

The two I play with a sizable player base is Magic: The Gathering (which you obviously know about) and Vampire: The Eternal Struggle (http://www.white-wolf.com/vtes/). Magic is a solid one on one game, and Vampire is more of a multiplayer social experience.

Other than those, I've found a lot of CCG's lacking. A lot of them are designed first and foremost to sell you as many packs as possible to be competitive, and the ones targeted at a younger audience are generally even worse about it. As king gorilla mentioned, finding a local shop and seeing what people play there would be an excellent step to getting your feet wet with a new game.

Magic: the Gathering will always have a pretty decent playerbase. As far as others... they tend to come and go. When I moved out here a year ago, my local shop was still hosting Yu-Gi-Oh nights, but out here I don't think there's much of that going on.

I always liked the Star Wars CCG, but I don't think anyone plays that anymore.

I'm not exactly 100% interested in restarting YuGiOh, because I'm pretty sure it is dominated by little shitdevils, which is not a group of people I really want to associate with on that kind of level. I really did enjoy my time with the game, though, but I also haven't really played any other TCG other than that.

I'll do some asking around.

In my opinion Yugi-Oh is a terrible game.

I'll be posting a TCG roundup thread here later tonight that should help to steer you towards some enjoyable games.

God I loved that game. It got me into CCGs, cause I picked up a starter deck for three bucks at a flea market. I was going to tournaments when I was 10, and playing against guys who were in their 30s. I got decimated, but I got all the cards from all the packs they didn't use.

And by the time I grew up enugh to understand the game and assemble a few (truly epic) decks...the game was done thanks to the asshats at WotC. In my opinion.

Just out of curiosity, why?
I'm not really interested in the WoW TCG, but I think I get a free deck with my reservation of Lich King, so I'll check it out at least.

Only pedophiles play Yugi-Oh.

Oh wait, some kids play too.

In all seriousness, the game is horribly designed, the cards are often broken, it's printed on crappy stock in an inconvenient size, the player base is notoriously the bad kind of creep, and much of the top-level tournament play is virtually decided by a coin toss.

I do not play the game. By virtue of the fact that it is made by UDE, I know the folks who have to judge the events. The horror stories and my experiences are enough for me to make the informed decision that this game is not for me. And it is poop.

I'm sure it's fun if you're a fan of the series though. And I'm sure there's perfectly nice, normal people who play the game. I've just never met them.

I was just curious.
Like I said, haven't played since some friends got me into it at the beginning of high school.

I enjoyed the competition with it, social games like that are way fun.

I get a lot more joy out of Munchkin, but I like deck building.
I may look back into Magic, but (as you mentioned elsewhere), a lot of the people who I know that play that are jerks.

I highly recommend WoW and the TCGs megathread I put up tonight to help you find a game.

L5R and WoW TCG are both very popular games with much friendlier fan bases than magic. They also won't wind you up on dateline with Christ Hansen.

I'm iffy about WoW only because I play the game so much.
I guess that doesn't really make sense, but it's just the mindset I'm in.
My interest in Yugioh will remain where it has since five years ago, though.

I'll check out L5R, too.
I'm going to try to find time this week to stop by the local comic shop and see if anybody there wants to guide me through the learning process.

I remember playing Vampire back when it was still called Jyhad.
And it isn't just important to have a lot of players, it's absolutely vital imho.

3 was as low as we would go, but 6 was the magic number for my group. Which was also part of the reason we didn't play very often. :(

I recommended it as well if you have a handful of people to play with. Big games can be an absolute blast.

There is always UFS. I had fun playing that for a while and your local store probably runs a night or at least tournaments. Unless they stopped making it. I haven't paid much attention to it lately.
