NXE = New Xbox Experience (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/nxe/).

Those of you out there with the Arcade flavor of Xbox 360 wondering how you're going to be able to enjoy NXE given that it 'requires a minimum of 256MB to install' can now officially let our a sigh of relief. Not for the first time, Major Nelson, speaking with the guys over at Xbox 360 Fanboy, cleared the air on exactly what will be required for NXE to install.

"The new Xbox experience will require 128MB of free space. While we expect the majority of consumers to download the New Xbox Experience without a problem, a small percentage of Xbox 360 owners do not have enough memory to accommodate the update. To help ensure all Xbox LIVE members are able to download the New Xbox Experience and enjoy its new features, Microsoft will be offering storage solutions to the Xbox LIVE community. We are not sharing details of this offering yet. Be sure to check xbox.com for more details in the coming weeks."So there you have it. Everyone should be able to partake in the promised awesomeness that is NXE - even if you're short on storage options.

Kudos to Microsoft for realizing there may be issues here and being prepared to address them accordingly.

There's already a solution: buy a HDD

What kinds of solutions are they offering. As Norse already pointed out, they already offer you the chance to buy a hard drive

I assume they are referring to online storage.

Online storage would indeed be cool. I've always wanted a way to synchronize my save games with an online storage place.

That would definitely be cool, but some of those save games take up a ridiculous amount of space, so I'm not too sure how feasible that would actually be..

Are you sure? How large are they? Are you sure patches and DLC aren't included?

Depends on the game. You can check this in the "memory" section on your console. Some are real small some are 10+MB.

I think they are only looking at this for the update, not for general use. When Steam releases "Cloud" it will upload saves and config files for supported games.

Nobody at MS ever said it'd take 256MB to install. They said you'd need a 256MB MU or higher. All that means is that the 64MB MU isn't enough. Major Nelson later clarified that it takes 128 MB for the NXE, which means that Arcade users will still have a fair amount of space for game saves.

Right, which is why I single-quoted the statement - to indicate that it was incorrect information.

Who owns the Arcade version still without a hard drive?

Surplus 20gb hdds anyone? I am sure they have some. Give them away?! Now nearly everyone would have a hdd xbox. Imagine that.

Yes, that is a pipe dream, but maybe. I think an online solution, or maybe a deal for a discounted or free memory card for arcade owners. More then likely the former.

He specifies the XBOX Live community; it's pretty obvious what he's talking about here.

I suppose if you aren't on Live, you'll never need the update or Avatars, right? I mean, the regular interface works just fine for a standalone system with no net connection. It plays games, manages saves, plays music, pictures and DVDs. One could quite happily continue on and never have to install the update, and therefore never have a memory problem.
