According to the folks over at Atari, Alone in the Dark for the PS3 will now officially be known as Alone in the Dark: Inferno. Coupled with the new subtitle, Atari and Eden Games are promising a plethora of improvements to the PS3 version that should make for a more enjoyable experience. The list of improvements are mostly moot, but one in particular deserves special mention here, and it is...
Full 360 degree camera control
How this was not implemented in the current versions of the game is anyone's guess, but there's no doubt in my mind that this one fix alone will ensure that the game itself is a far more enjoyable experience.
The PlayStation 3 version of the game will shop some time later this year, and there will be a demo available on the PlayStation Network some time in November.
I don't suppose it's too late to ask for a patch for the 360 version? If any patch deserves the label 'the patch that adds the fun', then it would surely be this one!

Full 360 degree camera control? You mean it wasn't in the original game? Wow so glad I didn't pick that up when it first came out.

Font is funky?
And I remember reading that the work done to fix the game was so broad that it would be nearly impossible to release the patch to the 360, at least, according to one of the devs. I think it was in an interview with MTV Multiplayer blog.

I think they announced that the 360 version won't be getting an update. To bad.

Wouldn't a patch for the 360 require a hard drive to install it on?

Awesome news as this game has a lot of strengths and really tries to do something special. It does not always succeed, but it is an ambitious effort. Unfortunately, the patch won't fix a number of other issues with the game, including angsty characters, terrible writing, and having to press a button in order to make your character BLINK, but better controls should help immensely.

I believe they announced that there would be a patch with the new controls and camera, but not for the new content. It can't be a priority.
...and having to press a button in order to make your character BLINK...
Might want to play more than 30 seconds of a game before passing judgment. :-)

Yes, if only the 360 had a HDD . Practically every 360 game has been patched at some point, why would the non-standard HDD suddenly be a problem for this game?

Damn straight I'm allowed to. If I get a game, play it, and don't like it, then I don't like it. That's how opinions are formed.

Eastern Europe is a huge market. Look at STALKER and the Witcher. Those folks have money to spend, and savvy publishers are pushing into those markets. Do not be surprised if Atari, making big connections there, blows up as big as Ubi.

I really wanted to play this game based on the preview videos, but then put a hold on it after the initial reviews started coming out. While I'm hoping in general that the 360 gets some type of patch, as I like the controller better and prefer to keep as many games as possible on that console, I'd consider getting it cheap on the PS3 in a while if they really do fix a lot with it.

The response to the 360 version warned me off the title, but if the reception of the PS3 version is better I might give it a go.

I could see grabbing this game cheap in April. Not a chance it'll get a second look with how crowded this Fall is right now, though.

I'm pretty sure this is the reason. The patch is too big for the requirements MS has for patches - it wouldn't fit on the baseline memory card like other patches are required to I think.

I haven't finished it yet (trying to beat the games I have from Gamefly and then I'll get back into it) but I think Alone in the Dark is a good game. It has issues, yes, but it's rare that I get to have an experience like this on the consoles. I can't quite name the primary reason, but there's a lot of little stuff that adds up to a great experience for me. I think I'm 3/4 the way through the game. I especially like that humanz enemies won't die unless you set them on fire in some way. Even if you have to drag them over to it, or bring over a piece of flaming debris. Item creation can be a bit absurd, but still fun.
I think the game definitely needs a patch on 360, but at this rate the game has been clearanced to hell, so what's the point? I spent 9.90 at GoGamer during their sale, and it's definitely worth more than that. I went in thinking this was going to be atrocious because of really bad reviews (3.5/10 IGN?? Really?) but I was pleasantly surprised.
Doesn't mean the rest of you will like it, but I definitely have enjoyed it.

I agree completely, and tried to say as much earlier before people jumped down my throat. There is a LOT that Alone in the Dark does well, and other developers in the future will surely look to the title for inspiration. sadly, there are a large number of design decisions that keep the game from being great, and are not addressed by this patch.
I hope the good folks at Atari get a chance to refine the formula of the game in the future, cause there are a lot of good ideas in there.

Yep, it's actually a great direction for the series...they just need some more time to fine tune their formula. It doesn't feel beta, but it does feel like it was rushed out before it was fully tested/tweaked. I fell of a brick...a BRICK on the GROUND...and died. Edward's animation looked like as if he was falling from 10 stories, just stuck in the air. A few weird bugs like that happened to me, like one time actions commands weren't popping up, though I could be standing next to a cabinet or item. I had to reload a save and then everything worked fine.
Also, this was one game where I though Wii-like controls would have worked so much better in some cases. Using the analog stick to swing weapons and items just seemed awkward. But...BUT...it had a great idea about it. I felt like I was actually smashing a car window when swinging a baseball bat, or at least more so than pressing the A button. It required an actual ACTION, wonky though it was.
I am glad I gave the game a chance instead of writing it off completely based on reviews. Finding it dirt cheap didn't hurt either.

The videos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zycYSZ6QSec)I saw of the Wii version had REALLY ambitious controls. Maybe I should rent the game.

With the crowded Fall, you won't need to wait till April to buy this from the bargain bin :). I'm guessing December it will be at a good price point...depends when this is coming out...but whenever, two months and you have your bargain...

I actually gave it a chance, since a number of EvAver's at the time said it wasn't as bad as the reviews (3.5 is Superman 64...it wasn't even close to that kinda bad) were stating. It has some rough patches which make it seem like it was rushed...but it doesn't stop from being fun...of course depends what fun you like...I sent it back to GF due to wanting to play other games and getting my attention ...but if you like action/survival horror or whatever the genre it is...find it in the bargain bin...I might be tempted to rent it for the PS3...

It's really bad. I went from pure rage cause I bought the collectors edition but after a hour, I was having hours of laughs and fun. The game has to be parodying Oblivion. Alas, they're are some things you'll come across that are just really wish it was in other games as wells. The magic use system is really nice. I mean this biggest thing that sticks out is the that you can stack powers cards and effect cards to do real damage. Hell, you can stack like items.

I didn't really want to make a new thread, so sorry for the bump, but I just started this last night, and the ideas are really impressive and the introduction to the game almost feels like "Uncharted 2ish" (esp the crawling on the ledges parts), but the controls are so utterly bad it's making me not want to play this anymore. I'm gonna push through it because I got a lot of games in the pipeline coming from goozex, but if they had just changed the controls of the game this would actually be pretty fun.

Did they fix it so you don't fumble in your inventory to combine stuff to make the proper ammo while the game is unpaused and you get attacked while trying to do so? Because I remember that being the killer of this game.

I loved AitD immensely for the 360. Not many games like it out there. I actually felt like I was surviving. I loved using my noggin in the game. The controls were wonky, but I got used to them. I'm glad I was able to overlook that part.
I might snag it for PS3 as well, since it's supposed to be the better version. It's part of my permanent 360 collection as it is. This is the game that got me started buying "crappy" games this generation. For 9 bucks I bought this sometime last year and when I realized how much fun I had with it in relation to the terrible review scores, I said fuck-you to reviews and started buying other games that didn't review as high. As a result I've found some fun games.

I don't think so. I was in my inventory checking out my stuff and a fire that was started in the corner spread and killed me... so.... I'm gonna go with no.

This game gets cooler and cooler the more you play it. You get to drive cars and shit? And drive through NYC as roads are breaking up like an earthquake?! pretty damn fun. And impressive driving mechanics for a game that doesn't completely rely on driving.
