Interesting. EA has announced that Battlefield 1943 - the XBLA,PSN & PC iteration of the series - will feature a "community unlockable" map. What does that mean? Well when the game has a whole has recorded 43 million kills, a fourth map - Coral Sea - will be unlocked for all players. That's in addition to the three previously announced maps: Wake Island, Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima.
Battlefield 1943 will be released this summer for XBLA and PSN, with a PC release following in September. The game will cost 1200 MSP/$15.

I liked the idea of the community goals in Noby Noby Boy. I wonder how long it will take to unlock this.

I see EA trying cool stuff, and it just kills me that they're below profit goals, or whatever you call it. I hope they don't catch so much flack that they change course again.

I'm going to buy this like a bitch. I played so much BF1942 back in the day that I still remember all the angles of these islands. Add full destructibility a la Bad Company? Yes, please.

Man I loved 1942. We'll have to see about this.

At $15, this thing is going to sell like crazy.

EA has been doing some really progressive things that I wouldn't expect such a big publisher to do. They're looking at what the industry will be and are doing it first. I really hope it pays off for them in the end.

I haven't missed a Battlefield game yet, and at $15 this certainly won't be the first.

This community idea is fantastic in my opinion. As long as in game they have some way to see the progress.

I was already all over this, but this makes it even cooler.

Joystiq is reporting (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/29/battlefield-1943-coral-sea-map-unlocked-through-community-chal/#comments)that the 43 million number is individually on each platform, not an accumulated total, so if one console's player base is lacking, it will hold everyone back.
Not as nice as it should be, but still an interesting idea.

The only thing f'ing this up at the moment is you have unlimited ammo and regenerating health this time around.
If DICE heard enough flack they may have taken that out, but at initial press play those were features in order to make it more "mass market".

Honestly, I can see why they're doing it if they're trying to make the game appeal to more than the hardcore shooter crowd or Battlefield vets.

Yes but it allows for an inter-platform contest and therefore amusing fanboy wars to watch from a distance.

Ah, for a minute, I read 'Coral Sea' was 'Midway'. Ah well. Coral Sea was fun but predictable, Midway was fucking awesome.
