Since it is Thursday I figured I'd do a look on Xbox Live this morning and saw that the Fight Night Round 4 demo was now available. I haven't seen a press release yet from EA about it, so I'm not sure if it's available on PSN as well.

Now I get to wait until I get home to play it...d'oh!

So, anyone give this a shot yet? They finally released it for the PSN this past Thursday and I am not impressed at all.

It just doesn't "feel" like Fight Night. No parry, the movement seems more clunky, the camera pans into some weird angles, and no mapping punches to the buttons. The last one doesn't bother me personally, but I know a few have expressed rage about this.

It'll probably end up a rental for me, and chances are I'll grab FFR3 somewhere in a bargin bin for my boxing entertainment.

Ya it's pretty broken. For me the no parry didn't matter but the horrible lack of speed(especially for those two fighters), the lack of graphics polish(it looks amazing) but other than a couple things doesn't look leaps about FN3. The engine for showing damage is way behind when compared to say the new MMA game.
And yes the moving was JANKY as hell. It was almost bad enough to make you think it was missing inputs. Far less smooth than advertised.
I will rent it. And who knows they may fix all that.

I haven't tried it yet, but that's a shame to hear that it's not good.

If you haven't yet played FNR3 then you need to...like...now! That game was simply awesome and probably the best boxing game ever.

Sounds like a let down. I remember a developer video interview where he was talking about how the game was faster and more fun than Round 3. Huh.

Well its a demo so they can certianly fix much of it.
The speed...probably not.
I got worried the the developer was just BAGGING on FN3. It was dumb, not cool boring, not technical enough. That made me worried when he basically ran down a checklist of the reasons i thought the game was fun and...said they were the reasons it sucked.

So you mean to tell me that the gameplay is slower than in FNR3?

This does not look good for my pre-order.

Compared to the new UFC game?

Absolutely horrid.

I'm hearing that you can't configure the controller to map the punches to the face buttons. Is this true? I preferred the buttons to the analog stick, and used the stick for blocking.

If it is, I may have to reconsider my potential purchase of this game.

It is and if the main developer is to be believed it is one of the MAJOR things he just does not want to switch. The pure spit and hate that guy had for people who liked the face buttons was pretty amazing actually.
It appears people who like face buttons may actually be future criminals.
Yes slower than Fight Night 3 for those asking.

Sounds like this group did a Kudo Tsunoda. Took a great game and fucked it up.

My thoughts:
I didn't think it was nearly as bad as you all have made it sound, but I do have to say that it doesn't feel nearly as responsive as FNR3 was (for me, it seemed like it was harder to throw the different punches than round 3). The AI would also leave the head open for a bunch of punches to the face, But would magically be able to block haymakers about 99% of the time.
FNR3 was pretty much perfect and the people at EA Chicago did a great job of making a fun boxing game (and I don't watch boxing).
I know that it was a different dev team for round 4 (EA Chicago was closed if I remember correctly), so I can imagine that that is part of the difference.
I thought the graphics were fine albeit not much of an upgrade over R3.
I did play about 7 or 8 games (3 rounds each) of the demo in a row and will probably go back for more. I couldn't get more than one knockdown and won by decision every time. Either the two fighters are really evenly matched, or the difficulty has really been ramped up.

This does make me want to go try and dig up a copy of FNR3 though ( I played it on the 360) (hmmm...$20)

So, I think I'll still give it a shot.

I played the demo about the same, and only managed to get a knockdown on the guy once. The game seems to be alot more about movement counters to do major damage. Weave around his punch, and you will notice the camera somewhat pan in, that is your ticket to go for a counter punch. If you can pull off the haymaker at this time, you can knock them down, or put them into trouble where they may drop or just clinch to recover.

My problem is that having to press L2 or whatever as the haymaker modifier makes it tough to do all these motions at once. I much preferred the haymaker in FFR3, where you could just pull the analog back more to get more oomph on the punch.

All and all, Goozex is sending me FFR3 for 300pts, which is about $10. I have a feeling I will be much happier than going with the new one.
