Never has a mediocre amusement park ride generated so much cash. Disney Interactive today announced Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned, and all new game set for release next year on the current crop of platforms.

Armada of the Damned is not linked to any new film, instead it's a prequel of sorts to the movie trilogy. Developer Propaganda Games describes the game as an open world, action RPG which takes place on land and sea. Details beyond that were slim, but expect a mix of nautical adventure and supernatural hijinks similar to the films. What you shouldn't expect are appearances by the stars of the three films: Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom or
Keira Knightley.

I can do without Bloom or Knightley, but what I'd really like is to have a game which manages to capture the fun of the first movie, before the plot got stupidly convoluted and the everything got far too serious for its own good.

A fallout3-esque pirate rpg? lol.

i played PotC on 360 and a little bit of PotC Online (when it went free) - pass on this new game.

I wish pirate games didn't suck so fucking hard. Monkey Island and Sid Meier's Pirates are pretty much the best we've ever gotten, followed by like, Sea Dogs. Nine out of ten times pirate games just end up releasing as an unplayable mess.

EDIT: Just in case developers are reading this... I want to go over some things that I want to see in a pirate game, outside of it being a decently polished product.

A proper third-person open world environment, including walking around on land masses, in towns, and all over my own ship, seamlessly.
Steering my ship from behind the wheel, instead of from the sky.
Low emphasis on crew management.
High emphasis on ship-to-ship combat (including boarding), town raids, and treasure expeditions.
Supernatural elements associated with pirates, including ghost ships, magical Aztec treasure and curses, sea monsters, mermaids... etc.
Full character customization; I want to play a pirate captain of my own making.
The ability to take and hold a town, making a pirate haven.
