Thought i may as well start a thread for this stuff given i'm going to have a lot more to say on it in the future. 40k has taken over my whole family now, started with my brother picking up the reach box set on sale, lead to me getting a small eldar army which lead to my brother and dad getting necrons and SM armies respectively. We've not even sorted out a good sized fold out gaming table and all hehe so i thought i'd post a few pictures of the games we had over the weekend while my brother was up.

My army, it's grown a bit since i last posted, i'll stick a list up after the pictures.

The board we are using, i've been messing about with papercraft building and such since it's a quick way of getting rather good looking bits. I intend on making my own out of cardboard and such as well as putting the best paper craft on card and such.

Poor avatar sacrificed him self to tie up gaz skull there :( In that match we both made some mistakes but the orks won due to 3 very lucky events. I'd all but wiped out his army but he'd chewed up a lot of my scoring units too but looked like i should win. My harlies utterly failed in close combat againts gaz, didn't expect them to win but they should have tied him up for at lest one turn. Didn't and so gaz could tie up an objective instead, a truck of boys managed to not die, truck blew up and blasted by half my army they still past pinning and leadership test... and then the 3 of them managed to kill 3 dires and a fire seer to take a point. His second truck of boys managed to not only stay together after 3 hits and a hail of fire his grot riggers got it running and to a point just for the end.

my little brothers necrons vs the orks. It's slightly annoying how damn easy it was for him to paint a good looking army hehe

My list as it stands,

Farseer,
Avatar,
Warlock,
5x rangers
20x dire
20x guardians
2x wave serpents
3x war walkers
1x fire prism
10x harlequins

Need a shadow seer to go with the harlquines (i use one already just not with the awesome model) some firedragons and maybe there phoenix lord with maybe another wave serpent for them and another fireprism. After that i will have to see. Didn't really intend to go full mech but i seem to be heading that way so i might go jetbikes hehe

oh also my first attempts at painting. Not done anything like this since i was a kid so there a tad messy, beil tan and my own colours. Think i'm going to run with beil tan, pain in the ass to do but looks really good on the table even when it's a little messy :)

Any one else playing at all? pictures and such would be fun. I may do some battle reports or such at some point and post 'em here heh

I wish I had friends that had the time and/or money for this. I played 40K back in the early 90s, but have since lost my army through multiple moves. Now I just have to wait patiently for someone to make an online version (come on Cyanide!). ;)

Nice Eldar collection, btw.

Go 'dar! I loves me some space elves. I never get to play anymore, though. Stupid real life interfering with my mini gaming.

A lot of friends and friends of friends of mine play, but I just don't have the disposable income for a decent-sized army :(

I'm thinking about picking up the Assault on Black Reach starter this weekend. I hope i have the time to learn to paint some minis.

The black reach box set is really very good, even more so if your interested in SM or orks. My brother picked it up cheap 'cus he just wanted to relive his childhood a little and paint some orks and stuff but since we could play we had a few games when he came up and it's snowballed from there heh

I'll second the Black Reach box being awesome. It's a great value for both Orks and Space Marines, and a great way to start playing.

I'm hoping for a new Space Wolves codex soon...

Well your hopes are being answered it's one of the next in line for codexs with darkeldar and witchhunters i think. Dark eldar really really really need a new codex, it's not been updated in so long it's almost unfair, it would be awesome to see a new range of models for them too

Awesome! I too, would like the Dark Eldar to get a new codex. I know that several sources have said that there was a new codex at one point, but they shelved it because of a "lack of interest," or something like that. I know they've been slowly working on it for a while, with several of their sculptors making comments on things they've created. We'll see soon.

I enjoy 40K but have not played it in a long time, all the people I used to paly with at the shop were basically power gamers which does not equal fun, for me anyway. They would do anything to win like "forgetting" rules when it was helpful to them and suddenly remembering them when it was bad for them. They would also min-max as much as possible etc.

I do enjoy playing with my brother every once and awhile but he does not like playing to much as he has Tau he just does not like them not much. We both only have about 1250 points worth of models (I have nids and guards) and his combo of Tau stuff just does not seem to gel as well as mine. He is thinking of buying some orks this summer so maybe we will start playing again more.

The paper craft is an awesome idea for building there Hotcod I wish I thought of that to get more varied terrain and try out things at home.

The paper craft stuff is rather looked down from what i've seen of 40k forums which is a shame. I mean it's clearly not as good as built or brought solid stuff but that's not the point. Not every one has the time, talent or money to fix up a good looking table at home and that's a shame as a good looking table really helps with the fun, even just having that silly badly made gate house in the middle made the game in the pictures more fun.

For the moment my plan is going to be trying to build a small city of paper craft, i'm likely going to have to recolour of make some my self to get what i want. Just means we can quickly mix and match things and such. Then move on to a kind of modular system to fix brought or built stuff on to as i bother to build really stuff... but my hunch is for home gaming paper craft might be the best way to go other than some big set pieces and the hills and such since it's relatively quick and easy once you find what your looking for. If it was more wide spread for 40k and the like it would be even better 'cus there would be more stuff made for it.

Oh man this is making me miss it now.

I used to have a killer Ultramarine army. Took ages painting them and ended up losing them in some move.

I doubt I'd have the time and patience to paint an army again.

The Fishman has been tempted by the illicit pleasures of the Workshop of Games for some time and today he finally caved, buying a Tau battleforce boxed set and a load of painting supplies. Unfortunately, myself and Mrs Jonno were in the store with him and I was given the greenlight to buy a few bits and pieces. I have the bare bones of a Daemonhunters army to get started with, I'll have to see if I can still paint as well as I used to.

I just picked up around $800 worth of NIDS for $300. Not too shabby.

I spent about 5 hours from start to finished gluing to putting the final touches on a Space Marine Commander that i bought. I did this all in one sitting so i'm hurtin just a tad. Pics tomorrow.

So my brother is up this weekend with a new grey knights army so we decided to play which we haven't done in over a year heh. Just had our self's a refresher game of my eldar vs his orks. He gave me a 200 point handcap advantage 'cus I've never come close to beating his current ork army.

I just slaughtered him.

After our last game I spent some time working on my army list to better counter his play style and a lot of those changes worked out very well. I also got some awesome bladestorms off.

But I think the most important fact is that I've been playing "orcs must die" a lot today already... I didn't have it in me to see orcs and not make them die
