According to Shacknews (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/55223)

Developer Konami has announced that a new entry in its vampire-slaying Castlevania franchise in is development for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, reports ITmedia.

Few details are known at this point. Following a brief teaser trailer depicting a well-dressed man with a glowing red sword, series producer Koji Igarashi commented that he hadn't expected the game to be announced yet.

The new title will mark the first Castlevania game designed for the PS3 and Xbox 360. While the franchise traditionally has players exploring a 2D or 3D castle, the series is soon expanding into the fighting genre with Castlevania Judgment (Wii).

Remember how Metroid Prime brought that gameplay into 3D expertly? They should do that.

Personally, I wouldn't mind a 2D game rendered with 3D sprites, like Viewtiful Joe.

They should so that but as we have already seen, they can't. I think I'll stick with the DS for my Castlevania goodness.

The upcoming DS Castlevania title got an excellent review in this month's EGM.

Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles was supposed to be a test to see if they could pull that off. I think they did that okay, and the buzz surrounding Sonic Unleashed and Little Big Planet shows that the idea has some legs.

Whatever it ends up being, attention received.

Curse of Darkness was awesome and probably had the best story yet in the series. I anxiously await more info.

Personally, I wouldn't mind a 2D game rendered with 2D sprites, like Braid. There is absolutely no good reason, besides cost, to use 3D graphics in a 2D game. It looks like shit, even in Viewtiful Joe. 2D sprites always look better, you just can't make certain kinds of games with them.

That said, I'm betting this will be like those PS2 Castlevania games, which were straight 3D.

Well, I said build from there. DMC is too light on the character building and much more linear than a "real" Castlevania. CV could be great in 3D, it just hasn't been done right.

I really liked the Castlevania: Curse of Darkness game on PS2, and it was 3D.
It played like DMC and SotN had a bastard offspring. I was a big fan of the item combining, raising pets/demons systems.

Take one part DMC and one part Bionic Commando a little black eyeliner and the tears of a Gothic virgin (I.E. fat chick in a black dress) stir slowly over low heat until it comes to a boil and let sit overnight.

I haven't played a good Castlevania since Symphony of the night (I don't have any handelds) so I would be ecstatic if this was a 2D platformer with current gen graphics

I actually really dug Curse of Darkness as well - but still preferred Lament of Innocence - did a great job with kickstarting the whole Castlevania storyline.

"From this moment on, the Belmont clan HUNTS THE NIGHT!"

Awfulsome voice acting!

I'm all up for using 2D sprites. Wario Shake (http://www.youtube.com/experiencewii) and Muramasa: The Demon Blade (http://www.mmv.co.jp/special/game/wii/oboromuramasa/) are great examples of the modern application of more traditional 2D animation techniques can accomplish.

I wonder if someone will come along and make a real anime game. I don't mean a game based on an anime, but a game developed in tandem with a traditional 2D animation team to shatter what we traditionally think of as video game animation and storytelling. Castlevania with an anime look is not an unfamiliar direction (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSxIq3S7kaI&feature=related) for the series, and could truly start something unique.

To say that 2D games rendered using 3D models always look bad is just wrong. Different, yes. But they aren't always ugly, not by a longshot.

Generic...I don't think that passes the test.

There was quite a bit of exploration in Metroid Prime. Much more than you'd find in your typical FPS. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but I'd say that Retro did a great job connecting the adventure hook of Super Metroid to first-person structure.

I put off playing the Prime series simply because I resented the jump to the FPS-style gameplay.

When I finally bit the bullet and tried it, I was floored. It was really fun. The same level of exploration/backtracking was present as in other Metroid games. I got used to the FPS style in nearly no time at all. It felt like a Metroid game was supposed to, regardless of style. Including the environments, enemies, and music. Tell me you didn't shit bricks the first time you ran into a Chozo Ghost, the screen went dark, and the music kicked in. :D

I am one who initially disliked it for the chosen style, and I eventually ate my words.

What? No! Castlevania should be about exploring a vast castle and uncovering secrets in a nonlinear way. I don't want some cheap action game rip off like they tried to do on the xbox.

A good Castlevania for 360 and PS3 would be designed for XBLA and PSN and it would be 2D.

QFT

Seriously, more companies need to be doing what Capcom and Namco have been doing on digital distribution. Re-invent your classics here please! There is no reason why they couldn't have just ported/ made Order of Ecclesia (or however you spell it) to the XBLA/PSN/WiiWare, spiffy beefed up graphics or not. The DS titles have done very little to justify themselves being exclusively for DS and I would to see them do something similar to what they did on the PSP for digital distribution.

Variable Gear

I don't get it either. Konami's just been sitting on the IP for the past few years, at least in terms of console iterations. Sure, they released SOTN once more, but they should have done much more than that. As you point out, Capcom and Namco have done a great job in revitalizing their classic franchises for the modern age, and it would be nice if Konami did the same for Castlevania.

I disagree. It's exceptionally generic. They took Super Metroid and made it 3D and in turn made it worse. There's nothing fantastic about what Retro did with it.

For the life of me I cannot understand why some games need to be made 3D just for the sake of. Castlevania works exceptionally well in a 2D format. Leave it alone. Or, better yet, take some time off of the series.

Turning Castlevania into a 3D fighting game is akin to making Mario a squad-based FPS. It just doesn't connect in any meaningful way.

Doctor Setebos

There will be at least 37 for the DSI37? I think that's a bit of an exaggeration. I mean, at some point they're going to run out of references to music. Symphony. Harmony. Aria.

Of course, now they're switching to phrases like Order and Judgment. What's next? Dominance of the State. Repression of the People. Subjugation of the Working Class.

Castlevania will eventually become nothing more than communist political commentary. Possibly propaganda. You heard it here first.

What was the second one on the DS? I tried that one, but...it was the same as the last ones for the last 20 years.

And I do not think 37 is too far off for versions available on the DSI if Nintendo delivers on their promise of downloads for almost everything.

While I would be happy if they only made 2D Castlevania games until the end of time, I don't think the 3D games are horrible. I don't like them enough to play them myself but the characters and cut scenes are enough to get me on the couch next to Kats while he plays them so I'm sure I'll be doing the same for this game.

Maybe one day they'll make my dream Castlevania: A 2D console game with Odin Sphere levels of sprite detail. Hell, they should just let Ayami Kojima hand paint every sprite for the game. =3 Or possibly even the artist for Order of Ecclesia. I'm growing quite fond of that artwork, though maybe Dawn of Sorrow/Portrait of Ruin just have me clamoring for anything a little more traditional. Great games, of course, but I don't miss the art style.

Edit:
it was the same as the last ones for the last 20 years.
I certainly hope so. They have a damn good formula going and it would be a shame if they changed it drastically. I like the minor tweaking that they do each game - a new fighting system one game, a different way of powering up special moves another game. It's enough to make each one fun to play on it's own without leaving you wishing you were instead playing SoTN. Because, lets be honest, we all just want more SoTN. :)

If Castlevania goes 3D, it better be like Prince of Persia. Even then I don't think it would be that great.

Awesome looking Sprites, particles, a large world... yeah, that is how I want Castlevania to be.

The whole layout of a castle made up of rooms means a 3D camera will end up sucking.
