View Full Version : Stephen Hawking : The future of the human race is in space

Hawking, in an exclusive CNN interview, said that if humans can survive the next 200 years and learn to live in space, then our future will be bright.
"I believe that the long-term future of the human race must be in space," said Hawking, who is almost completely paralyzed by the illness ALS.
"It will be difficult enough to avoid disaster on planet Earth in the next 100 years, let alone next thousand, or million. The human race shouldn't have all its eggs in one basket, or on one planet. Let's hope we can avoid dropping the basket until we have spread the load."

I like the way he thinks and wish to subscribe to his newsletter.

Hasn't he said this before?
Regardless, I don't have faith in humanity's ability to work together such that we can survive long term off of Earth.
Thus, I believe it's highly likely humanity will go extinct one day. Hopefully after I'm long gone.

The guy is overrated. If he's so smart, why can't he walk?
I'm really, really sorry.

I do like Hawking but you have to admit, this is a little bit duh! It's a pronouncement almost as bleedingly obvious as "Analyst says PS3 should be cheaper."
I'm all for space. space mining. space colonies. humans in space. lets go. the knowledge gained not only about our physical realm and technology but also about ourselves and how we treat each other will be immpossible to quantify. I can't wait. LETS GO.

Yeah, the idealistic side of me says that a handful more generations should see some pretty good progress in where we stand as a species and might just finally get to where the stars become a little more important to us.
Then again, the pessimistic side of me says that the idealistic side of me is smoking something.
Just someone let me know when I can go buy my own firefly class spaceship.

I agree with his statement, but I believe that most thinking people do.

And, how long has it been since we've even been to the moon?
Short term? Yeah...pipedream, and he's been smokin'.
Long term? That's not a prediction; it's an eventuality, statistically, which makes it little more than a statement that anyone could have come up with.
Private Space Flight is gunna blow up hopefully. Grow and create industries. Tourism is the jump off but not the driver. Mining, science, other shit. I'm down. lets do it...
/shill space travel
sorry

Space hasn't exactly been on the forefront of everyone's minds in the last decade or so...unless of course, something goes wrong.
Aahahahahah I totally missed all the potential for hilarity There.

Hell, need to get out of the Solar System. It's not like the Vulcans are just going to come and give us warp drives. We killed the grays and locked them up in Area 51. Our best bet is to attract alien life, and be ready to fight them when they come so we can steal their shit.

Might be stating the obvious, doesn't make what he says any less spot on.

Cos his brain draws so much power he doesnt have any left to prevent his muscles from decaying?
His book, a Brief History of Time, is awesome.

No shit, Steve.

We'll fuck ourselves good and proper, soon as well way western civilization is going, but not extinct. We're worse then cockroaches, we adapt too well to the craziest shit.

Unless, of course, faster of light travel for people is impossible.

Then we'll build the TARDIS, travel through time and space to get to place within seconds of leaving.

So he is teaming with Admiral British to spread all of the DNA that he collected?
