Here are the software and hardware numbers from Japan, straight from Media Create (http://www.m-create.com/ranking/), for the week 05/04 to 05/10.
With there being no new software releases last week it was relatively quiet. However, Nintendo took advantage of the Golden Week (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Week_(Japan)) holiday period and stormed back to the top of the hardware charts. In fact, Nintendo's 3 platforms were the only hardware to see an increase in sales from the previous week. Meanwhile, the 360 fell to a humiliating 5,068 units, putting it at the bottom of the hardware chart, reminiscent of the Original Xbox days. As always, the 360 will need some new software if it's going to entice Japanese consumers.
The lack of new software gave established franchises a chance to shine with Monster Hunter, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Wii Fit, the new Wario Ware, and Mario and Luigi RPG 3 all selling well.
This week Edge-Online had a quote from Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, which I found particularly silly.
Iwata: Over One Fifth Of Japanese People Own A DS (http://www.edge-online.com/news/iwata-over-one-fifth-of-japanese-people-own-a-ds)
Nintendo has revealed figures detailing just how far the DS has managed to penetrate the Japanese, North American and European markets.
“In Japan, more than one in five people own a DS. On the other hand, in the US and in Europe, the sales have not yet reached to one in ten people yet,” company president Satoru Iwata said during a recent presentation.
26.1 million DS systems have been purchased in Japan. Had each of those handhelds been bought by a different person, more than one in five Japanese people would own a DS.
I'm glad Edge-Online at least had the mind to point out the possibility that not every single DS sold was owned by a different person. To give just one example, consider the original DS, aka the DS Fat. I used to see a DS Fat in the wild on most days, as little as 6 months ago. But now, following the DSi release, I'm lucky to see one in a month. In fact, most video stores don't even stock second hand DS Fats anymore, despite stocking tens of DS Lites and DSis. Where have all the DS Fats gone? I can only imagine that there is a DS Fat landfill somewhere, on the scale of the Atari video game burial of 1983 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_video_game_burial).
Winning Eleven Playmaker 2009 (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-10l-49-en-70-3ag1.html) for the Wii is probably the standout software release for this week. The PSP also has Bleach: Heat the Soul 6 (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-ch-49-en-70-3agi.html) and Growlanser (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-ch-49-en-70-3a2n.html).
