I've been absorbed by the world of Titan Quest, and I'm having a blast. I have to say that I haven't found a game as addictive and engaging as this in ages, especially in terms of loot drops and the obsessive need to continually upgrade my gear. I was literally grinning like an idiot over my most recent acquisition and the effect it had upon my resistances and stats/abilities.
The good:
- grind-worthy. There's plenty of reason to want to continue to grind upward in level, and a reasonable variation in enemies to make it worthwhile.
- along with the above, there's a continual drive to upgrade your gear, with loads of drops to make it frequent, possible and fun.
- pretty looking. I'm enjoying the color palette a lot. It's brighter than many of the games from this generation that I've been playing. I suppose I've been starved for something beyond gray/brown.
- single-player friendly. Sometimes I just want to play a game alone (more often than not nowadays), and this one is great solo. I can't comment on its multiplayer, as I haven't tried it, and probably won't.
- a reasonably coherent storyline with decent voice-over work. Not badly done. I recognized one of the voices from an educational video I had seen on the Anglo-Saxons, in fact. I'm pretty sure of it, though not definitively certain.
- replay value. I'm on my second play-through, on epic, with a third to go on legendary. The enemies, loot, relics, charms and the like are suitably empowered on the higher difficulty.
- customizable. I like being able to tweak the weaponry and armor with relics and charms of varying effects. It feels a lot more like 'my' character that way.
The bad:
- Some battles have felt a bit like they follow a :drink health potion -- attack -- run in circles to evade and survive -- drink health potion -- repeat: cycle. I've succumbed to that necessity with some of the tougher creatures, when my kit wasn't up to the challenge. I'm not fond of the need to lug around a few dozen health potions, slugging them down while I go.
- Some of the respawn points are a bit too far from 'boss' battles, making me hoof it in order to get back there when I die and respawn. Do I need to be reminded that I've died a ton of times by having to walk back from a ways away?
The ugly:
- I can't, for the LIFE of me, get a complete set of gear. Argh.
If you haven't played this game, do. It's a terrific third-person, dungeon-crawling, loot-collecting, hack-and-slash game.

I went nuts with this game back in November. I played the heck out of it, but got sort of burned out just after the beaches. I really need to get back into this game (among many others). It really scratches that Diablo itch.

I own this and its expansion: Immortal Throne. After my friend and I just blew through Champions of Norrath and Champions: Return to Arms, we have been thinking about popping this one back in the ol' PC.... good choice on your part, though! Makes me wanna play again.

Thanks for reminding me this is sitting on my hard drive. It was on sale for ~$3 several months ago and I grabbed two copies, one for me, one for my friend. Finals are this week and then we'll actually have time to play it! It sounds like a lot of fun, I can't wait to try it.

Unless you're insanely lucky, farm areas/bosses as a full-time job, or trade with someone online, you're probably not going to. The OCD part of me hated that.
That said, Titan Quest provided hundreds of hours of entertainment for me and some friends for a few months a while back, although I did get a little too obsessed with the meta-game of charm/relic collection and artefact creation. I've got multiple inventories literally full of artefact recipies, artefacts, charms and relics, and more time was spent farming than actually playing normally by the end. Sabre Claws still give me nightmares.
Also, for anyone who hasn't gotten all the way through, do not despair, and give it another go. Act 3 in the Orient is my favourite and IMO has some of the best levels and monsters in the game. It's certainly the nicest looking. Makes up for the drab-ness that is Egypt.

I'm a big fan of the game, but I ran into a wall at the very end. At least, I'm pretty sure it was the very end. I had created a rather odd niche class that was alot of fun to play, but just couldn't put out the damage needed to beat the final boss. I'm sure it would have been easy with a group, but after working on the boss for over an hour straight, i gave up. It was a little upsetting as I wanted to see what the expansion had to offer. But seeing as you have to beat the game to play the expansion, I never made it that far.
I can't really recommend it, but I had a ton of fun playing a Hunter/Defense character. I had just seen 300 and wanted a spear and sheild character. It was a great combination up until the very end.

The last boss, assuming we're talking about *spoiler*
Typhon, at the top of Mount Olympus shouldn't be too hard, as long as you move whenever he's about to attack.

You know, I just started playing this the other day. It is a ton of fun. I agree that a bunch of the harder battles end up being Slash --> Run & Potion --> Slash --> ...
I just love the physics engine. Knocking some monster flying into a wall is so satisfying.

Yep, that's the one. I doubt he's that hard to take down in most fights, but it just wasn't working on the character I had made. It's been a while since i played so I'm a little foggy on the details, but I clearly remember not being able to do enough damage. I'd struggled through the last few levels as well, but I'd learned to use the hunter's net ability to single out my targets. It was a very niche play style and it came back to bite me in the end.
If i ever get my computer virus free again, I'll be giving the game another go.

Unless you're insanely lucky, farm areas/bosses as a full-time job, or trade with someone online, you're probably not going to. The OCD part of me hated that.
I'm doing my best to hold on to the best pieces I come across (limited inventory space sucks), in the hope that I'll get a few more pieces to go with them. I got insanely lucky at one point recently and got two pieces of one set (weapon and an armor piece for a crystalline set) to drop in one area. I also have two pieces of a battle mage set, but I'm a melee fighter. Still, I'm hanging on to these pieces, as they're as close as I've gotten to completion on a set.
That's been my only real frustration, honestly. I'm not one to go the route of the TQ Vault, or whatever that program is which allows you to save and swap pieces. It's not worth that kind of investment/bother to me. I'll just keep playing and hoping for some luck.
Great game. Such a blast. Very addictive.
As for the final boss, I went in with 100 potions and just pulled a "hit--potion--run" routine. It worked for me, but felt a bit lame.
...Champions of Norrath and Champions: Return to Arms...
If there's anything that makes me want a PS2 or BC-PS3, it's those two games. I loved the Baldur's Gate Xbox games; different from their distant PC relatives, but a heckuva ton of fun.

My entire problem with the game is that its the SAME THING every time. Makes it so that I have to take long breaks between playthroughs.
When playing, I find I want to be able to A) Hit hard and B) take a hit. That usually means I have to take Defense somewhere. My last game was Earth/Dream, and man, did I get tossed around a lot.

Same problem; it was a hunter/melee (not sure which kind) hybrid but I could never cause enough damage and get out of the way quickly enough. I sort of figured I would have to go back and strengthen up a little, but I never did. I really don't mind bosses being bosses, but when they are so overpowered compared to even other bosses you do wonder what the devs were thinking.

Dream is obscene. I wouldn't play it on your first game, it ruins you for the other sets. My first playthrough of the game (years and years ago) was Dream/Defense, and I was unstoppable.

Dream is a ridiculous tree since it has the combined utility of several trees at once and yet the individual skills are as powerful (if not more) than the other abilities of the game.
I am not a fan of Titan Quest, I found the setting rather bland and while the visuals are high quality, the game has a complete lack of style (at least to me).

I enjoyed this when I played it, it didn't have the kick-ass loot table like Diablo II, I remember getting awesome gear early on, gear that I equipped for a little too long. But it had nice graphics and a nice change of scenery.
I'm glad the lead dev on Diablo III wants to fix the problem with sets that DII and Titan Quest had. By the time you found the whole set you were too high a level.

My biggest complaint with the game. :(
I want more 'cohesive' loot drops, with items in sets. The statistical probabilities of such drops needed to be patched, in my opinion, to offer a higher chance of such a 'reward.'
Or, they should have opened it up like Oblivion, and let me cheat my way to an item if I want. After all, I'm playing it...let me enjoy it as I see fit! :)

Correct. Extra stuff from the expansion applies to the regular acts. It really just adds an extra act to the end of the game, as well as Dream mastery, 10 extra levels to the level cap, and various other stuff.

I played through the first two acts without the expansion as I didn't have the bandwidth at the time to download it, and when I finally installed it the storage alone was a godsend which helped infinitely.
If you're only playing for the story or something I guess you don't need the expansion, but I think it adds plenty of tweaks which make it worthwhile (during the regular acts) and if you plan to get it eventually I would recommend getting it for use through the main campaign.
EDIT: Also of note, you can very quickly and easily import your regular campaign character into the expansion, all exp and items intact, so you don't have to restart from the beginning if you got halfway into the original game without using the expansion.

Is there any combination of class that blows things up all around me but can also survive a hand to hand melee?
My first choice is warfare + rogue (Assassin)
Second choice is Earth + something else.
I don't have the expansion yet so haven't a clue what Dream thingie will really do for me. Any suggestion? (I also don't like having my own pet, I like doing the dirty work of killing everything with my own two hands :D)

Well dream is kinda what you want, esp combined with warrior it's melee heavy plus a fair bit of melee AOE. There's a cool move which let's you teleport into a group and do a HUGELY damaging AOE to everything around you. Destroys most regular mobs standing there then you finish off those that run in after that with melee/other skills.

As Lon Lon says, Dream is where it's at for the big kabooms, but you'd need the expansion. For the original, your best bets may well be Assassin (the posion bombs, which I can't recall the proper name of can do some nasty AOE damage when upgraded.
It sounds a bit silly, but Hunters (I went Hunting/Nature, but Hunting/Rogue is a good one as well) can be one of the best AoE classes. Marksmanship, fully upgraded with all the other abilities like volley and scatter shot can take down some large groups of mobs in just one shot sometimes. It's great hearing that little 'pink' sound as your shrapnel scatters off into multiple bad guys. It's basically a long rage AoE railgun. :D

That was my first char too and it's amazingly fun, especially when you get it to the stage that your procs are proccing. It's hilarious when you just see an enemy's toe at the side of the screen then shoot a single arrow in that direction and you're suddenly deaffened by the sound of 30 aoe procs chaining off each other, and you walk up ahead and see 10+ bodies lying on the floor.
I would definitely recommend that class for fun but I guess it's not really melee like OW may want (although you can give yourself a nice pike with a crazy aspd buffed by your talents for when they get close, but they rarely will be able to...).

Personally, I don't care how I kill them. I just want to "blow them up" any way I can, be it as a melee character or a magic user or a hunter. Only reason why I tend to avoid magic user is because I don't like dieing a lot. :p I don't know how well magic users can survive on Titan Quest in face of a mob.
I've noticed none of you guys mentioned Earth.

I have 0 experience in all my chars with the elementals sorry, but yeah I'd advise you try making the archer then. I did archer + naturalist but I'm sure there's other viable combos like Giga said.
It'll take a little bit of time before your AOE kicks in but when it does it REALLY does, and you start blowing up hordes of enemies. Until then just focus on upping your attack speed and you'll still dominate (at least that's how I played it).

I didn't use much of the Nature tree with my Hunter. I only really used it for the Total Speed buff (Heart of Oak). While this was great for increasing attack and running speed, it was possibly a waste of a talent choice. You could go for the pets, but if you do I'd advise picking it early and levellig it up as you go. I tried picking it up at a higher level (when I'd maxed out all my bow-related skills) and the pets just died too quickly and weren't useful enough.
Going for the Rogue tree will allow you to poison your bow shots and do a lot more damage, and possibly use the poison bombs, but again, I don't think there's that much to offer in the tree. If you're going for Bow and Arrows, then most of your points should be going into the Hunter tree.

Since it is possible to play online with your singleplayer character, I am wondering if we could set up some kind of a trade ring.
You guys just mention the set you are looking for if anybody locates it, he (or she) could message you to arrange a time to log on. Since the game is on Steam, it could be easier to arrange.
If that works out, I'd be happy to give Titan Quest another chance. As it is now, I've given up on the game.

I planned to keep playing it here in Beijing but unfortunately found that the save games don't transfer so simply.
I copied my steam directory over to the laptop I brought here but when I booted it up my characters weren't there. That works for most games, but I've found I don't have my files for TQ, Longest Journey and World of Goo.
Does anyone know where the save files are stored/how to transfer them?
If so I'll connect to my Australian PC and get them and be up for playing again/trading here.
I have a few low/mid level set piece items that I kept saving in case I ever made a char that would use them but I never did.
I'm home in about 3 weeks though anyway and might start playing again then.

Most games these days store your saves and config files etc either in My Documents or AppData. It's to separate user content from program data, and overcome and permissions issues on OSs like Vista, which by default doesn't like you writing files into /Program Files/ without permission.
It's the same reason why (sane people) don't store their Word documents in the same directory as winword.exe.
It can be a little more inconvenient in some cases (ala copying your steam folder, then also having to copy each individual game save folder) but it makes some logical sense.

Fair enough. I've just recently taken to running all my games off an external HDD as I'm constantly going back and forth between multiple laptops and desktops all of which I may want to play any of my games on. It's been working great so far except for the lack of saves for several games. It's especially useful as my main gaming laptop right now is borrowed and I don't want to clog it up with random crap, and this way I don't even have to install STEAM on it let alone all the game files.

If you have the expansion, you get a storage NPC who has a stash for items on your own character and a stash that is shared between all characters, making it easy to pass a cool item you find on one character to another character that might find it more useful.

There's a program you can get, TQVault I think it's called, that will let you export items to a sort of... well, vault (basically saves them as item files), and you can organize them by type, enchantment level, etc. An easy way to swap items between characters, and store things like set items without having to make mule characters. You could also use it to duplicate items, but you don't have to.
As far as character device and "blowing things up", the best melee AoE you'll get is probably Warfare/Dream, going with the dual wield skills and onslaught, and the skill Lon Lon mentioned from Dream along with some of it's better passives. For pure effectiveness, nothing beats Warfare/Defense (swapping out dual wield for the shield skills in defense). It's gear dependent like all physical damage builds, but it's literally the best overall class in the game. Excellent offense and defense, as would be assumed from the two trees.
If you search for it, there's an earlier thread about the game where Secret wrote a bunch of character advice.

There's a difference between them though. The loot in Hack-n-Slash games drops at a much more frequent rate, and you can solo nearly every part of the game with most character's.
In MMO's the combat is different, and a lot slower, you cannot solo the game to get awesome gear, leveling is much slower if your just starting out and have no idea where to quest or what quests to do. So getting the really good gear means partying up with a raid or party who may also want the gear your after.
If you love getting awesome loot in TQ and that's what your addicted too, I don't think that instantly means you would be addicted to WoW if you played it. That feeling you get when you see an Epic piece of loot drop to the ground in TQ or D2, that feeling never happened for me in WoW, I was mesmerized by every other part of the game instead.

I wonder if the fire elemental will give the kick I really need, blowing stuff up like the pent up pressure I have inside my head.

Stick with it.
Act 1 may be a little rough but by halfway through Act 2 I had arrows that proc to pass through and hit other mobs, and also proc to explode into shrapnel. It really speeds up at that point.
Also Act 1 and 5 are the longest acts, the others are very short in comparison.
If you end up getting the expansion there's an NPC you can pay to reset your skills, too, so you can use that and shoot straight up the the skill tree to focus on the skills you want if you ended up putting in any other filler skills that you're finding less useful currently.

The hunter becomes awesome later, once you have piercing and the exploding arrow. You can fire into a crowd and everything dies.
If you want something that looks awesome near the beginning, I started a warrior that was launching things high into the air when they were killed. An awesome looking affect.

i didnt like tq because of the skill tree system, i dont like rpgs that dont have archetypes in them that are visually distinct. I also wasnt a big fan of the art style of titan quest, i understand they were going for greek mythology style but to me all the gear really looked the same, the weapons werent all that interesting and lack of 2h axes or hammers was kinda lame.
To sum it up, the game's visual style is simply bland and generic. While the polygon count was impressive for its time, Titan Quest looks utterly forgettable. This does not necessarily have anything to do with the setting as God of War's vision of ancient Greece, as exaggerated as it is, is actually vibrant and distinctive in comparison. This was and remains to be my main problem with Titan Quest.

All this Titan Quest talk led me into impulse buying the thing on Steam. I'm playing a tree-hugger and enjoying it quite a bit. Just got started (only level 4), but I'm liking this tree. The puppy-dog is a great force-multiplier, and healing spells make me a happy gamer.
Not that I didn't already have a backlog a mile and a half long.
Thanks Johan...
Thanks a bunch. :p

Quick note: While you are given the option to choose a second mastery at level 8 (IIRC), you don't necessarily have to take it then. Maybe hold off for a while until you know exactly how you want to play. For example, my Archer character didn't pick a second mastery until quite a high level and I'd already maxed out most of the Hunter tree.

This hobby of ours can be a real sinkhole, can't it? Like a furnace, and we're shoveling in money and time. :)

This is a terrific point. I wish I had held off for a while longer, but I did okay in my choice (Warfare/Defense). I'm destroying mobs pretty readily at this point (level 43, half-way through on epic). I'm thinking of doing a Dream/Spirit run in the future.
What's the level cap in this game with the IT expansion?

75, according to Wikipedia. Good luck getting near that though. It takes forever to level up once you in the 50s and above, say.

Bah! If it wasn't this we'd all be playing golf, or something equally reprehensible. :D

Hey, anyone who is playing, look for me on Steam. I'd be up for some impromptu co-op.

Earth/Dream was kind of fun, my entire offense was based on letting the Nightmare and Earth Elemental absorb aggro whilst I hurt things.

Reading this thread has me itching to play the game. I bought it on Steam a while back but haven't installed it yet.
I must resist and focus on Oblivion!

It has been a while but quick "legit" leveling can be done by entering the pyramid in act 2 where you must defeat ghost summoners to activate statues to get through a door. I found that the ghosts never stop spawning and still grant experience so a few pieces of tape or heavy objects to keep you constantly attacking work wonders. This all reliant on the ability to actually kill the ghosts rather quickly, and to stand behind a statue so that they come to you but with the right setup/items you can get a good boost in levels to make some of the difficult content that much easier.

Been playing this a little bit over the last week. I'm having more fun than I did the first time around but holy LOOT fest. It's got a point now where I will only pick up Blues, I'm sure there is lot of upgrades I'm missing out on but I've had enough of filling my bags while wasting time in the process.

The trick is to learn what the good modifiers are on the greens, since you can read titles without picking them up (thanks to not having to identify stuff, an awesome change from diablo). That way when you see something good, you know to pick it up, and when you see something shitty, you just don't bother.

I just hit level 8 with my Tree-Hugger, and I'm going to wait a while before I make the leap. I was thinking going with the Earth/Warrior thing...but the double trouble pet-fest would be cool too.
My puppeh, I loves him. Wish he was a little better at grabbing aggro, but I love having the force multiplier of a good pet.

If you want a tanking pet choose fire and drop points into the core dweller, nothing compliments puppehs like a lumbering giant made of magma. Also a note, in later difficulties special monsters can 1-shot even the toughest core dweller so you may want to think of getting some combat abilities. Spirit has the always cheap "ternion attack" and the lich, who with all his synergies can cause massive disable to enemies allowing your puppehs to do better.

This game seems to go on Forever... how many regions are after Egypt?

Isn't Egypt the second?
There's Greece, Egypt, Babylon, Far East, IIRC. And whatever for the Immortal Throne expansion.

Sorry, saw this a little late.
There are 4 acts in total, 3 from the original and 1 from the expansion.
Act 1: Greece
Act 2: Egypt
Act 3: Asia (A fair trip from Babylon, through to China)
Act 4: Rhodes through to Hades.
Act 3 is my personal favourite. The variety of locations and spectacular level design in places make it a lot more interesting that the others IMHO, although I'm not so keen on Babylon at the beginning.
