Unfortunately not. THIAF is going to re-invent the stealth genre, starting with spellings. :\

That cannot be real!
IF it is: Come on, are they trying to kill all enthusiasm for the game as soon as it is announced? Plus, that is Thiaf.

Hmm. That even makes "DRIV3R" look not quite so silly...

They couldn't have at least put a couple more lines on that 4 to make the back an E...

Well that's moronic. Minimum. Minimum I'm surprised that not one person there knew how leetspeak worked.
3 = E
4 = A
And that's not even addressing the whole "leetspeak is actually stupid" part.
I hate marketing departments.

If they are going to fuck up leet-speak (I didn't know it was possible until now...), atleast make the 4 an H, as a sloppily written 4 can look like an H.
Or they could call it, I dunno, THIEF 4!

Bastardized l33t speak for a game title does not improve my desire for this game.

At least it's only appearing in the temporary logo. The press release and all other materials refer to it as 'Thief 4'. I doubt it'll be an issue.

GigaFuzz is correct.
It's just a working title for now. As you can see, we are using www.thief4.com and the name of this forum is Thief 4 not THI4F. So don't worry!

I am glad this looks to be wrong. I was worried that it was true because of Left 4 Dead's success.

I couldn't remember how to spell his name, and its been years since I played it. I took an educated guess.... and I went to a state school system damnit! :D

Meh. I'm not that offended by the 4. It's marketing...I think we've seen worse. I'm looking forward to the game...4 or no 4 :)

I don't think anyone can pull of a Thief game that was as good as 1,2 or even 3.
I wish someone would just look at Shalebridge Cradle, and build upon that design philosophy.

Here's a game that came out in the UK:

And here's the US version of that same game, released a year later:

Apparently, marketing thinks that we in the US love replacing letters with numbers. Hell, we have a show called "Numb3rs" in primetime.

This is pretty sad. A Thief sequel/reboot wouldn't have been successful even if it had a legitimate title, but it's unwise to alienate the main fanbase like this...

I have little hope for this game. I want it to be good, but my instincts tell me otherwise. :/

If a stupid naming convention on the cover is enough to drive you away, well, sayonara. I don't have a problem with this stupidity if the game ends up being good... I'll save my rage for the game itself if it doesn't live up to my admittedly high expectations.
Maybe this is their way of getting rid of all of the bad design decisions by putting them on the box.

You know, 95% of all optimists suffer from chronic depression. :D
Because they get disappointed more often.
I don't know of any studio in existence today that can pull off a game like Thief. A single jump in a console generation rendered even its original creators incompetent (Shalebridge Cradle being an exception).
Yes but now Eidos can borrow elements from the other stealth games to bolster Thief. Things like an accurate light/sound system (which Thief 3 seriously fucked up) and the ability to use the environment to kill/stun enemies (ala Blood Money) More games need that system to be honest.
Most of all though, I want it to not be a buggy, broken mess of a game like Thief 3 is on the PC. The Steam version simply will not let you out of the tutorial (a guy you're meant to stun does not fall down)

I think I've said this before when the topic of Thief 4 came up, but as long as I can go through the whole game using just my water and moss arrows and kosh people on the noggin with my blackjack while listening to inane conversations and watching those gorgeous 2D cinematics... well.. I'm happy.
Just don't give us a stupid hub level (a la The City in Thief 3) and don't break up the levels into chunks (again, a la Thief 3).
If they can deliver on those fronts and don't do anything incredibly dumb with the story, I'll be happy. It might not be up to par with the older titles, but I will be willing to cut it a lot of slack in some areas if they can nail down those particulars.

The ability to read Greek seems to be vanishing (confined to mathematicians and linguists), making shit like this all too common:

I'm sure that Grssk show is totally awesome.*Groan*

That image makes me want to punch a wall.
They also don't seem to understand capitalisation. So I'm not too surprised about the greek thing.

http://i41.tinypic.com/2wg5h10.jpgI see what they did there. They used sigmas for the letter 'E' because they look similar. And "it's a rush" because when you check out potential fraternities to make a decision it's called "rush".
Man, those marketing folks sure are a clever bunch.
