Are you a big fan of digital distribution? Well, then, this is the news for you. According to CVG (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=199015), SCEJ has announced that all future Sony published PSP games released in Japan will have a simultaneous release via the PSN.

This is set to start on October 15th, coinciding with the new PlayStation Store direct access for the PSP. It's good to see they're giving people options, I know I don't want to see the disc based games go away anytime soon.

There have been full games downloadable for the PSP in the US for quite a while now (over 35 now), but most of them have been older games that have gone through their retail cycle already. It'll be interesting to see if this comes to the US, since I believe we have bigger retail resistance to deal with here.

This is a move the PSP has needed to make for a while, and I applaud Sony for taking this step.

It's cool for those that like downloading all of their media but I will still be picking up the UMD versions. Unless they start offering a discount on download versions I don't have a compelling reason to not pick up the physical media.

Another story that could/should be moved to news. Again, just saying......

Compelling reason? What about not having to leave your house?

Not compelling enough?

Being able to avoid people and smelly sales associates?

Still not compelling enough?

How about removing the chance of getting something that may have been stored in an EB Games/Gamestop "washroom storage" facility?

Case closed! :p

I do love the accessibility of downloaded games, but it is nice to have the option to trade them with friends and/or trade them in when you tire of them, so I too do prefer the hard medium.

Now give me a PSP emulator on the PS3, and we'll be in business. Don't like playing console-style games on a little screen that hurts my hands.

Should have been done. DSi might get that part right as well but still, it's too late. Ok it's never to late if nobody doing it better than them but still.

What Nintendo has to do is a lot of catching up. They have not managed their existing store very well. Sony, rather quickly, has managed to have their console store get very speedy updates, and new games on a solid clip, almost each week. The classics seem to have dried up on the Playstation, though. I hope the PSP3 will revitalize that, I never owned a PS1 or 2 and hope to go through some back log.

What will be the DSi downfall, in light of the PSP3 is if Nintendo fails to ship it with a storage medium. You have 4 gigs on the PSP now. If Nintendo does not give you the space to download games, then it may never take off.

Running games off of the mem stick is nice. Fast loads and less battery hit. Should have done it from the beginning that way. UMD's are a pain in the ass, they are too big for a small gaming system.

I know. Imagine how small the psp would have been with out UMD.

The sound of the UMD is so loud that I can't play it without waking up my wife, so I mostly use the psp for whatever I have on the mem card, even the old PS1 stuff.

I think this is a good move, but I also think they should kick the release of the PS1 games into high gear. They have released about 25 of the what 5-6 Thousand PS1 games. I'm not sure why they have been releasing these things at such a slow trickle, but it is pretty pathetic. They should open the floodgates to their library.

You didn't source it!

What I want is for all further PSP games that have a multiplayer component to have internet online multiplayer, esp. if it's a game with the words Monster or Hunter in the title...

Stupid ad hoc.

Not much smaller. Would you make the screen smaller? Take much off the sides and you can't use the buttons/dpad/nub comfortably.

The link is in the first line, from CVG. :)

I wholeheartedly agree. There are so many PSP games that could've extended their lives exponentially (at least, for me) if they offered infrastructure as well as ad-hoc.

When you say internet do you mean like EVDO? Or do you mean WiFi access?

He means playing over infrastructure network vs. ad-hoc (or like my brother calls it, "in-room"). So few games have utilized infrastructure that it's pretty sad.

I thought you can do online now with the PS3. Seemed more like a tunneling setup without all the work.

No, but it could be thinner. All though then it would probably be to fragile. <shrug>

Seriously, the Slim and Lite already feels too fragile. I can't imagine how much worse it'd be if it were even SMALLER.

It would probably be a calm shell design, but it probably be to close to the DS.

Yeah, Xerxes was mentioning something about being able to essentially tunnel through the PS3 out into the internet with the PSP, but has anyone actually used this? If it works, it would be a great boon for the games like Monster Hunter.

That's one of the new features they announced at TGS, I'd guess it would be in the next firmware updates for both systems. I know at least for me it means that I'm buying Monster Hunter Freedom Unite when that hits in the next couple of months.

I didn't realize that they were making another MHF game. I know they had that expansion/revamp of MHF2 that came out in Japan a little while ago... that's not the same thing, is it?

I'd only been hearing about MH3 on the Wii lately, nothing about the PSP versions. I want a PS3 version!

I'd still rather they just build in native internet support so I don't have to be within range of my PS3's wimpy WiFi transmitter. I tried doing remote play with it in my bedroom and it's just too weak a signal compared to the router. Plus I don't cart my PS3 around with me when I visit the inlaws.

Yeah, it's a localization of the MH game that came in Japan earlier this year. Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G something or other. I think it's an expanded version of MHP2, but I'm not completely sure. All I know is I'm glad I'll be able to play it online, since I don't really know anyone to play it w/locally. They'd better have voice chat through the PS3, or else I can't see it working.

Spigot
10-12-2008, 03:51 PM
Yeah. MHP2ndG was essentially an expanded version of the original MHP2. Given how much I adored MHF2 (and that was without doing any multiplayer hunts), I'd love to get my hands on this and be able to play it online.

Though now that you mention voice, maybe that's why they never included online play... though I'm pretty sure there was some kind of rudimentary communication set-up in MHF2... It's been a while though, so I forget.

Well, you can have voice chat in online PSP games, the SOCOM games have it, as did Killzone. You just need the headset.

Does it work with the upcoming SOCOM Bluetooth headset too, or only wired headsets?

I wouldn't think so, since the PSP doesn't have Bluetooth. It would be a wired headset, or none at all with the new PSP 3000 models with the built in Mic.

Smack me with a big-ol DUR stick! Someone in another thread mentioned it and I hadn't heard anything... so here I am after playing a game of 'Telephone' (I heard that Suzie said that Joey said...)
