The Pirate Party has tripled its ranks in only three weeks up to 44,000 members, and it’s on course to become the second largest political part in the country. TorrentFreak caught up with party leader Rick Falkvinge to congratulate him on this unprecedented achievement, and we used the opportunity to find out more about his future plans. First off, we asked him if the recent surge in members can be solely attributed to the outcome of the Pirate Bay trial.

You know theres something wrong with your government when 44,000 people is "on course to become the second largest political party." Their population is just over 9 million people. Which means under 0.5% of the population being in a party is closing in on the 2nd biggest party? So currently the second largest party is what? A whopping 1%?

What are the membership* numbers by percentage of population of the largest parties in USA or UK?

Assuming a US population of about 300 million...
Democratic: 72 million (2004) ~ 24% of total population
Republican: 55 million (2004) ~ 18.3% of total population
Constitution Party: 366,937 (2006) ~ 0.12% of total population

In Sweden, people in general are not registered members of the party they vote for, and that has nothing to do with anything being wrong with the government.

Did they steal their political ideas, or just infringe upon copyright to get them?

It's like Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Striking it down has only made it stronger.
