[CONTEST] Space Invaders Extreme

Tomorrow on Xbox Live Arcade comes Space Invaders Extreme (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/s/spaceinvadersxboxlivearcade/default.htm). You could say it's "Space Invaders Week" here at the CoG network. There's an interview over at Co-Optimus (http://www.co-optimus.com/interview/193/page/1/Space_Invaders_Extreme_Co-Op_Interview.html) with the senior artist of the game, In-Game Chat (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/forumdisplay.php?f=16) will also be conducting an interview with folks involved with the game later this week and here at the Colony...well, we've got a contest for you.

Up for grabs in the contest is a limited edition print that Backbone Entertainment created, and individually *hand-signed* by Tomohiro Nishikado - the creator of the ORIGINAL 1978 Space Invaders. Only 180 of these prints were created and you have a chance to win one of them.

Winning is pretty easy. No judging. No luck of the draw. All you have to do is obtain the high score in the single player arcade mode (with default options including only 3 lives) of Space Invaders Extreme on XBLA among everyone who enters by the end of the contest next Tuesday (5/12/09) at 11:59pm Eastern time. To enter your score, just take a screenshot of your ranking. It must be very clear what your gamertag is, the score, and the rank position. Then send it to contests@colonyofgamers.com with "SIX SCORE" as the subject line and include your name, address, and phone number along with your username on CoG as this contest is only open to members of the Colony*. Also, you can only enter ONE time. So it would probably be best to wait until the last minute to send in your entry. However, in the event of a tie (if at all possible), whoever sent in their entry first will win.

There may be a way to change it in options, but you start out with 3 and yes, everything should be set to default when entering. Also, the leaderboards show the lives along with the high score, so everything should be on the up and up here.

Just remember that continuing means your score won't get posted to the leaderboards. Still, it's good for practicing the tougher levels. The base point values are the same for all stages, whether they are A B C or D versions, however the fevers last longer on harder difficulties and the stages often have more things to kill, thus making them have higher point potential.

Well, if he didn't take photo evidence then that score doesn't stand. It all depends on the one score you take a picture for. Granted, you can have a bunch of them and send in your best one, but if you didn't think of it when you got your best score you're screwed.

Yeah... my heart jumped into my throat for a second. I'm actually glad my score wasn't number one by the end of it all because my mail was rejected by the CoG server... and the mailer daemon didn't notify me until the next day. Not sure why, but it could've been the 3MB photo size (damn SLR and me not reducing it from 10MP). If I was ahead, and blew it because of something like that, despite sending the image in before the deadline, I would curl up and die.

Heh, nice try, but I was pretty confident that I had it. Last time I checked, I was still #4, and the three guys above me were Japanese, and not very likely to read CoG.

I'm a big fan of all these old school games where the focus is on high scores. Pac-Man C.E. and Geometry Wars 2 are still great, but Space Invaders has some really cool ideas, and I don't know if I would have taken the time to appreciate them if it wasn't for the contest.

Thanks also to everyone else who participated, I can't believe how high everyone placed on the leaderboard. I doubt any of us would have been as successful if the race wasn't so close. I know I that I wouldn't gotten the scores I did if it wasn't for you guys pushing me.
