:) I had the same reaction after I found out Lenore (the momma cat) had her litter and I saw this picture. Even more squee-worthy in person. My husband had never seen a baby kitten in person before, and was amazed at how flat their faces tend to be that young. He also couldn't get over how they were commando crawling all over the place.

Gah, sooorrryyyy all, for some reason I missed the email update on this thread and didn't realise everyone was asking and worrying. SilentScreams chased me down on steam the other night.

The cat is doing very well. I got to a vet who gave a shot + antibiotics and eye drops which cleared up the main eye/nose problems after a week.

I am pretty sure it's a girl, but I don't want to name her because unfortunately I can't keep her. My girlfriend got really paranoid that if it was found I was hiding the cat I could get kicked out of my apartment and also have job/contract troubles (foreigners have some pretty silly/strict regulations on occasion here) so we went to the landlord and told him I had the cat and asked if I could keep it because it was sick. He said no way, but I could have 2 or 3 days to nurse her back to health. It's been 2 weeks now and she's doing very well but I have had zero luck in finding an owner so she's still at my house. Landlord hasn't been by yet but don't know what will happen if he does come for a visit. I am asking all my friends and colleagues, and my girlfriend almost found her a home last week but when they heard she was black they changed their minds... Sorry still no pics but I should have some this weekend as I plan to take a bunch and put a poster up at the vet.

For the first week she was still very sedate and spent most of her time just sitting in the box/bed I made for her. After a couple days she seemed to "get" the litter tray so I moved her into the kitchen instead of the bath so she had more room to run around. A few days later again, she was getting some confidence moving around and now 2 weeks later she's a terror. She's usually just chilling around the kitchen somewhere when I get home but I now open up the living room door and let her run between those rooms and she goes a bit nuts.

She loves chasing things but has also become a little less cuddly because she also likes to swat at/bite my hand. I'm not sure the best way to discourage that, or if it's maybe bad to discourage it and she needs that kind of play. It usually doesn't hurt, the bite especially is mostly just putting her teeth "on" my hand/finger, there's no power there, so I don't mind her doing it so much now but if that's going to become a forceful chew later on I definitely want to discourage it.

She has also somewhat unlearnt the litter tray, she still uses it but now she rolls all around in it like crazy and digs/kicks the stuff all over the kitchen. Is there any way to discourage that or again it's just something that they will want/need to do? Every day when I get home I have to sweep the whole kitchen.

Also, I'm not sure how I should be feeding her. Her tummy was a bit distended and bulbous right from day one which was apparently due to malnutrition, and I want to be careful not to overfeed her. The first few days, she couldn't finish half a sachet of wet food for a meal, but now she eats that portion super quick and seems to want more right away/an hour or two later. I'm still only giving her that half portion (twice a day, so one sachet a day) plus some dry biscuits but wonder if I need to be giving her more or she's just gonna complain that she's hungry no matter what and that's normal.

She's also powering through the kitten milk; it used to take 3 or 4 days to finish a little carton, but now she does 1 in a day/day and a half. Can I just give her normal people milk? They ran out of kitten milk at the store closest to me and 200mL of it costs like double the price of 1L people milk.

Everything had been going real well (other than the needing to get rid of her/no owner situation) and she is overall very loving and follows me around while I'm at home and loves to just curl up on my lap/chest and sleep, purring happily while I watch movies or play games, but unfortunately last night I noticed some little bugs crawling on her belly... My first assumption would have been fleas, but I thought they were tiny black balls and this thing was big (garden ant sized), brown and kinda oval/oblong shaped. My idea of fleas DOES just come from cartoons though, and looking it up online I read about all the gross baby flea eggs which is probably the black dirt I have been occasionally dusting off the kitten assuming it was just stubborn dirt from being a stray... So that black stuff is now all over my clothes/carpet/house.

The bugs disappear real quick when I spot them and the cat thinks I'm trying to play when I grab at them so starts pawing me and makes it impossible to grab them. I caught ONE and while trying to get a closer look it jumped off my hand and seemed to fly away. Do fleas fly, or could it be something else?

The cat doesn't seem at all bothered by them, and doesn't seem to me to be particularly scratching/itching a lot and doesn't have any bad looking patches of skin, but having read up on them today online I now feel itchy all over. I really hope that is just paranoia (I wasn't itchy before reading anything this morning), but that black dust is definitely ALL over my apartment now.

What is the best way to deal with all this? Should I take her to the vet or are there good off the shelf solutions? Is my apartment now doomed as a flea (or other bug) pit or is there a safe way I can get rid of all this crap?

Also, I assume she's had fleas for two weeks and I haven't noticed, and I haven't been itching in all that time despite the very close contact I've had with her; am I just lucky and I should avoid being too close with her again until this is solved or do cat fleas not transfer to people so much or what?

Agreed with goodwin on the biting issue. When kittens roughhouse with each other they yelp when the other kitten bites/scratches too hard, and this is how they learn their limits. Emulate this as best you can.

As for the fleas, which it does sound like the kitten has, there are a number of remedies, though I don't know which one to recommend. It's an annoying problem if left alone for too long, as they'll start coming after you soon enough. Particularly your feet/legs while you're sitting around. They don't fly, but they jump so fast and so far it might look like that.

You can get special de-flea for kittens, but even then they need to be 6-8 weeks old. I remember because I rescued my kitten when she was 5 weeks and she had fleas, so we had to wait a week before we could flea her, then two weeks longer before we could worm her. Eugh.

Yep ... getting the apartment infested with fleas will not make the landlord happy. So its important to keep the fleas under control. Also, might be why the cat is rolling in the cat litter so maybe some flea powder might be inorder.

Thanks all for the advice.

I got a flea brush and some kind of liquid to put on her back which the store owner seemed to think she was old enough for.

Before I put it on I brushed like 8 fleas out of her, and then the next day I brushed maybe 5 more dead ones out.

I spent all weekend cleaning the damn apartment, washing/vacuuming everything the cat had been near, and then threw out the vacuum bag. I also threw out the box she had been living in and bought her a little soft cat den thingy which she was scared of at first but now seems to love. I really hope I stopped them in time, and I haven't seen any fleas/flea dust since, but they're obviously not the easiest things to spot... Fingers crossed.

That's a good point that maybe they were responsible for her rolling around in the kitty litter, so hopefully that might stop soon.

Also made some progress with an owner; someone a few towns over is interested, although she is also not allowed pets. She plans to hide her from the landlord until she leaves in March, when she will take the cat back to America with her, which is the main thing I was looking for (a couple of people wanted to take her just for a fun "Japan pet" and then ditch her when they left...).

She is going to come visit her next week some time and hopefully take her a few days after if all goes well.

Any advice on the food thing? How do I know how much I should feed her? She complains a lot especially in the mornings now, but certainly doesn't seem hungry while I am home throughout the day when I still feed her those half portions.

Also, the whole town still seems to be sold out of kitten milk, but I found some in powdered form; is it ok to make a big batch of that and keep it in the fridge? Is it bad to feed cats cold milk? I read something about that but wasn't sure if it was just tiny kittens.

My cat really likes warmed cat milk. She goes mental for it, to the point where she Gets little drops over her face and the floor in front of her bowl. I put it in the microwave for 30 seconds and mix it with my finger to make sure it's not too hot, and she loves it. You should be alright mixing a big batch and leaving it. Just shake it well before you put it down, and make sure it's at room temperature at least. Of course, you could warm it a little first in the microwave, just make sure you mix it well if you've left it a while. :)

Cats are usually pretty good about only eating what they need and no more, but I'm not sure when it comes to really young kittens. You may want to ask the vet if it's okay to leave out some dry kitten food or something for her to snack on while you're gone.

You should see how excited my cat gets in the morning when my wife lets him come climb into bed with me. My cats both have regular sleeping arrangements. Frankie sleeps on my window sill in the gap between my PC tower and the window. There's also a radiator right underneath the window. I put a cat bed/blanket thing there for him and he loves it. A nice warm nook to sleep in. It definitely makes him happy.

Holly sleeps under my bed. There's an old box under there from when I got my last monitor delivered and she's shredded it and made her own bed. It doesn't look comfy, but she goes there every night so it must be.

A couple days ago I was laying on my bed with my laptop, which I control with a thumb style logitech trackball. I was just laying there surfing around when my cat comes over and lays right on my hand, which is over the trackball. I just kept using it, which meant my thumb and fingers were constantly shifting around, throwing her off balance, but she just kept lying there like it was totally normal.
