I would have preferred to have gotten an expansion that let you swim back to earth as MC, but this will be cool if all of the other marines bad mouth the Chief the whole time.

I'm glad it's a full game. I sold Halo 3 a while back and I was not looking forward to having to re-purchase it to play some DLC. As for the issue of whether or not it will be good without MC, we'll see. The MC/Cortana dynamic really made the first game for me, but I think it was really lacking in the last 2. If Halo 3 can get by on Gameplay, I think this could possibly too.
It seems like this game could definitely bring a lot of the Earth bound urban combat that people were hoping for in H2 and never really got.

I'm all over it. It's such a great universe to set stuff in. I'll admit, I've only ever completed Halo 1, but I love tactical games. If these are more tactical, less run and gun, in a sci-fi environment...I'll eat it up.

I wouldn't mind if they added some stealth elements to it... or cover system... and tactics... as Marines can't jump 12 feet into the air and get headshots with a sniper rifle.

cover systems...
I don't need to hit a button to fucking hide behind a piece of the environment that stops bullets...I can just stand / crouch behind it, as I have in countless games before.
A "cover system" is just a glorified lean function in the third person.

Blind-fire... and it's no fun staring at the shitty texture of the wall. It also does not look close to realistic. A good cover system adds to a game, such as Gears of War and Rainbow Six: Vegas.

Halo can work without the Chief as long as the game is good.

I want to see some gameplay footage before passing judgment. Suffice to say that I won't find it believable that a normal marine could do most of the things that Master Chief did in the previous three games, because the story of the games have made it very clear that he is basically a one-man army. There would certainly have to be some major changes to the gameplay for me to accept it as a solid addition to the Halo franchise.

More implied than stated. The Superintendent AI watches the pod crash, gets annoyed when the feed is cut off by ONI then when the ODST comes out into the street, the huge sign is telling him to keep right when the brutes are moving off to the left.

Well, perhaps they will make the campaign slower paced and more tactical if you don't have a shield and a super jump (you shouldn't if your not a spartan). On the multiplayer side, there are six new maps and if they change the campaign, then you can bet that there will probably be a playlist or two that play similarly.

One of the things that I've always thought about Halo was that the games are much more tactical than they appear on the surface and than people give them credit for, especially in the more open areas of the games. I'm really interested to see Bungie embrace their tactical side some more.

A good cover system adds to a game, such as Gears of War and Rainbow Six: Vegas.
Don't forget Uncharted! So it ripped off Gears, but I do like how they gave the character many different "I'm in cover" poses. It made it look a lot more natrual when he was in hiding. It's one of those tiny little subtle touches that 80% of the people that played the game probably didn't even notice, but when you do notice it (or Game Informer has a full page spread of all the different poses), you think "that's really cool."

Any game can be tactical. If you put thought into your moves in Halo, you receive a more tactical experience. If you run and gun, you get a more action-focused experience. Both of those strategies highlight two valid ways to play the game.

Very true. I happen to play a lot better when I think about what I'm doing though.
Also on 1up, it says the Mythic map pack will be included in the game next fall, but you can download it in early 2009. Halo 3 Recon will also have its own achievements worth 1000 points. That means Halo 3 will have 2750 total achievement points :D

Will this be priced as a full game or as an expansion? I understand that the 'Halo 3' text in the title is an obvious capitalization on the franchise and all but it is both confusing and annoying. Hopefully the game will be worth playing: Halo without Master Chief could actually be an engaging single-player experience if Bungie does it right. A new, more vulnerable character, an urban environment and an emphasis on stealth could redeem the franchise in my eyes. It is not even arguable that the single-player campaign was the weakest element of the Halo 3 package.
Also, hopefully this is a good enough excuse to bring back Mountain Dew: Gamer Fuel. I love that stuff.

I think the change of the title character, even if it effects the gameplay in some minor way, is largely insubstantial to me.
What I want to know is whether or not they have new GAMEPLAY ideas and new level design with unique scenarios. The Halo trilogy was very solid technically, but had minimal gameplay evolution. I couldn't believe when Halo 3 ended the SAME way as Halo 1 and the only new idea in the entire game was the fighting the Scarabs. They need more stuff like that--levels that introduce new gameplay concepts.

First let me say that I am sold. I as much a Halo fan as anybody here, even Wolvie.
Now, first of all the ODST better not automatically heal like the MC or every game that copied Halo (see call of Duties,Rainbow 6 Vegas,Gears and every first person shooter afterwards). He better find medics or heal packs or something!
I'd like to still see melee but maybe just to stun your opponent..
Could we be looking at a game that might play more like Rainbow 6 (the original PC versions not the arcadey console versions we know play)
Either way I have complete faith in Bungie... oh and the music on the trailer was THE SAUCE!
As long as there is more to this than simply Halo. . . but no regenerating shield, I think it could be great.

Most importantly, GamerFuel was absolute shit-in-a-can. They gave it away at my local GameStop for the midnight launch of Halo3, and it was universally hate in my section of the line.
Second, this is exactly what I wanted. A chance to get away from the SPARTAN storyline and expand on the lore of your created universe. If you have read the books, you know there is a whole lot that is never touched in the campaigns. The Marathon series proves that Bungie knows how to blend lore and gameplay; those games added a lot with their terminals and "rampant AI" stories. The HALO games seem so bland in comparison, though I can see them trying to reach their roots with the terminals in H3. Still, they need to make drastic changes in the way that they present lore and story to make this a real innovation over the other HALO games. If anyone has the job security to do this sort of thing it is Bungie, so I hope they improve on their past releases.
