So, after about 2 years of development on and off, mostly off, I have finally released my Diablo 2 mod to the world. I'd appreciate it if any of you guys would try it out and let me know what you think. It comes with a script to launch it that will keep your savegames separate, so you shouldnt need to worry about savegame corruption, but please make a backup of your savegames just in case (I cant see how it would interact with them, but you never know).

The mod isnt a total conversion or anything, it just adds a whole bunch of new items and rebalances the game a bit. And extends the maximum character level to 150. I'll quote from the readme to elaborate. Link is at the bottom.

Let me know what you guys think, its not a major mod or anything, should hopefully just make the game a little more fun to play and and some cool new kit for the endgame. I might need to make Hell difficulty a little harder to compensate for some of the kit. Hope some people still have this installed!

This mod was conceived as a way to end the endless runs needed to get good equipment and attain high levels in the original game. I felt that, especially for single player games, it would be nice if a player could finish Hell difficulty at close to the maximum level offered without needing to do endless runs, and also possessing some of the finer equipment. It seemed strange to me, that in order to get to the better equipment, which naturally was greatly needed in Hell, players needed to engage in very repetitive play.

As such, the mod makes it so that players gain levels at an almost constant speed. You should gain an average of 10 levels per act, although players will naturally gain more levels in Act I Normal. Also, the maximum level cap is now 150, and the maximum skill level is now 25. Also, super elite items have been added, which are a class of item above elite items.

Some new monster types and super unique monsters have been added, and the difficulty of Hell has been slightly lowered to make it more accessible. Even so, Hell difficulty is still difficult, and should only be attempted by seasoned adventurers. Many new set and unique items have been added, as well as new runewords and Horadric cube recipes. Most of the runewords are high level runewords, but some are also lower level runewords. Boots, belts and gloves can now be socketed, and thus also have their own runewords. New crafted item recipes have been added, and existing crafted recipes now no longer require specific items – they will work with any item from a particular class, such as helms, weapons or body armor. Tempered items have been enabled – these are intended to be continually improved by the player as he/she gains levels and finds new items to use in improving their tempered item.

Summary of Changes
================================================== ==============

Player/difficulty Changes
• Maximum level cap is now 150
• Maximum skill level is now 25
• Leech, cold and curses are now more effective in Hell difficulty
• No more experience penalty when you die on Nightmare or Hell difficulty.
• Significantly changed experience progression – no experience penalty from
level 70 onwards, higher experience gains in later levels to approximately maintain leveling speed.

Paladin Changes
• Holy Fire ramps up in damage much faster than originally
• Might ramps up in damage by 15% per level, and also adds an increasing chance of crushing blow.
• Sanctuary now adds magic damage to attack, but does less damage versus undead then before (it still knocks back undead and ignores their resistances). Sanctuary also receives a 10% damage synergy from cleansing (up from 7%) and a 5% synergy from Prayer.
• Defiance receives a 15% damage synergy from Might (but not the bonus to crushing blow).

Sorceress
• Inferno receives 12% damage per level from Warmth and Blaze.
• Blaze receives 10% damage per level from Warmth and Inferno.
• Charged Bolt receives synergy bonuses from Chain Lightning and Nova as well as Lightning
• Thunderstorm receives damage synergy bonuses from Static Field and Lightning.
• Nova receives damage synergies from Telekinesis and Static Field.

Barbarian
• Find Potion now adds passive health regeneration.
• Find Item now adds passive magic find.
• Increased speed now also increases attack speed at the same rate.

Item Changes
• Super elite items added – like elite items, only higher level and more powerful.
• 42 new unique items added.
• 13 new sets added (all super elite).
• New runewords added (see below) and ladder only runewords activated.
• New crafted recipes added (see below) and existing recipes changed.
• New tempered item creation and maintenance recipes added.
• Unique, set and rare items drop far more commonly (about 1 unique item per hour of adventuring).
• High level runes drop more commonly, and no longer require a gem when they are upgraded using the Horadric cube.
• Magic prefix and affix pool cleaned up, so you should see better properties on high level items.
• Boots, gloves and belts can now have sockets.
• The player starts with tomes of town portal and identify, which can each hold 100 scrolls, and replacement scrolls cost 1 gold.
• Repair costs for more expensive items has been lowered.

Actually I have the battle chest. Haven't played any of them. Maybe when I start in I'll use your mod from the start.

Man, Ancalagon, you're like one of those dealers who sets up outside an NA meeting.

It sounds like an awesome mod. I wish I had time to play though Diablo II again. They finally fixed it for my MBP.

Yup, aint it cool? I have free WoW discs if you want them. First hit, I mean first week is free.

I've started playing with a Charged Bolt sorceress, and one of the new builds allowed by the mod - a Sanctuary Paladin. He owns undead badly and is pretty good against other creatures due to the magic damage added to his attack. Anti undead aura is a little too big admittedly, next release will decrease the radius a bit.

I think I'm also going to increase the damage ramping and possibly the synergies on Inferno to make it a viable skill. In the unmodded game it does about 200 damage per second at level 20. Even with its synergies maxed, it wont do more than 2000 damage per second. Completely useless.

Good to hear it! Any feedback (fromy anyone) would be welcome.

And I see a kindly mod has moved the thread to the IM Features - I feel so privileged, thank you.

Heads up guys, new version of the mod is available. Download URL is the same as in the first post.

V1.1

Fixed bug that gave monsters in Hell many more hitpoints than they should receive.
Increased to hit rating of monsters in hell but slightly decreased their damage.
Decreased experience given by monsters by about 10% in all 3 difficulties, from monster
level 20 and onwards.
Removed jewels, runes and gems from shops - these dont work in the higher difficulties anyway.
Lowered the maximum player and monster level from 150 to 125. Also lowered some item levels and
level requirements to compensate. End result - more of the better kit will only drop in Hell as
opposed to nightmare difficulty.
Decreased the drop chance of gems slightly, by restoring the amount of junk dropped to its original
value. Decreased the likelihood of higher grades of gems dropping (was previously too high) and
slowed the rate at which the better runes became available (these were becoming available too soon).
Reduced the maximum rune level that the Countess can drop in Normal difficulty to something which the
player should be able to use at that point.
Restored the unique, set and rare drop probabilities for the 5 act end bosses - these were mysteriously
lower than they should be.
Fixed a potentially huge bug with area calculations - I tried to expand some of the overland areas in
nightmare and hell difficulty, but there is more to it than I thought.
Raised the monster density of some low density levels in hell difficulty, such as The Blood Moor and Kurast.
Fixed the display of the barbarian's new passive bonuses from Find Potion and Find Item - these were being
applied but not displayed in the skill information.
Fixed a bug where the magic damage added to attack by the Sanctuary aura wasnt being displayed.

Also adds one or two new runewords.

Nope. You get a final version first. Then I'll DL it. :p

I haven't even installed Diablo yet, just kidding.

Ha ha, there might never be a final version! Theres always more to do.

Its kinda distinctly odd playing your own mod, since I control all the variables of the game. I mean, I can change things so that the best items drop like candy if I wanted. Or that all monsters had 1HP and gave 1million experience. So its kinda weird approaching the game both from the players point of view and the mod point of view.

Come on, install it. Diablo misses you. He's all alone in his Chaos Sanctuary, with no one to beat him up.

Sounds interesting. I'll check it out tonight when I have a bit more time.
