This phone looks good...

The rumors have been around for a while now, but here's the first official announcement: The Samsung i7500 is the first Google Android smartphone manufactured by one of the leading mobile phone manufacturers. That's not really a surprise though, as Samsung has been offering phones based on most platforms out there in the recent years.

The Samsung i7500 (specs (http://www.infosyncworld.com/reviews/cell-phones/compare/?name1=Samsung+I7500)) features a 3.2-inch AMOLED full touchscreen, 7.2Mbps HSDPA, 5.76Mbps HSUPA, and Wi-Fi connectivity, giving users access to Google Mobile services and a desktop-like browsing experience. Along with supporting a 5-megapixel camera with auto focus and Power LED, the Samsung i7500 supports a range of multimedia codec formats (Video: MPEG4, H.263, H.264 and WMV. Audio: MP3, AAC, AAC+, e-AAC+, WMA and Real Audio).

The Samsung i7500 Android smartphone will also ship with a 1500 mAh battery, an internal memory of 8GB and a microSD memory slot supporting up to 32GB cards. Furthermore, the phone supports Bluetooth 2.0 and USB 2.0, and comes with a microUSB port and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The Samsung i7500 offers users access to the full suite of Google services, including Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail, YouTube, Google Calendar, and Google Talk. The integrated GPS receiver enables the use of Google Maps features, such as My Location, Google Latitude, Street View, local search and route description.

The Samsung i7500 will be available in major European countries from June 2009. It supports GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz voice networks, as well as 900/1700/2100 MHz data networks. The 1700 MHz frequency will let T-Mobile USA users buy this phone unlocked and use it on T-Mobile's new 3G network. There's no word about whether T-Mobile USA will pick up and subsidize the Samsung i7500 Android smartphone. It's due out in June. :) I've got an iPhone v1 and will be seriously considering replacing it with this Samsung. I'll have to do a Cupcake vs 3.0 comparison when it comes time. Then again, I see it is a European release... I am hopeful regardless.

Bah, I should have read the preview text, instead of coming in here, hoping for robots.

Here's hoping Android phones eventually land on other carriers. T-mobile is not an option for me at all.

Any reason why? Who do you go with as far as carrier? I've found that Tmo is about the only one in Minnesota with consistent coverage throughout the metro. AT&T, Verizon and Sprint all have some odd holes in areas I frequent (like my home).

The green background was an odd color choice.

While cool looking, I've decided that if I buy any kind of fancy phone like this, it would have to have an actual QWERTY keyboard. None of this typing on a touchscreen nonsense.

Does it support Flash?

I used to think that way, but if the autocorrection is even half as intelligent as the iphone, it really doesn't matter.

It's times like this my current status as student and volunteer shows up its tactical weaknesses.

I might be mistaken, but isn't that ball pretty much in Adobe's court?

The majority of phones based on webOS are to be getting flash v10 'sometime' this year.

OLED screen and capacitive touch. June will be an interesting 4 way fight between the HTC magic, new iphone, Palm Pre and this Samsung.

AT&T, Verizon and Sprint all have some odd holes in areas I frequent (like my home).T-mobile/Sprint/AT&T have lousy coverage in northern MN. I don't think any of them even offer plans for my zipcode. Alltel/Verizon are the only major carriers with good coverage here. (But being in an Alltel divested area, some other carrier is supposed to come along and take over this area from Alltel. Could get stuck with an even smaller regional carrier, who knows.)

I didn't know Verizon had coverage issues in the Cities. Maybe that's changed since the merger with Alltel.

Ug, that phone looks great.

I've been wanting to stay with Verzion due to a great work discount I get but it's getting hard to resist jumping ship.

Sure, Verizon has the Blackberry Storm but I'd rather get an iPhone or an Android phone.

The Storm is far and away the worst phone I've ever had the displeasure of using. I set up all of the Blackberry devices for the users in our office, and simply trying to navigate through the menus is an exercise in frustration. I've talked multiple users into returning the device before it was set up, and a few others returned it after a few days. We only have a couple that actually kept it.

Hell no.

My experience with Samsungs is they are poorly designed pieces of shit.

Do. Not. Want.

I've got a Samsung, its not bad but I hate the predictive text they have. I had Sony Ericssons for years before, their predictive text is far better.

This makes me want a new phone!

Does it have the obligitory button of death all Samsungs have that no matter what you are doing cuts you right back the the main screen?

You know, the physical button below the touch screen that 90% of the time you brush lightly when trying to use the touch pad and wipe out everything you've done?

So, the rumor is that iPhone is coming to Verizon next year.

As for this phone, it is pretty damn cool looking. I DO prefer a keyboard, though.

I'd much rather see a G1 or similar Android phone at Verizon than the iPhone. I hate touch screen only devices and cannot justify their existence when a keyboard/pad is cheaper and easier to use and less prone to errors. Actually, if I could get a 3G Omnia with a keyboard I'd be all over it.

I can't believe i missed this thread. I will be tempted by this, and I'll like it. I heard the G1 was more a google phone than what HTC wanted and the Magic is a bit more open. This sound like it means exchange support. (http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/05/15/exchange-enabled-htc-magic-explained-its-not-a-with-google-p/) I hope they release another one with a keyboard, but I really like the look of this Samsung, and if it works out well enough, the better camera alone is probably worth the price of admission.
