New Premium Theme Options on PlayStation Store (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/10/08/new-premium-theme-options-on-playstation-store/)

The last time I posted it was regarding our special E3 section on the PlayStation Store. This time around I wanted to tell you about a new offering that you’ll see tomorrow. In addition to all the free themes you’ve already been getting and will continue to get on the PlayStation Store now, you’ll have the option to upgrade and purchase premium themes to customize the look of your PS3’s XMB.

Who came up with this great idea? Why on earth are they introducing "premium" themes when everybody and their mom are making great free themes?

Microsoft and mobile providers proved that people will pay for JPEGS. In an industry without much ethic, it was an inevitable option on the Sony platform. Personally I would make my own before ever paying for one.

Yeah, I make an angry face every time I see one of my friends with a new "premium" theme or gamerpic. I've bought one pic pack since launch and that's it.

To be fair, they haven't actually said there'd be a charge for them, though the word premium implies that. Anyone who actually pays for themes/gamerpics anywhere is a complete sucker, though.

So,
purchase
doesn't imply paying?

People actually pay for custom themes on 360? What a rip-off.

Yeah, I'm an idiot, I just re-read that. Screw that. Any sucker who pays for these deserves what they get: paying for nothing.

The themes on X360 looks so terrible with the blades that I can't understand why anyone would want to use themes, free or not.

Thanks TFO! This is the first doomed image I see on COG. Finally, the wait is over...

I have been waiting for an opportune moment.

I think you just volunteered to make a CoG PS3 theme.

I might be tempted by the premium themes if they were somehow dynamic; I like the animating ribbon thing on the plain old PS3 home page, I sort of wish there were a way to use that with a background.

I wouldn't pay more then $.50, though.

I know what you are saying. I'm rocking the Psychonauts theme, even though it is hideous, but only because Psychonauts is that awesome.

I have my Bioshock Theme, there is no need for them to make any more.

Technically this has already happened because Qore includes exclusive themes in each episode.

Luckily I get the episodes free through the Official Playstation Magazine (they're printed on the back page of each issue, but are like a month or two behind) so I never really paid for them.

This is so lame. I was just bragging to my girlfriend about how Sony got this right and Microsoft is out of their fucking mind charging for so many freakin themes and gamerpics. I guess I can't really blame them though, people will buy them, won't they.

I will never ever pay for a theme.

I'll admit, I paid for one theme and one picture pack on XBLM. But I love the PS3's free & easy theme/wallpaper system. I'm using a Valkyria Chronicles theme right now (big surprise there). Three options, bottom of the page (http://valkyria.jp/kabegami.html).

I may be mistaken, but I still think that the Penny Arcade Cardboard Tube Samurai theme looks pretty nice with all of the blades. I also have the Castle Crashers theme, because it's free, but I can't stand how dark it makes the UI and how uninteresting it is to look at. Luckily, like I said, that was a free theme, so I'm not out MS points for downloading it.

So are we going to pull the whole "don't want it, don't pay for it" thing? Really, who cares? I don't play MMOs, and don't really want to, therefore I think it's rediculous to pay a monthly fee on top of purchasing a the game (I don't think that really, but you get my point).

I've bought GamerPics and the occasional theme (the Poker Smash one is by far the best I've seen), and I don't care. Why should you?

You know, I've been thinking about this and it's not really that bad. You can still make your own themes for PS3 so if you find a premium one you like, hell you can make it yourself for free! And the XMB themes can come out looking very nice sometimes, as opposed to how boring and odd the 360 dashboard can look with free themes as someone mentioned. The current Bioshock one is great and the new one in the blog post looks even better (but I prefer the first one's icons). I believe the prices they mentioned for these are relatively cheaper than the 360's as well, right? (thought not by too much). Oh well, if they have a well made Dark Knight, GTA4, MGS4, or LBP premium theme, I'll probably get it XD

I don't have a problem with people buying this stuff. I'm all for choices. As long as I can choose not to be stupid, and to avoid paying for this stuff...then why should I care if others have the option to blow a few bucks on it?

I say go for it. The haters are just jealous they don't have the extra $1.75 (or whatever they go for) to afford one! ;)

I agree. It's not like they've taken away the ability to upload your own background pics on the PS3 anyway.

I couldn't care less about themes. Right now I have a picture of my dog as the wallpaper and it will stay that way forever unless it changes to a different picture of my dog.
