Anybody help?

I have a friends HP laptop that I am trying to fix. The problem is it simply will not auto-update or even manually update. The log usually reports failure code 8000FFFF, which I understand means its broken, nothing more.

I found a few solutions on the net that haven't worked. This thing has been failing getting updates for almost a year.

What I have done:

-Tried installing SP1 with the full downloadable. Starts but eventually errors out with error stating you must reboot before you can install this package. Reboot same thing.
-Run a virus and spyware scan, came up clean
-Downloaded other patch files for manual install they always fail different errors
-Deleted the service pack cache area
-One solution on the net said there was a bad hotfix ending in 777 that could cause the issue. its not present on the machine
-Deleted HKLM\Components /AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving and a couple other keys under components suggested in fixes I found.

Anybody else seen this and gotten it fixed?

Does the "user" doing the install have max permissions?

I haven't run into this issue yet and I've seen 4 computers at work here upgrade to SP1, all different configs :(

Over on Cnet http://forums.cnet.com/5208-12546_102-0.html?forumID=133&threadID=265843&messageID=2594019
1: Open up "Control Panel" and navigate your way to "Programs and Features".

2: Click "View installed updates" on the left hand side.

3: Find the update KB929777 and uninstall it.

4: Attempt to install the update again in Windows Update

5: Once successful, restart your PC.

XP had a similar issue. Windows update will just fuck itself sometimes.

No joy. Tried it already. 777 was never installed. Can't manually install it.

I wasn't personally effected, but I found out about it from www.tweakguides.com.

I suggest trying a repair installation.

Then you back up the files and format.

I ended up backing the data up and doing an HP system restore. Of course HP does not give you an actual Vista CD.

They are supposed to, someone needs to call Customer Support and hound them for one.

they make you burn the CDs or DVDs yourself. I needed to buy dual layer DVDs to do it.
