Yay, my birthday present from my GF came in today, a new wireless router. It's a shiney Asus WL-500W (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833320011&Tpk=wl-500w). Not only is it a nice wireless N router, it has two USB ports on the back. Soon I can have an external hard drive and a printer both attached directly to the network.
Considering I normally share video between three computers in my house, having an external hard drive plugged into the router will make my life a lot easier. The router will even download bit torrent files directly to the external hard drive with no need for a computer to be turned on...

Christ, forgive me for asking this, what does something like this run? Does the software do a decent job for firewall/NAT and such? This thing looks nice.

I'm confused by 'what does this run'. Do you mean software or cost?
The interface isn't the best translation but you can get everything set up just fine. Plus there's detailed instructions on how to set everything up.
Eventually I'll probably throw DD-WRT on there though, once I'm sure I can get the external hard drive working with it.

He wants to know how much scratch he'd have to cough up for a cool piece of kit like that.

Yeah, I got the scratch by clicking his link, blind as I am. I like the external HD feature though, and the printer thing is great as well.

Oh, in that case it's currently on sale for 85 plus there's a 20 dollar rebate. IMO it's one of the best routers in it's price range.

I'm surprised there is a decent N router in that range for that price, with that featureset. Seems almost too nice for the cost.

Well, so far today there hasn't been any issues. Stable connection, much better range. ASUS just doesn't overcharge I suppose :).
I can't speak to how well connecting peripherals to it works yet but from what I've read there's normally no issues.

I need a new (and finally wireless) router. Might have to look for a good Canadian seller if this one, it seems to have lots of nice features.

Holy cow - that seems very very sweet. I sure hope it works with my cannon pxima 750 multifunction printer (scanning may be an issue) - because I was all set to come in and recommend the Linksys WRT54-GL that I was planing on getting (and flashing with DD-WRT) but this is an awesome deal! I may have to pick one up - keep us posted with news on Pros or Cons NoName!
Also - tell your GF she rocks from us on the internet!

I want more info! I have had the worst luck with wireless routers (having tried Linksys, D-Link, and Netgear devices.) They've all given me some kind of trouble.
The linksys has been the most reliable. It's also the oldest and slowest.
How's the ASUS holding up? Any issues with wireless dropping? What about the printer and hard-drive, is that working well?
Keep us posted, I'm really looking for a new router that doesn't suck.
Doesn't look to be available in the UK, which sucks. Hopefully it'll make its way over here, last time we tried using the wireless on our router it didn't want anything to connect to it. I could do with a new one, and printer support would be awesome.
I'd rather get the DGL-4500 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127243) to replace my 4300 if I was to get a new router.

It's held up well so far. I had a bit of the issue with getting wireless G devices connected using WPA, but switching to WPA2 fixed the issue (??).
Actually, the only issue I've had is with my wireless N linksys card which has been giving me nothing but headaches. Every other wireless device has had no issue.
Sadly I haven't had a chance to try out the external HD and printer features yet. I might need to stick a USB stick in there to test it out in the short term :).

I have the ASUS-WL500 (this ones "little buddy") and it's a great piece of machinery. Scared me once where I had to reboot it because it was acting wonky a couple of weeks after purchase, but now it's been running for months without issue. I'm quite impressed with what ASUS did with these guys.
I used to be a D-Link/Linksys guy, but I've had a list of problems with both their products, so I decided it was time for a drastic change. Thanks to a suggestion from Slacker, I'm really happy.

Yea, I'm wishing I hadn't gotten a linksys wireless card for my gaming PC. Only wireless hardware giving me trouble now.
