I got an email from Blockbuster Video yesterday. Thinking it was the newsletter and some freebie printout coupon like it usually is I was disappointed to see that it was about new rental rates.

Looks like the days of No Late Fees are gone. I had read that BBV in the US had already done away with the no late fees but it remained in effect for CDN stores. I had to call my local store to find out when the new pricing went into effect and did I need to bring my movies in right then. Turns out I was still okay.

We used to go in on tuesday and rent a couple new releases and if we didn't watch them within the time before they were due back, we kept them until the weekend and returned them within the 7day limit. Can't do that anymore.

New Pricing in effect as of April 21:

Looks like rentals (movies) are in fact cheaper, blurays aren't as expensive as they were before. The key now is to rent only when we know we can watch it within the 2nights a new release is out for.

Ahhh Blockbuster, you're quickly being put out to pasture. I never rented from them because of their absurdly high rental fees and overcharge fees. It's far cheaper and easier to go down to my local Red Box type deal and grab a movie for $1 and even if I keep it longer than a night, it's only an additional .99 to $1.99 depending on the machine.

I don't even know how much it is to rent a game from them in the states, but I'll take Gamefly anyday over Blockbuster.

A buck a day for game rentals pretty much lines up exactly with their game pass. I hate that they rolled out a huge marketing campaign declaring "The End of Late Fees!" and how late fees were so awful. Then they go and change their mind. Where is your god now, Blockbuster?

I've seen those red box type rental dealies in a couple grocery stores. Fees are very cheap but its a little out of the way to return the movie when done.

Now with BBV we're just going to be selective in what we rent and not get 4 movies to watch over the course of the week. Games are still a bit too expensive and not worth getting the gamerpass for me. I had a free trial month of the pass and have played most of whats out now for 360. Until BBV shuts down my local store I'll continue to rent. Mainly because I can't stand the Rogers Plus thats near my house.

Maybe it's just the case of living in the city. I have no clue where a Blockbuster is in Denver, but there's a DVD rental thing at the local corner grocery/liqour store, which is about a block from my apartment. Makes it far easier and cheaper AND less out of the way than a Blockbuster for me. I can't even fathom how they're still around.

Good luck with that business plan BBV.

I don't think we've rented movies at all since we got satellite seven or eight years ago; no sense in it. It's not like we watch movies much anymore anyway.

Does anybody else see the massive epic fail of their new pricing structure?

Hint: It's on the 7-day side.

I'm a big Netflix fan ever since I signed up for it.

Hunh. It's like a buck more to rent 6 movies than it is to rent 3 from the favorites bundles. That's odd. It's like places that actually charge more for combo meals than to purchase them ala carte.

I haven't been to a Blockbuster for a couple years now. The one down the street closed down and then the one near work did as well. I liked going to the one down the street because it was a Blockbuster/Gamerush, and not too many people really knew they sold/bought games. It was rather convenient.

It's just Netflix for movies and the local Best Buy (or Gamestop if they have a good preorder deal) for games now.

Not an option in Canada unfortunately.

We have zip, but they are slower, have less inventory and no online streaming.

I still sometimes pop into Blockbuster to grab a flick to watch with a friend or something but not very often. I used to get a lot of games with the "no late fee" going on, but recently have been renting less. The $1 a day late fee caps after one week when they effectively "sell" you the rented item. You can still drop it off in the box within 30 days and pay the fee later. I recently rented Bangkok Dangerous for 6 bucks and had another 7 tacked on for the late fees on same game I returned a month ago.

If the grocery store is out of the way... how often do you buy food?
