Some friends came by for dinner tonight and brought Carcassone with them. Next to Zombies!!! this is my next favorite tile game.
played through twice, both times I was shy 1 point from winning. I still haven't quite figured out how farming works, neither had our friends as it was only thier second time playing i.t
loved the game and will buy it when i can... though since they already have it we my go with Settlers of Catan.

Never played the card and paper version of this, but the Live version was great. No need to work out the crazy complicated scoring system with my noodle head.

Yep, I like it on XBLA, too. :-)

I have the Live and hard copy of this game. I can't get enough of tile based games, and as far as they go this is my favorite one.
I still need to try Zombies!!! though.

Zombies is awesome. I have some hybrid Zombies/Frag rules, that I have used once. :-)

This is what I like as well. I considered buying the actual game, but it just seemed much easier to play on Live and now worry about any of the scoring (especially for farms).

I never liked board games much, but the XBLA version indeed is a great game.
The scoring would kill me in real life though, like everybody said, way too many things to take into account.

I played the board game before the XBLA title. It takes awhile to get use to scoring the farms, but it can be done. Personally, I prefer the Hunters & Gatherers version of Carcassone due to extra tiles in the game that let you affect the game, like one that lets you take sole possession of an entire field irregardless of who else has a piece in that field. Hopefully that one will be on Live Arcade at some point.

If you still have those rules send 'em over. we played zombies + zombies5 (university) combo last night.
as for carcassone - i tried the xbla trial last night and you can't do much with it with only 13 or turns. if people here still play it I'll pick up the xbla game and add you on my list to play.

Frag Zombies (http://www.sjgames.com/pyramid/sample.html?id=2478). This is written by the guy that wrote Frag. Probably one of the best non-famous game designers out there, Phillip J Reed (http://philreed.livejournal.com/).

After being exposed to Carcassone and Catan on XBox live, I decided to check out buying the paper game.
IT was like 55$ Canadian at the local games store. Thanks, but no thanks.

What I dislike about this game and Settlers is that way too much of the game is randomly decided. This is why my game of choice is diplomacy.

My friends don't like playing Catan with me because I school them all the time. They never see it coming either,.

True, if you only play one game. But the more games you play, the less chance factors in.
Also, in the time it takes to play a game of Diplomacy, you can play like, four games of Settlers, which helps control the randomness factor. :D

Playing either game with 5+ players does add in an element of luck, but Carcasonne has a bunch of rule variants that can mitigate that. Also, 1v1 Carcassone isn't very random, in my experience.

I really liked Catan, but the downside is multiplayer is through Live only. I'd really like to start playing both again if people were up for it.

I didn't bother with them either. You can talk about Capcom holding off dvd content all you like, but the amounts they were charging for a few extra tiles for Carcassone was pretty criminal.
Not as bad as the Catan AI expansion though.
Yes, they charged for additional AI characters in a mainly multi-player game.

Carcassonne is my favorite board game hands down, I play it weekly with my sister and others. We have the Cathedral/Inn expansion and the Builder/Pig expansion, which add a fair amount of tiles and make the game more entertaining. We are looking into the Dragon/Princess one but it isn't available around here. Great fun though and even little kids can play. My 6 year old niece has beaten adults, it's quite funny.

I accept that Carcassone is a great game; everyone says it is so, and I can see how elegant the mechanics are. It just doesn't hold my interest at all. But Catan... I could play Catan for hours. I've been considering getting it for Live, but I'm worried I'll never leave my living room again.

I have an extra copy of Carcassone.... due to a company messing things up for a friend of mine, I ended up getting the base game and all the expansions from him for like $50, but I already had my own base game, that's still never been played (as we always use my friends' copies when I go out to their places). If anyone wants the base game, let me know... make an offer!

I have both of these on live, and I regularly play Catan (with all expansions) with a friend of mine. Been meaning to pick up Carcassonne but never seem to find the time.
