1] Do not post something that you wouldn't say in a discussion to someone face to face.

2] Personal attacks, mudslinging and insults will not be tolerated at all within this P&R forum area.

3] Do not intentionally bait and definitely do not feed any trolling behavior.

If you feel that someone acting up, use the report post button.

Consequences: Anybody acting out of hand will get a warning, then a temp ban and then a full ban.

At first glance I read that as "P&R Arena Rules"

which I think is totally the better title!!

I have Mortal Kombat in mind now.

"Fight!"

Not me, however. Not me.

You might want to wrangle the Prop 8 thread in here. It has a habit of recurring since its basically the catch-all "gay marriage thread" and I know New York is putting up a bill, so its bound to rear its head again.

Thanks for the head's up. I moved it. :)

I'd greatly prefer if new threads popped up, I really hate lingering threads like that one.

Can I also ask that if you do report a post, please then step out of the thread and let a moderator handle the situation. It takes two to have an argument, and the moderator's job is that much easier when only reported post needs to be dealt with and not two further pages of insults. ;)

Thanks!

Can I ask a favor of the mods here too...There's a tendency around here to be a little trigger happy on closing threads, and I understand the reasons why. But I really hate when this happens to politics threads that have legitimate conversations going on, and a couple of people get it shut down.

Just give it some thought :)

:) I just found this funny, after looking at how many posts you have in that thread. No offense meant at all.

Agreed, torrefaction. Remove those who are dragging the discussion down, but don't kill the discussion.

I'll admit I bumped the thing quite a few times, but it was more a matter of keeping the discussion contained and not spamming the Lounge with a new thread for every incidence related to it.

Plus its the manifestation of my e-peen.

I'd just like to introduce a new PR version of a old internet meem.

Arguing on the internet is like playing knifey spoony. Even if you win you're still stupid for playing in the first place.

given the nights events i thought it might be a helpful bit of advice to live by :D

Ah, I see you've played knifey spoony before!

I vote that the forum be changed from "Politics & Religion" to "P&R Arena".

Don't you think that'd be setting this up for malevolence?

Don't forget the rules of the P&R Arena. If you see a violation, please use the Report Post button or send me a PM. Thanks. :)

FYI - Either later today or tomorrow I'll be activating Serapth as the moderator of P&R. He has volunteered for this duty and I accepted.

I'm actually kidding, because that's really good news.

I guess I ought to speak towards how I intend to moderate as this can be a very incendiary area. My number one purpose is to encourage intellectual debate as that is what I and I believe most others here want. I personally have a low regard of pushing my position on others, nor do I enjoy censorship. I also hate seeing a thread locked early because of a few or a single bad apples.

Generally, I will probably be a bit more tolerant of new threads than many would like. I will only lock threads as a last resort, unless of course the thread really shouldn't have existed in the first place. In order to make such an environment possible and successful, I am going to take the following approach.

I will take a near to zero tolerance approach to personal attacks. Attack the idea, not the poster. This applies in both directions... do not post comments that are obviously baiting. Generally if I see either situation occurring I will give a verbal warning, as very often, people get caught up in a heated conversation and don't realize the tone their language has taken. If after a warning personal attacks continue, I will mark such posts with the spoiler tags ( as I hate censorship ). This is a direct sign that this thread is going in a very poor direction. Any continued conversation to a 'spoilered' post, will be deleted and continued abuse will be brought up with other admins for perhaps worse measures.

Additionally, although I am rabidly anti censorship, anything directly hateful or calling for violence will be deleted. This is as much a requirement of law as an act of moderation. I think we have a good enough community here that this should never become an issue.

Finally, I am here simply to try and make this aspect of the community as strong and positive as possible. If you have any issues with the above, or suggestions going forward, let me know.

Just realize, now that you have a Canuck moderating your P&R, socialised medicine and the Queen on your money are sure to follow!!
