View Full Version : Final Fantasy XIII Demo Is Huge

Not in length, but in size. As in 5.09 GB (http://playstation.joystiq.com/2009/04/16/report-final-fantasy-xiii-demo-over-5gb-in-size/). For the demo. The one hour freakin' demo. That's just nuts. Either SE has no idea what compression is or this is going to come on multiple Blu Rays.

So a one hour demo is bigger than most games from a year ago. That's seriously messed up.

Edit: Incidentally, what's the top-end of Blu-Ray storage space? 25gb?

This reminds me of one of the comments on GameTrailers (for one of the videos of the demo) that I thought was pretty funny.I think for the Xbox360 versian [sic] it will eitther [sic] be that they will have like ten discs cause the 360 can't run it as smooth on one disc as the PS3 or shorten the story and lower the graphics which means it's probabbly [sic] gonna look like crap. And no I'm not a PS3 fanboy, I don't even own a PS3 I own a 360.Obviously SE's not going to do anything like shorten the story, or have the 360 version look like crap, but it probably will have to span a number of discs. I guess the question is will it be more discs than Lost Odyssey or other large RPGs on the system.

I remember how people criticized Final Fantasy 7 so heavily because it was on multiple discs.

Oh, wait, nobody who wasn't an idiot did that.

When I was young, I gave multi-disc games more street cred.

Changing discs doesn't really bother me that much. Especially with a linear RPG like this. I just hope they package it well. (Discs in paper sleeves do annoy me.)

Hell yeah. Those thicker PS1 cases were the shit, to the point where a lot of one disc games came in them anyway for no apparent reason. :p

I love multi-disc RPGs. They feel more....epic.

50GB for dual layer.

The regular jewel cases on the other hand.....

50GB for dual layer.

I hope that I don't see a multi-disc Blu-Ray release for a few more years then. Guess that's the future-proofing Sony have touted for a while now though.

When did that all change I wonder. At least with 10 discs you could show your girlfriend why it needed to be 60 bucks:D

I think multiple BR's would be quite cool actually. "But look, this game is a gazillion gigs, it must be awesome"

90% of the 5gigs is probably FMV, leaving 500meg for the game assets?

maybe the demo is 900 MB of content. Fill the disc up with 1080p video that has minimal compression. 360 version will probably have the video stored at 720p with slight compression artifacts, cutting the video size down massively. At least that is my guess.

Kind of like the same way MGS4 'fills' a blu-ray. That game has more pre-rendered video than Pixar studios.

Are you sure about that? I was under the impresion that the vast majority of the cutscenes in MGS4 were done in real time, not FMV. I think you can see that if you use one of the alternate costumes since they show in up the cutscenes (as does your camo).

As long as they don't package a multi-disk game (if that's the case) like Lost Odyssey I'm fine with it.

I predict a 3 disc game, 2 discs for the install taking up about 10-12GB and one play disc with very little load time. If you don't install the game then you'll have to swap between discs (possibly multiple times depending on how they have to organize the game data for installation) as well as having to deal with some pretty long load times.

Yeah, MGS4 was full because of audio if I remember correctly.

Star Ocean 4, another Square JRPG, had disc swapping (or so I heard) depending on where you traveled in the world. So if you traveled to a place on disc 1, you had to pop that disc in. It wasn't a serious offense, since it's a linear game, but can still be annoying. I haven't played it so I can't testify, I'm just going by reviews and user comments.

I would prefer 1 disc (who wouldn't) but if I have to switch discs every 10 hours or so I won't mind. However, if I have to keep swapping discs a la Baldur's Gate or other past PC games, I'll be irritated.

If my PS3 was working I'd buy it for that system because of the disc count alone. But I doubt it will be fixed by then, so 360 probably.

Was that the one where all the games were on the same spindle? If yes, than I agree completely. I don't understand why we can't get cases those hinge-flaps that carry extra discs, like some 360 games. I think Last Remnant came like that, and other JRPGs w/multiple discs.

Actually Lost Odyssey had 3 discs on a spindle and the fourth disc in a paper sleeve on the left side on top of the instruction booklet. I think the Chinese or Japanese version of the game had a really nice box that held all 4 discs perfectly.

But personally I don't mind them all being on the same spindle, since I just keep the disc I am currently playing on top. It was the paper sleeved disc that really annoyed me.

Since every PS3 app needs to be on Blu-ray, they have no reason to spend even an hour of dev time on compression. When the game ships, with an install option, they'll do some light compression, and during the porting process, it'll get compressed even more... and in all likelihood, never to the point where humans will be able to tell.

It's going to take more than a year for your PS3 to be fixed?

I refuse to pay $150 for it to be fixed, and it could be more...the $150 is just their base charge, what they charge to look at it. It died during warranty, they wouldn't honor it because I bought it used without receipt. I'd rather spend the $150 on GAMES. Irritates the fuck out of me. At least I have the 360. Fixed for free even after almost 3 years of ownership. Sony, no, after just 8 months after birth.

But I'll probably cave...someday. I'm just bitter.

Probably when Uncharted 2 comes out. ;)

I'm definitely interested in picking this up. I've never played a real proper FF game so this'll be my first. I played a bit of Tactics Advance. Heck, I own XII but just never got around to playing it.

You and me both. Yellow light of death? I think mine might still be covered under the extended warranty from Best Buy, but I'm willing to shell out the $150 to Sony if they can fix it. I doubt Best Buy has backwards compatible systems anymore. Plus, my Persona 4 save! :( Man, do I want to play that game.
