I saw this today on IGN - RE5 DLC already on disc (http://xboxlive.ign.com/articles/970/970396p1.html)
Anyone know if the codes are interchangable? Putting this one up on the 'biggest ripoffs of all time' list.
(please merge or remove if this is already posted somewhere else.)

I don't have RE5, so I don't have a dog in this fight, but you do realize that when Capcom says "the code isn't on the disc", they're not just saying "well, the UNLOCK code wasn't on the disc, that's what you're paying for!", right? They're saying the gameplay code for the new mode did not exist when the game shipped. The actual purchased download is about 2MB, which people (IGN included) are using to justify the claim that they are being made to pay for content they already purchased. Capcom refutes this in a quote one of their forums from on Friday (http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2009/04/10/capcom-says-re5-versus-mode-download-was-legit-not-a-key/):
Svensson wrote: “Keys are 100 [kilobytes] or less. It is not a key. We have said in the past, it uses assets from the disc (like levels, models, audio, etc.) but the code is new and does not exist on the disc.”
Personally, I find it a little hilarious that people assume that a low file size is rock solid proof that there's nothing there worth paying for. We used to pay $50 for games that could fit on 5.25" floppies that held barely more than 1MB. The entirety of Super Mario Bros 3 was less than 500KB. I can point you to procedurally generated demos people have created for scene parties that create huge, sweeping 3D landscapes with music in 60KB.
Point being, there's no story here yet - Capcom may be lying, and may not be, but a 1.8MB download doesn't prove anything other than that there's no new art assets in the download, which everybody already knew. I have absolutely no issue believing that the actual gameplay code for a new multiplayer mode (given that the basic multiplayer code for co-op was already on the disc) could be contained in under 2MB.

Even if it was on the disc I don't understand how it is a ripoff. Let me rephrase that, since it will be taken wrong...though the content may be on the disc, it may not have been intended as part of the final product. It was not advertised as playable when you bought the disc, so there should be no reason to complain. If Capcom put extra resources on the game to make this mode, then shouldn't they be compensated for it? If you think that they shouldn't, then why should they have made this mode, which didn't sell the game in the first place. It not part of the integral RE5 game, so what is the problem. It isn't like they are selling you the last level. It is an extra mode. Extra meaning above and beyond the normal mode. Be happy that you have the option to pick it up, not bitching that you aren't getting something for nothing.

I still want to know how a vs mode in a game where you can't move and shoot at the same time can be any fun. To me, it's like visualizing a turret defense game from a behind the turret view.

I wish DVDs had DLC so you could unlock the special features already on the disc a month afterwards.

Well, I actually bought the mode, so maybe I can clear some of this up.
First, the entire "on the disc" thing is entirely played out in my opinion. I don't think anyone can argue that RE5 doesn't have more content than most other $60 games. I don't think there's a whole lot more to say on that matter.
How it plays is actually pretty interesting. Whereas most games award points based on kills, RE5 gives you points based on the damage you're doing regardless if you ultimately kill the other player or not. Because of this, there's a strong incentive to avoid situations where both players stand 5 feet from each other with their feet firmly planted, unloading on each other until one dies. You're much better off squeezing off a couple quick shots and running away before the other guy gets a bead on you, especially in the free-for-all games, which I think I prefer to the team mode. The kind of duels everyone envisions do occasionally happen and they are a bit silly, but I'd argue that if you let those two players run around each other in counter-clockwise circles while they shotgun each other from 10 ft away, as they do in most games, it's still pretty silly.
The other interesting part of the vs mode is that the maps are populated with tons of NPC zombies, who function as a neutral faction that will attack all players. While killing zombies doesn't directly affect your score, you will want to kill them because they drop the grenades, ammo, and healing items you'll need to win, and the boss zombies drop the power weapons, which you'll definitely want.
Of course, these guys aren't standing around waiting to be farmed. They have a habit of showing up at the worst times. I can't count the number of times I've been grabbed by behind or killed by an executioner's axe while I'm shooting at another player. And these guys run around in big numbers. It's not uncommon to be chased by four or five standard zombies, as well as two executioners, all at the same time.
The overall strategy is a lot closer to a game like DotA than Halo. You need to balance your time between farming NPCs for powerups and finding opportune times to attack your opponents without taking damage. It has a more methodical pace than most other deathmatch games, and there's a decent amount of strategy you need to employ to win beyond "shoot everything that moves"
Anyways, a picture is worth a thousand words. This a video of how a typical round plays out, I think it's pretty cool.

that video and Food's comments make me want to reconsider. I'll re-visit the idea of getting vs mode when i finish getting the bsaa tokens and if people are still playing vs.

Arguement about what's on the disc or not aside, I've been meaning to get this myself. But I've only just updated my account to Gold again and am low on points.
Would it be worth doing a small dedciated thread for anyone wanting to play?

While the video posted after my post makes me laugh my ass off, and shows that I'm not alone in worrying about how the mode would play, the clip of it in action did look like a lot off fun.... but does show that there are a lot of those standoffs where you basically just shoot each other until someone falls over.

After seeing that video, I don't think theres a chance in hell I'll pick this up.
Purely because I hate the part at the begining where you are told the same thing EVERY time.

or you could lure infected towards an enemy player as you run past them and hopes they take him down, then you can just blast him and get the kill.
will check how many points i have tonight and dl the vs code.
