Audiosurf Throwdown: Brad Sucks - Making Me Nervous [Archive]

So late at night when I'm done with my work I turn to Audiosurf (http://audio-surf.com/) to make the last few hours fly by.

Inspired by the fun that Brass Gecko and I had warring over the top score one morning, I've decided to issue a CoG challenge to any other Audiosurfers out there.

The particulars:
1. You have exactly one week from the time the throwdown is posted to reply with a screenshot if your high score.
2. Winner picks the next throwdown song. If no one can beat your throwdown score, you must choose someone to pick the song for the next throwdown.
3. Include these rules in your post along with the artist and track name. Bonus if the song is (legally) free to download, but this is not a requirement.

I'm pretty sure I hit every colored block, too. It looks like I'll have to attempt the multicolored modes to have a chance at beating you.

I purposefully used my trixie eraser elite strategies to set the score.

I can probably break 75k if I spend another hour or so on it.

Also: I love this fucking song.

Update: I am TERRIBLE at the multicolored modes, of any sort. I guess I've spent too long training myself to go for anything that isn't gray. I'm constantly overflowing one bar or another.

Edit: Even Ironmode wasn't enough. I think I concede this one.

One of the things that must be addressed with Audiosurf competition is that even if two people/PCs download the same song from the same place, when they get to playing it their block arrangements and maybe even block numbers will be different. My score in Elite on this song actually isn't my maximum (but very close), and it is entirely possible that it is impossible for others to beat my score with the same character and vice versa.

That's why when things get really close when as many variables as possible are removed, I like to consider it a draw.

edit: yeah I saw that La Camisa Negra update, I'll have to try and beat it if I can :p

edit edit: Did you try maxing everything out in non-Ironmode? Regular mode isn't necessarily worth less, Ironmode is just more difficult and has a different block arrangement (plus really fun physical twists in the track)

Yeah, it's not much of a professional competative format. You know, it's just for shits and giggles. And at a song a week, I think we'll be all right with the little inconsistencies.

Incidentally axion's and my Pro scores on "La Camisa Negra" are a big of a demonstration of this. Granted, axion's copy of the song did not come from me, but I'm pretty sure we both did as good as we could on Pro.

Yeah, I think I maxed out both ways, it's not that hard a song in mono. I managed not quite 49,000 on regular, and then the 53,000ish score in ironmode.

I did notice Axion's version has a sliightly different looking track shape. I know that mine's been different than the majority before, and I suspect that the format of the track or the program used to rip it affects it slightly as well.

EDIT: Nevermind, this seems to be one of the inconsistencies that Lint was talking about. I don't think the two blocks I missed would make up for the 5k that I'm shy.

Jeesh and it was just my first attempt at the song. My next attempt ended up getting less points.

I use the Ninja on casual...about at talented as I can get on this game.

And I highly recommend trying Eraser Elite for a different kind of experience. If you're a puzzle gamer you should be able to figure out a few strategies to polish up your score in no time.

Here's a few EE tips:
-Collect all of the high point value blocks you can and match them ASAP.
-Always grab white blocks. They're amazing points for very little effort. One point of note: The song will always have the same amount of white blocks, but they randomly take the place of other blocks so be prepared to make quick changes to grab them or have a color run split up by them.
-Feel free to erase any color but Yellow and Red.
-Play through the track a few times and develop a strategy for finishing. One of the heftiest bonuses you can rack up is the "Clean Perfect" where you catch the last block and still wind up with a clean board. Simply spend the last 15 seconds clearing your board and setting up to catch the last block and have it land on at least two others. Make sure you memorize the color and position so you're set up to catch it and clear the board.
-Use Iron Mode. It seems to have a bit higher traffic density which means more points. The track is a bit twistier and bumpier and you'll fail if you overfill. But if you were going for the top score, an overfill would fuck that right up anyway.

Ironmode is a slightly altered ruleset that tends towards increased difficulty. The block layout changes in Ironmode as well, so, while there is the potential for a higher max score, it is not guaranteed.

For example, Ironmode Mono Casual removes the gutter lanes and if you break a stack (too full of grays), you lose the song completely. In Ninja Mono you lose the cowcatcher ability as well as the shuriken but now the grays fade with time (again, overflowing a stack is game over). Mono Pro can still jump and use the cowcatcher, but that too-many-grays-and-you-lose condition is added (Does anyone honestly use that jump?).

You want a challenge? Play Freeride with Ironmode. It deliberately runs counter to near-everything you ever learned to do in Audiosurf.

That's definitely the hard part. I can't even begin how badly I want to submit a song from Brian Eno's Apollo album but noooooo, that wouldn't be legal.

Yes, they usually suck...but...they are free, are available for a week...A proper time frame for this contest :)

Not everyone has iTunes, myself included. I'm not installing that.

I wanted to play a bit to hold me over until Left 4 Dead unlocks at midnight, and I've got a lovely graphical glitch that doesn't go away when I restart the game. Anybody else seen this or have any ideas, or should I just go ahead and reinstall it?

When you alt+tab out, it does that graphical glitch. I know exactly what you are talking about. Only practical solution is just to restart the game.

I hadn't alt+tabbed, and glitch kept happening when I restarted both the game and steam.. but oddly enough, alt+tabbing fixed it for me just now. :confused: Thank you!

I got this last night, too. I fixed it by changing the graphics from Premium to Extreme (or whatever the highest setting is to the next highest). Didn't think to try and change it back, but it fixed it for me, at least.

Good to know for an alternate solution, because it seems to happen more often than not now. I can't remember there being a patch recently, but I never saw this before yesterday.
