MTV Unplugged has been showing acoustic performances by popular artists for 20 years (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_artists_featured_on_MTV_Unplugged). I love raw and naked music like this, and the three albums I have from this series have gotten a lot of play over the years.
The KISS album is my favorite. Without any distortion or noise they really get to show of the artistry of their music while still totally rocking. Just listen to Comin' Home or Rock Bottom.
Eric Clapton Unplugged was a hit, and I think it's a great blues record. I like the more somber, soulful version of Layla, and Old Love is fantastic and makes me wish I could play the guitar.
I also have Nirvana's album Unplugged in New York. They play a lot of covers, and it's great to hear Kurt Cobain sing The Man Who Sold the World and Lake of Fire.
Anyone else listen to this series? There are a lot of good artists here who I bet sound amazing outside of the studio and the arena.

Do they still do these shows? I haven't followed MTV in years.

I loved Jay-Z's Unplugged.
And Lauryn Hill's was epic (it was amazing to see a meltdown like that).

Nirvana Unplugged = second best Nirvana album (behind In Utero).
Sandman, they do a few now, but they aren't memorable (did they do Mariah Carey recently?).
I love the STP stuff, or what I've seen of it. Swing Sex Type Thing FTW!

Nirvana's session is probably the best one, though my favorite was the Alice In Chains set.

Eric Clapton's Unplugged session still is one of my favorite albums. His more blues based rendition of "Layla" is amazing. I also agree with Pher that Alice In Chains' Unplugged is a great one.
iTunes did/does something like this with their "iTunes Original" series. It's very hit or miss, but there are a few good ones on there.

Actually, my favorite Unplugged? La Ley. It's one of those rare albums that, to me, has such a great sound quality that the band seems to be playing right in my own home.

I've only heard Nirvana's unplugged and it isn't that good, except for the fact that its their only listenable (official)Live album. Though their version of Man Who Sold the World is great.
Nirvana's session is probably the best one, though my favorite was the Alice In Chains set.
Both of these were FAN-TASTIC. I think the Alice In Chains CD is better, on the whole; but Where Did You Sleep Last Night? is hands down my favorite Nirvana song... and it's a cover (so go figure). I think it's absolutely haunting. Love, love, LOVE that song.
