View Full Version : It's so obvious now!

It's quite obvious now that I've thought of it.
Why don't major record labels create a website where anyone can stream any song they want for the price of looking at a few ads? Think about it, free for consumers and unlike mp3's accessible anywhere you have the internet. So maybe a fraction of a penny of profit everytime someone listens to the song, but I listen to songs I like plenty of times and I'd bet others do to. They'd probably make MORE money over time than if I bought the song for a dollar through some intermediary.
I doubt it will happen within the very near future, the record companies seem to stupid to realize how to make money today. I think it was Warner music that cut Rock Band off? They're too stupid to even realize what money is apparently. Still I can't see a reason why my idea wouldn't work. Free music for us, money for the bands, awesomesauce all around. The only ones that would lose out are bad bands who only get their crappy songs listened to once and make nothing instead of people ending up with bad music they don't like and the band ending up with money.

Free legal streaming music program with major labels...
https://www.spotify.com
It's effectively a program for streaming songs and what's more it legal and a hell of a lot of the major record labels are signed. Which means there is already a huge number of tracks with more turning up all the time. All this is supported by ads in the free copy which you can avoid if you make a choice to subscribe.
i think you might be able to understand the amusement :) not laughing at you just the fact you post your idea for doing something that i just posted the program to do it with... so to speak :)
more details and impressions of the service at my link. It's like having itunes with a HUGE library... it's found most of what i've wanted to listen to for the last hour including some rather obscure poppunk... all for having iggy pop telling me about car insurance every so often

Spotify free is currently in an invitation-only beta
:(
See I told you it was obvious :D I doubt much will come of it though, at least initially. Hulu is great, but they still do stupid things like pull movies off and not allow you to watch the entirety of series. Still, this looks like exactly what I was talking about! Now if they could just follow the same example with TV and movie we'd have something.

eh? what? i just opened the site and downloaded the thing, might be that it's still invite only in the US or such... which would seem a little backward but it's a much bigger market so who knows.
The thing is that this is a service that i would be happy to pay for, maybe a bit of a lower price point that £10 a month given how often i think i might use it... but having an empty hard drive it's damn tempting just to open this up rather than go find a cd or redownload stuff. Still point is i think as an experiment it's a very bright light to the industry, if they can pull it off as being purely ad supported then grate but if not then have a mid range thing... pay less a month and still deal with ads as the basic pack or some such.

An ancient device that forces me to listen to tons of annoying ads in exchange for being able to hear other peoples taste in music. Not sure what is has to do with this thread

What if I had posted a picture of a jukebox? 8-P
I still love yahoo radio, personally. If I could get a device that let me listen to my Yahoo Radio station anywhere, I would probably have to get it.

Speaking of streaming music, I wish I could still get pandora in Canada. I'm sure I could go through proxy stuff or something but I am not sure if it is worth the effort since I don't actually want streaming music to often but it was nice when I wanted it, last.fm just doesn't seem as good to me.

I thought the record labels were agaisnt online music as it is the devil?
What about Last.fm?
I find Last.Fm is good if you want to discover new stuff, or listen to random things but not a great way of setting up a cohesive playlist.

I agree that the playlists are lacking, but if you just decide on a whim, "I would like to listen to X song right now," then Last.fm, in many cases, enables you to do so.
Although mostly I just use it for scrobbling.

It's a dutch site, but there's tons of new content and stuff on there every week/day. Musiclovers should really check it out. Especially if you like less well known music.

Just click like mad to get to other stuff:D

I rather like FineTune. You can only use three songs per musician, but you can have a playlist of like 90 songs, IIRC (I haven't used it since my computer kicked it this last time).

MySpace has this feature. Most bands on record labels (not every indy label yet) have their entire discography available free for streaming. Every few song a ad pops up that you can easily dismiss. You can make your own public and private playlists. It's nice.
