(Entertainment Weekly) -- In the first truly shocking box office result of the year, "Fast & Furious" sped away from expectations to gross a humongous $72.5 million, according to early estimates from Media by Numbers.

From CNN
- Best April opening ever, beating "Anger Management's" $42.2 million.

- Best Universal Pictures opening ever (three-day), beating "The Lost World: Jurassic Park's" $72.1 million.

- Best F&F franchise opening ever, beating "2 Fast 2 Furious'" $50.5 million.

Sorry, already thread to this, early for me and hung over, probably want to merge or close this, my bad.

- Best opening yet in 2009, easily beating the bows of the more-buzzed-about "Monsters vs. Aliens" ($59.3 million) and "Watchmen" ($55.2 million).

And there you have it, People like Vin again, like cars again, like popcorn flicks and mindless fun.

Ill be seeing this soon more than likely, could use a good popcorn flick.

I can't wait to go see this. I recently watched the first one and forgot how much I liked it, and I haven't seen a mindless action flick in quite a while.

Action, Hot Women, slick cars, Testosterone, what more could you ask for when going to the Cinema.

was going to see it this weekend but my wife was sick. i enjoyed the first 3 and this one looks as entertaining.

any reason why they just went with Fast and Furious as the title rather than something with sub?

Fast and Furious, Twilight, etc. We call all sit around bitching and moaning about how these movies are doing so well, or we can just allow people to enjoy what they like and we can continue to enjoy what we like. So what if we think they suck? I'm sure a lot of people who like these movies would never watch or enjoy what we consider amazing films.

My girlfriend wasn't at all interested in Twilight, but after being talked into watching the movie she liked it so much she is reading the book. My girlfriend never reads novels. Now I have to watch it, and I may or may not like it. I'm just happy that she found something she really enjoys, especially since it got her to read the book.

She still agrees that sparkly vampires are pretty fucking retarded though.

Same thing happened with my mother. I knew she liked cheesy movies (I mean, she owns stuff like Frankenfish and Bats, for Christ's sake), but I was shocked when I stopped by and found out she now owns the movie and had ordered the first book. On the other hand, she doesn't read nearly as much as she used to and if this gets her back into that, I may just buy her the rest of the series - I mean, Mother's Day is right around the corner. ;)

As to the larger point, though, I agree - if someone is looking for some cheap entertainment, there's little harm in it.

EDIT: I should also add, I probably won't see this in theaters. Last time I tried that, I found myself too annoyed by the type of people watching it with me to actually enjoy the movie. However, thanks the the praise in the other F&F thread, I did rent the third one.

And people all mocked me for loving the F&F series. Who's laughing now? (Well, technically, Universal Pictures.) Still, can't wait to watch this sometime in the week.

[Hector looks over Brian's Eclipse]
Hector: Nice wheels. Whatcha running under there?
[Brian looks at him, but doesn't answer]
Hector: You're gonna make me find out the hard way? You're brave! You're brave. They call me Hector. Got a last name too, but I can't pronounce it.
Brian: Brian Spilner.
Hector: Typical white boy name.

What often gets overlooked in these scenarios is competition.

F&F didn't have any so it did well. Theres not a lot of action movies out right now and the series has always had an appeal to a certain type of car buff.

Not even John Cena fans want to watch a John Cena movie.

Not me anyway, I'm just envious of the fact it's not released in the UK till friday. Bit harsh to be honest.

Bull. No action/racing movies, no, but there was absolutely competition for the demographic. Adventureland was shooting for the exact same audience and released last week, too. Then there's 12 Rounds, I Love You Man, Haunting in Connecticut, Knowing and even (arguably) Monsters vs Aliens, all of which are at least a couple weeks old but still going for the same demo. No competition doesn't account for all various records broken, either, especially when people are supposed to be spending less money, or beating even the highest most generous predictions by more than $20 mil.

Fun Fact: This already took in $10 mil more than the entire box office gross of Tokyo Drift.

Anyway, told you it was going to do phenomenal. :p

I think theres a place for mindless action movies like Fast and Furious and 300.... as long as they are done well.

Same applies to Twilight - its not that the mere fact that it is a mindless teen vampire/romance story is bad, its that it isnt a good one. Are good writing and mindlessness mutually exclusive?

I'll probably see this movie, maybe this weekend.

Epic fail. He mentions his middle name as well in that quote, which is what makes it sound like a serial killers.

Hey whatever happened to it not mattering by how much you win by? Gloating about how you destroyed Watchmen and Anger Management! Winning is winning I thought that's what you said. Ask any racer, any real racer.

Good movie.
Will watch again.
For a fourth movie in a series aside from Harry Potter and such, you can't expect much. But this was very entertaining.

Part of that is probably down to Vin marketing the hell out of it. He's been going on a mad press tour to show off the movie.

Imagine the response if an audience was expecting to see Fast & Furious, but Irreversible started playing instead. God, that would be hilarious.
