So apparently, I was not around, the Internet just stopped working for my brother in the middle of playing something (I am assume COD5 as that is what he usually plays).

There can not be anything wrong with my modem or router (I assume) since I am typing this on my laptop connecting through the wireless and the other computer connected directly to the router can connect to the Internet with no problems. Tried switching up the cables to no affect.

So I thought I might try uninstalling my ethernet driver which failed, it also will not let me install the ethernet driver just sits there, I left it for about half an hour and it wouldn't move and previous and subsequent tries just did the same thing. The ethernet card is part of the motherboard, so I figure some part of the board/ethernet card decided to die.

However, I figured I would get opinions on if I should see if something else is wrong or if anyone else can think of trying something else to fix it. Or is there noting else I can do? I just reformatted it 4 or 5 days ago and everything was working fine until now and it worked for a couple hours today. I don't know if any other information is required.

May sound stupid but try unplugging the router and modem to restart them?

I figured since the others were working that it probably wans't them but I guess trying that won't hurt.

Edit: No dice, tried resetting the modem and hooking the computer straight up to it bypassing the router and still wasn't working.

Do you have a spare NIC?

You could either try RMAing the mobo directly or slapping a cheap $10 ethernet card in there and seeing what happens. We had a string of these at work that all used the same mobo; we found it easier and cheaper just to use a 2nd one. It could, of course, be something very wrong with the motherboard that lies outside the NIC itself...

It's a four year old system, I guess with talking about the new computer in the other thread that could be assumed that is what I was talking about.

Sounds like I might be trying the cheap ethernet card, and I am not sure what NIC unless it refers to the Network Interface Card (according to wiki)? Which is possible as well since it is not exactly a new system which has seen a lot of use.

What Antivirus?

AVG free

Yes, sorry. NIC = network interface card. If it's an old PC and the motherboard's way out of warranty, definitely slap a cheap card in there and ride out that PC till she dies.
